"I'm definitely going to try to get a few kids to come up there with me, I'm going to do a little bit of recruiting," the 6-foot, 200-pound added. "I was handed a list of kids in this area that I need to start speaking to and get them familiarized with Ohio State and the coaching staff and the kind of program they are running up there. I definitely am going to talk to other kids, not only at Boone High School, but other kids through Facebook to try to spark some interest up there."

Awesome. Recruit well, Johnny! :osu:

Hopefully he can gain more than 6 yards on his fake punts......also, amazing how he gained a 'star' (going from 2* to 3*), after being recruited by tOSU. I find it amusing how other schools flock to someone offered by one of the football powers, with the adage, if they're worth of being recruited by XXXXXX, then maybe we ought to look at them too.

Might be fun for Urban to look at a kid, and have them signed by a rival, when he didn't really want them at all. Second thought, not such a good idea, using a kid as a pawn in a game......my bad.

Agreed that it wouldn't be smart to make a game out of a kid's recruiting, but in this case the kid would benefit by getting offers that he wouldn't have had otherwise, rather than getting no OSU offer and no other good offers.

Ohio State commit Johnny Townsend earns invite to U.S. Army All-American Bowl

Orlando Boone punter Johnny Townsend, who is committed to Ohio State's 2013 recruiting class, received a nice little surprise on Monday after practice.

The 6-foot, 200-pound senior even thought the news that he had been named an All-American might have been the work of some practical jokers, but it didn't take long for him to find out it was for real.

Townsend, who averages 43.8 yards per punt this season, has been named to the East roster for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be played Jan. 5, in San Antonio, Texas.

"It's incredible ... just a huge honor. When I first found out, I was a little in shock because it seemed so unreal," Townsend said. "To get an opportunity to play in such a big game like this is just a huge honor.

"I wouldn?t be able to do it without coach Nick Fleming at Dr. Phillips or and coach Michael Husted at NCS [National Camp Series], who both helped me get to this point."

Fleming, a former Florida Gators kicker, is an assistant coach with Dr. Phillips this season. He has been heavily involved with area kickers in his weekly kicking camps. Husted is a former NFL kicker who now devotes his focus to his own business Husted Kicking.

Townsend joins former Boone players WR Marvin Bracy (2012), now at Florida State, and OL David Harding (2008), now at Duke, as recent Boone All-Americans. They both played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

He also makes the fifth Ohio State commit to be invited the 2013 Army Bowl. Townsend joins fellow future Buckeyes ATH Ezkiel Elliott of John Burroughs School (St. Louis, Mo.), DT Michael Hillof Pendleton (S.C.), OT Evan Lisle of Centerville (Ohio) and CB Eli Woodard of Voorhees (N.J.) Eastern.

Townsend selected as a 2012-13 U.S. Army All-American

ORLANDO --

Johnny Townsend has had a senior season to remember. Now, he says all that?s left is to with the 60th anniversary of the ?Battle for the Barrel? against Edgewater this Friday.

?This is the biggest game of the season,? said Townsend. ?Ever since I?ve been here at Boone I have not had a chance to win the barrel so this being my senior season I?m gonna play my heart out. I?m going to trying my best to win it back.?

Even though the 5-4 Braves did not earn a trip to the state playoffs Townsend has had several successes on and off the field.

The fall campaign started off with a bang when Urban Meyer offered the Boone punter a football scholarship to play at Ohio State. Townsend, who averages 44 yards per punt, began focusing on his specialist duties just two years ago.

The good fortune continued for the Braves senior when he was invited to the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, named to the First Team All-District and voted Boone?s Homecoming King all in the same week.

Townsend will spend a week in San Antonio, Texas to play in the 2013 Army Bowl on Jan. 5. Winter Park?s Asiantii Woulard, who is committed to USF, is the second player in Central Florida selected to play in the game.

I'm really excited about Johnny coming in. The height and length of the punts is fantastic, but my favorite part is how quickly he gets the ball off.

The mechanics of the kick are nearly identical for good snaps, high snaps and snaps to the side. Very impressive coaching and very impressive focus.

I'm glad to see you made it to The Game - can't wait to see you when it's your turn!

ORLANDO --

The Army All-American crew made a pit stop at Boone High School Tuesday morning to present senior punter Johnny Townsend with his jersey and official invitation to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game.

"It?s a huge honor? they actually selected 90 kids out of the entire nation and I think it?s a huge honor to be selected," Johnny Townsend said. ?I?ve been working hard, harder than I have ever been working in preparation for this game. It?s going to be the biggest game of my life."

The Ohio State commit will take the national stage January 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Evans WR Tony Stevens will also be representing Central Florida in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl game.
