Browns' Savage close to extension

CLEVELAND Browns General Manager Phil Savage won't have many picks on draft day. He will, however, have a contract extension.

Savage and Cleveland owner Randy Lerner recently met and made progress toward an extension, which is expected to be completed before the April 26-27 draft.

As for the draft, the Browns don't have a pick until Sunday's fourth round. During a radio interview Thursday, Savage said it was unlikely that he would trade a player to move up in the draft.

Cleveland Browns receiver Jurevicius recovering from staph infection

Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius suffered a staph infection several weeks after undergoing knee surgery in January, but is recovering well, sources close to the situation said Thursday.
Jurevicius, an 11th-year pro and Cleveland-area native, is expected to participate in organized team activities in May and the minicamp in June, sources said.
Jurevicius underwent what the Browns described after the season as a clean-up on the knee at the Cleveland Clinic. He began experiencing symptoms in the knee about two weeks later when he was on a trip out west, sources said.

Thanks to the Mods and everyone for getting this thread back on topic. I know it's just our BP Mock draft but it seems to me that there are plenty of talented players that could help the Browns defense by the time they get to pick in the 4th round. At the very least they could pick up a decent DB to help take some of the sting out of trading Bodden.
In the 4th round they could pick up Paul Hubbard to possibly replace J vicious when he retires next year. Right now Scandrick CB out of Boise State might still be there in the 5th round. There a ton of decent CB's in the middle rounds of the draft. There are still some good LB's that might help fill our needs that are going to be available in the middle rounds of the draft. They can grab Jonal Saint-Dic in the late rounds or bring him in as an undrafted free agent to help as a pass rusher.

Inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson led the team in tackles despite losing two full games and parts of two others to ankle trouble. He will benefit from a three-man line that finally has the players to keep blockers from tying him up. Still only 24, Jackson has a nose for the ball and should come into his own.

This statistic of Jackson leading the team in tackles does not cut any stadium mustard with me because I don't think any of those were TFLs. We really need to upgrade our inside linebacking position and hopefully there will be some camp cuts by teams that will free up some decent ILBs.

I have not been following the mock that closely and have really not heard of this guy. If they knew where you went to school, I could look him up or if you want to amplify that would be fine. I do like the CB from Boston College that was taken in the BP mock draft and he might be available in the 5th round.

I found Hubbard out of Wisconsin. Nice size and good hands but I would rather use our pick on a defensive player but I agree that Hubbard would make a nice slot receiver.

For the most part I agree with you about Jackson. The only thing I think we need to keep in mind though is let's face it whether they run the 3-4 or the 4-3 it all starts up front. Cleveland's fronts have been god awful terrible. Because of this our safety's have had to cover for too long, our LB's have been exposed to the opponent's OL because our Line won't keep the LB's clean. Because of this every team was able to focus their attention on Wimbley and he wasn't able to have a great year. With the upgrades we have made to the Defensive Line I look for this to be a telling year for our defense. If Jackson and Wimbley play better than I think they are going to be fine players. If the DL holds up and the LB's still don't make an impact than yeah Jackson may need to go. Same with our safety's......to me this is it. I'm tired of our safety's being caught out of position, missing tackles and getting beat deep. By upgrading the DL we should see a vast improvement in our safety's.....if not I say can both of them.


One of the reasons I mentioned Paul Hubbard out of Wisky is that he is a tall WR(6'4 or 6'5) with good hands. Let's face it many of the big wideouts will be gone early. He is coming off a knee injury but at his pro day he put up times in the 4.4 fourty. Because of the injury he will slide down to a position where he might be available. I still think we are dangerously thin at WR. Let's face it we have Braylon and Winslow. If one of those guys goes down then the defense can key in on the other guy left. That's too easy in my opinion. Also wouldn't mind seeing us take Monk the WR out of Arkansas in the later rounds. He is a big WR who might be able to replace J vicious.
I do agree though that with the 4th round pick I'd rather see us go DB or speed rushing LB. However if they think they can get Hubbard with their 4th round pick and still get a guy like Scandrick out of Boise State as a DB in the 5th....I'd be thrilled.

Browns linebacker Andra Davis vowed Saturday to rebound from what he described as the worst year of his career.
"I know personally it was my worst," said Davis, who participated in teammate Shaun Smith's charity bowling event downtown. "But it's over, I learned from it and it could've been a blessing in disguise. This year, I have a chance to go back and erase last season, so I'm happy and I'm up for the challenge."
Davis' off year was not lost on the Browns, who eliminated the final two years of his contract and cut his base salary by 44 percent, from $3 million to $1.675 million. But he can make up some or all of it in playing-time incentives.
"It worked out for me and for the Browns," Davis, 29, said. "If I have the year I plan on having, especially with the guys we've got up front now, it'll give me a chance to be free and go back to the table. And it gave the Browns more room to bring in better players."
In 2005, Da vis signed a five-year con tract extension worth $20 mil lion, including base salaries of $3 million in 2008, $3.75 million in '09 and $4.1 million in 2010.
"When I did my deal, I was playing every play," said Davis, who rotates with D'Qwell Jackson and Leon Williams. "Now, I'm playing only 65 to 70 percent, but I can make back the money."

BEREA The jury is out on Trader Phil.

This could be the year the verdict comes in.

Phil Savage has been the most swap-happy general manager in the NFL. In less than 3 1/2 years, he has pulled off 16 trades with the Browns involving draft picks.

The outcome of some of the deals could make or break 2008. The key men:

? Brady Quinn. Trading up for him was intended to match the talent level of AFC North quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer. But how soon can Quinn move past Derek Anderson? Everybody's watching.

? D'Qwell Jackson. The price to move up nine spots in the second round, trading places with the Saints, was former Round 1 pick Jeff Faine. Jackson has been solid but not special at linebacker.

? Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. This year's second- and third-round picks were shipped out with thoughts of turning a substandard defensive line into a gold standard.

Those four players must come through to offset some of the wheeling and dealing that didn't work.

I understand what you are saying about the fact that our DL must keep the other teams offensive line off of our LBs for any of them to be successful. The problem that I have with Jackson is that he is not very physical. I want to say when he came out of Maryland he only weighed about 215 pounds and while he has put on some bulk since turning pro I still don't think he is physically enough to play on the inside. That is just my opinion.

I agree with you regarding the draft but it really all depends on who is going to be available when we pick in the fourth round. There are usually a lot of CBs left in the later rounds and they are usually almost equal in talent so unless there is a standout CB available in the fourth round I can see going for a guy like Hubbard.

I've seen a couple people on here mention Grant as a possibility for the Browns. To me he just does not seem to be a fit as a 3-4 OLB. The ideal 3-4 OLB is much bigger than 6'1" 234 which is why they are often converted college DE's.

I agree.....6'1 234lbs is a good size for a 4-3 defense.

It'd be nice to get some tOSU blood on the team, but I don't think Larry Grant fits what they're trying to do.
