Insiders give nod to Rogers 'Big Baby' may just need coach like Romeo Crennel
Published on Thursday, Mar 13, 2008
This past week was spent making some calls to see what NFL folks thought of Shaun Rogers.
The skinny on him coming out of Detroit was not positive.
So I called a few people who work in the league, guys who know their stuff, guys most anyone would respect. And the consensus about the Browns' new defensive lineman was summed up by this comment:
''He's going to help them,'' one insider said.
Really?
''A lot,'' he said.
Wow, I thought. Those are strong words about a guy people in Detroit couldn't wait to run out of town. A guy whose nickname is ''Big Baby.''
Rogers weighed 10 pounds and 1 ounce at birth, so perhaps the nickname is literal. Unfortunately, with the Detroit Lions it stood for something else ? a guy who was described as not consistent, not a hard worker and not dependable.

Cleveland Browns turn attention to re-signing linebacker Chaun Thompson
Thursday, March 13, 2008Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Nearly tapped out in free-agency spending without having added any linebackers, the Browns are focusing on re-signing Chaun Thompson.
They have been negotiating to bring back the defensive role player and special teams contributor, and hope to have a two-year deal done today. Thompson, a second-round draft choice of the Browns in 2003, has not visited any other teams.
The Browns did visit Wednesday with former Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson, who has not played since 2006 because of neck injuries. Wilson was cleared to return in January by a back specialist.
The Browns gave Wilson a physical exam Wednesday, but a team source indicated there was nothing further to report.
Wilson, 30, made the Pro Bowl five times in eight years with the Broncos before suffering a neck injury while colliding with teammate Gerard Warren, a former Brown, in the final month of the 2006 season. The Broncos released him in April 2007. He had a base salary of $5.2 million at the time.
If the Browns pass on Wilson, their options at linebacker are dwindling.

Crennel is a 'special guy'
Lerner says coach puts team in best position to win
Thursday, March 13, 2008
BY STEVE DOERSCHUCK
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER
BEREA As a rule, Randy Lerner regards answering on-the-record questions about himself as warmly as he would a hostile tax audit.
In part, that's a business decision.
Making him the story does nothing for the team he owns, the Cleveland Browns, as he sees it.
Yet he understands people are curious about, if not focused, on him.
In the context of a broad conversation about the team, he will drop his guard and reveal snippets about himself.
For example, in an interview segment about one of his top confidants, Jim Brown, Lerner mentioned how well read the Hall of Fame running back is.
What about Lerner? As a window to his mind, he is asked if he has a favorite book.
"Probably 'Elmer Gantry' would be my favorite," he says of a 1923 Sinclair Lewis novel.
Why?
"It was a great insight into the difference between what it is you think you're seeing and what it is you may actually be dealing with it," Lerner explained. "It deals with it with ... kind of humor ... and yet a pretty tough irony."
There was a bit more on the personal side, but for the most part, Lerner ? and The Repository in a detailed one-on-one interview ? stuck to chatter about his football team.
