schaffer's contract was 7 years, $36 million. that's chump-change in this market for a starting tackle on either side. hadnot is a replacement for mckinney. it has nothing to do with schaffer or bentley.

The Browns announced today that they have signed offensive lineman Lennie Friedman to a one-year contract.

Friedman, 31, is in his third season with the Browns and 10th in the NFL. He appeared in all 16 games last season on special teams. He was a second-round draft choice by Denver in 1999.

On Monday the Browns announced the signing of free agent offensive lineman Rex Hadnot, a starter at guard for Miami last season.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Cleveland general manager Phil Savage, whose moves have brought the Browns back to respectability, is close to signing a long-term contract extension with the club.

Although nothing is imminent, owner Randy Lerner said Tuesday that he and Savage have had on-and-off discussions on an extension since December and should have one finalized "soon."

Savage has two years left on a deal he signed in 2005, when he took over a talent-deprived team that went 4-12. The Browns won 10 games last season and barely missed the playoffs. In January, the Browns gave coach Romeo Crennel a two-year extension through the 2011 season.

That is true. Shaffer can play both tackle positions which is a luxury but he did raise a little bit of a ruckus when they moved him to RT.

I am not sure if McKinney is going to be able to come back this year. I believe he is having back problems and is a wait and see type of situation. I think Friedman can play both guard positions and center.

I think we still need to re-sign Dorsey as a backup tackle.

Boy am I glad that Savage beat out Collins in that power struggle of a couple years ago. Some may think that Savage doesn't deserve an extension until the Browns make the playoffs, but I think you can look at the teams direction and see the improvements he has made. Hell, just look at the names on the roster now and right before he got here. That's about all you need to see to realize the impact he's having. I'm glad that he has some job security now. Too many times in pro sports you get GMs and coaches who make moves to keep their job in the short term while forsaking the future. I'm glad that it looks like that won't be the case with the Browns anytime soon.

Savvy Savage has Browns ready to challenge Steelers and AFC

They swarmed the kid working out, the NFL scouts hounding his every move. They expected a lot, his reputation was big after all, but most didn't seem to get what they wanted from the workout, leaving disappointed.

But one scout didn't let that workout change his assessment. He knew the kid could play, and that's what mattered. It was all on the tape. So as the scout left that workout five years ago, he did so with a sly smile on his face, hoping like heck the poor showing would help drop the player down to his team.

I will admit that I have knocked Savage a couple times but looking at the roster now I guess I have to take everything back except that I still want a pass rush OLB and another ILB. However I realize I cannot have everything at once but just wish for it. I am still a little bit wishy-washy about Anderson but will give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to that. Deep in my mind, I still think Savage has something up his sleeve for the draft. Just my humble opinion.

The Cleveland Browns do not have a selection until the 23rd pick of the fourth-round in the upcoming NFL draft, but that hasn't stopped the team from compiling a wish list of prospects to bring in for visits. Looking to shore up a questionable secondary, the team is prepared to take action.
The Browns are expected to have Arizona State safety Josh Barrett in for a visit later this month. Barrett is an intriguing prospect with a rare combination of size, speed and overall athleticism. Many NFL scouts are comparing him to Washington Redskins rookie safety LaRon Landry, who the team selected with the sixth overall pick in the '07 draft. Not certain if Barrett will be around when it is time for the Browns to make their selection because he is en fuego.

Lennie Friedman hasn't had enough of blocking for the NFL's leading kickoff returner, Joshua Cribbs.
The Browns signed Friedman, a nine-year veteran offensive lineman, to a one-year contract Tuesday. He can play guard and center and appeared in 16 games in 2007 as a key member of the kickoff return wedge that helped Cribbs average 30.7 yards per return.
A second-round pick out of Duke in 1999, Friedman, 31, enters his third year in Cleveland. He also has played for the Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage, whose aggressive moves helped the Browns finish 10-6 last season, is close to receiving a multiyear contract extension, team owner Randy Lerner said Tuesday.
"It's something we've been talking about on and off since December," said Lerner. "We've kept the dialogue going, and we hope to have something done soon."
Savage has two years remaining on the five-year deal he signed in 2005.
Lerner declined to specify the length of the extension, but it will be at least for two years, through 2011.
Savage's extension comes on the heels of two-year extensions given to coach Romeo Crennel and offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, both of whom are now signed through 2011. Assistant Mel Tucker was also promoted to defensive coordinator and given a two-year extension through 2010.
"What we're starting to have on the Browns is legitimate continuity, and it shows up in being able to act quickly in free agency and trades," said Lerner. "The Browns' success depends on our ability to build a core group of players and not having constant turnover. That's what's happening here."

BEREA Randy Lerner never asked for this.

He has tried to honor his late father in the way he manages his unusual inheritance, an NFL franchise.

He has tried to have fun owning the Cleveland Browns. Often, it has been hard. That Sunday in Baltimore, when a last-second field goal try took an evil bounce, it was impossible.

"That game came the closest to sending me into a kind of assisted-living status," Lerner said from his winter owner's box, a second-floor office filled with paintings, pictures and helmets.

The Browns seemed to have lost their second straight road game to a division rival on a long, last-snap field goal when Phil Dawson's 51-yard ricochet was ruled no good.

"I thought that I was starting to descend into full insanity," Lerner said. "I looked at the scoreboard, with triple-zeroes, and the final score posted with us losing."

The franchise's expansion-era luck changed that day.

Their job is to protect someone-- even if it means sacrificing themselves.
In the 3-4 defensive alignment, the bodyguards are the "3" -- the down linemen, the two ends and the nose tackle. And they are charged with protecting the "4" -- the linebackers, two inside and two outside -- thus allowing them to rush the passer and/or go sideline to sideline making plays in the running game. They do this by occupying the offensive linemen.
