'10 OH DT Jibreel Black (Michigan Verbal)

Cincinnati.com | Cincinnati High School Sports | Cincinnati.Com

Wyoming defensive lineman Jibreel Black is one of the few players from the area's 2010 class who is close to deciding his college choice. Some players have orally committed but the majority are still undecided at this point. Black, who is 6 feet 2 and 260 pounds, has narrowed his college list to five schools. He has agreed to give the Enquirer a glimpse this summer at the recruiting process and how he prepares for the upcoming season. Here is today?s update (as told to Mike Dyer).

I am planning to attend Indiana University's camp June 23. I've been training real hard. A few weeks ago, I injured my right hamstring and I am still trying to get my speed back. I was running a few additional sprints and I felt a tweak on my thigh on the last sprint. It's all good - it's getting way better. I've been trying to get on the field and staying about two hours after lifting in order to get that edge again.

A typical day during the summer finds me getting up around 8 a.m. I am lifting by around 9 a.m. Right now, I am watching my team do 7-on-7 drills. We will likely go to Columbus this Saturday for a 7-on-7 tournament. A lot of high schools will be there and we have a good chance to qualify to play at Ohio Stadium. There is a linemen challenge that I'm getting ready for also. There will be a bench press competition and a tug-of-war and some other stuff. It will be a real fun day. We have to be at school at 6 a.m.

During a typical summer day, I usually take a turkey sandwich with a Gatorade for breakfast. I also take some one-a-day vitamins. I'm a good morning person. I will usually do that routine until the season starts. Usually, I will stay at school until 3:30. I do a lot of sprints and regular conditioning. I won't do distance running until later. I don't care for distance, but I know it's good for you.

As far as my recruiting, there is nothing really new. I've already got my top five. In no particular order, it is Michigan State, Michigan, UC, Indiana and Kentucky. It's getting hard, but I should have a decision real soon.

Right now, it's the dead period so I'm not getting the phone calls. I might go be going to the UC camp tomorrow after the Enquirer photo shoot. I won't participate in the camp, but I might say what's up to the coaches. There's also a three-day Wyoming camp that I might also help with.

MSU, U-M have a shot at 'maniac' DL from Cincinnati | detnews.com | The Detroit News
"Black is a player who could line up as a defensive end or at the tackle position," said Scout.com Midwest analyst Dave Berk. "He's got great burst and will give all out effort on each play. He does a good job going lateral and shows great strength and toughness. With good size and speed, Black is still learning techniques and moves that will take his game to another level."
That boyhood affinity for the Maize and Blue may be the biggest reason the Wolverines are still in the hunt. Were it not for that distinction there's a good chance they'd be on the outside looking in at a race featuring a quartet of schools that Black has already visited. Michigan is the only member of his top five that he hasn't seen yet. The Wolverines' position may be growing more precarious by the day since he could be on the verge of paring down his list for the final time. Currently he has only one more summer visit scheduled, and it's not to Ann Arbor.
Said Black, "Hopefully, I'll make it up to Michigan State if I'm not committed on July 11th."
If that decision timetable holds, the Spartans still have a puncher's chance at securing Black's services. However, the notion that he wouldn't make the trip to East Lansing on the 11th if he makes a commitment suggests that another of his suitors might currently be the team to beat. For his part, Black isn't overtly tipping his hand regarding his leanings. He speaks only of the criteria that will lead him to his final choice.
"It's going to come down to where I fit best," he explained. "It's where I think I fit best at and where I'll develop more so I can hopefully make it to the next level."
In what might be the sprint to the finish line, Cincinnati, Kentucky and Indiana have a few innate advantages over their Great Lakes state adversaries. Cincinnati and Kentucky both boast closer proximity. Indiana, meanwhile, is fairly close as well, but also has the additional benefit of sophomore defensive tackle Larry Black -- Jibreel's brother -- on its football team. A recent trip to Bloomington may be the last he takes before he arrives at a decision.
"I still want to make sure that the school I want to go to is the right school for me and my family, first and foremost," he said. "I want to make sure that the school has a winning attitude. I don't want to go to a losing team. So that's what is holding it up -- it is just a tough decision."
Four of his five suitors are currently hoping it's a little too tough.

Wyoming senior DE Jibreel Black has orally committed to play at Indiana. He told the Enquirer a few minutes ago via phone.

Black, who is 6-3 and 265 pounds, also considered Michigan State, Michigan, UC and Kentucky.

Black?s older brother, former Wyoming standout Larry Black, is a redshirt sophomore defensive tackle with the Hoosiers.

"I want to make a splash," Jibreel said. "It's a good fit for me."

Black, one of the state's top defensive ends in the 2010 class, is the second area-player to commit to the Hoosiers this month. Middletown senior RB Antonio Banks orally committed to Indiana in June.

Wish we would have offered, this kid is going to be a stud imo. I know we were very close to offering, just never ended up doing it :(
He is Willie Mobley all over again. Not that Willie wasn't a good player, but he just couldn't find a position on the DL... too much of a tweener. I'll take who we have now + Floyd and call it a nice haul for the year. Also, wouldn't mind adding Hankins to that as well. Black does look good on film, he is obviously a D-1A player, but in HS you can get away with where he is at physically.

To me, I don't see him being a tweener such as Mobley. I also think Floyd is a big, big if and someone I don't see coming.

Luckily we have great depth at DT on our roster now, but hey, you can never have too many of them. It's not a big loss, I just think Jibreel is going to have a great career and I wish that would have been at :osu: We'll get to see him in the Cinci matchup at least.

Ohio: Football players evaluate recruiting options
Some Cincinnati commits considering college visits in January.
Sunday, December 20, 2009
By: Mike Dyer

The ultra-competitive game of area college football recruiting continued last week as some high school seniors began to approach the New Year with a bit less certainty than they did at the time of their oral commitment.

With national signing day almost a month away, some recruits affected by the latest coaching carousel are considering various options as national signing day approaches Feb. 3.

Cincinnati Wyoming senior defensive lineman Jibreel Black, who has orally committed to the University of Cincinnati, is one player considering other schools.

Black, like most other Cincinnati commits, is still solid with the Bearcats, but wants to consider his options before signing day. He plans to take official visits to Cincinnati, Michigan State, Louisville and Indiana in January. On Wednesday, Cincinnati hired Central Michigan coach Butch Jones to replace Brian Kelly, who left the second week of December to become Notre Dame?s new coach.

Black, who is 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, was Division III first-team all-state this past season. He had 9? sacks and 61 tackles for Wyoming, which was a Division III state runner-up.

Black orally committed to Indiana this summer, before he switched his commitment to the Bearcats in late October. The Cincinatti Enquirer reported Black is expected to visit all four schools in January, with the Cincinnati visit on Jan. 8 and Michigan State on Jan. 15.

Wyoming senior DL Jibreel Black (UC commit) may cancel official visits he planned to take to Michigan, Michigan State and Indiana, according to Wyoming coach Bernie Barre.

Black, who orally committed to UC this past fall, took an official visit to UC this past weekend.

"I am not sure if Jibreel is going to make his other visits," Barre wrote in an e-mail. "He was very happy with UC this past weekend and may cancel the other visits."

Black has been considering other visits this month as he continues to weigh his options after the UC coaching change.

Well, that should shift Tom Beaver's opinion of him. Six weeks ago, Jatashun Beachum was getting glowing reviews and 50.1% treatment. That waned, now the beav is all on Black's jock saying their staff prefers Jibreel. Guess it's time for another flip-flop. :roll1:

Too be fair he has said this since the beginning of last summer. Black was at the top of the staff's board and posters such have Maizeman have said similar things. However, I still think the beav is a punk.
