James Quick (WR Louisville)

My $.02....

I think Quick would really like to go to Louisville, as it's his hometown school and they have a pretty good team lead by a good coach with good players. His trip to Columbus obviously impressed him and gave him a good feel for what he'd be missing out on if he went to UL. If Chuck Strong stays at Louisville, it's pretty likely he'll end up there. If he takes the job at Arky, he'll probably come here. It's going to be pretty tough for us to win this kid over, as we've already given him one of the best venues we could offer. However, I read that he's taking an official for the scUM game, which can't hurt our chances.

I feel too much is made out of the Charlie Strong thing. If we lost Quick to Louisville it won't be because he wanted to play for Strong, but rather due to his belief that he had the same chance to go to the NFL while playing much closer to home. Charlie Strong wasn't at Louisville when we lost Michael Bush to them, it was John L. Smith.

If the argument is about last second coaching changes shaking up the recruiting balance, sure, I can see that. But that argument can be applied to any recruit and thus redundant.

No recruit should ever go to Louisville hoping to have the same coach. It's a stepping stone job. You either suck and get fired, or you do well and leave. They haven't had a coach for more than 5 years in almost 2 decades, and that was Howard Schnellenberger who was a hometown guy. Even he took off. Coaches go to Louisville to pad their resume for a real job.

I think such a big deal is being made because right now Charlie Strong is the face of the program and everyone expects him to be gone at the end of the year. If we were going against Cincinnatti when they had Chip Kelly it would be the same story.

It's crazy to say the possible departure of a successful up and coming coach like Strong won't have an impact. No question it will but I don't see it being the major factor here. Look at it this way, he may be keeping us even with UL because he already thinks Strong is leaving. What if they buck up and ink him to a longer deal for more money? I know it's unlikely but if they did I could see it being the tipping point for him signing with them. The possible departure during his playing time is already baked in the cake imo.

Exactly. Charlie Strong or no Charlie Strong, you are not going to Louisville over OSU to play for the coach.

Even when Chip Kelly was at Cincy we never lost any recruits to them. But that aside, I think too big of a deal is made out of Strong and/or Louisville. Let's put it this way: you are not going to Louisville because you think Strong is a better coach than Meyer or that Strong/UL will develop your talents better than Meyer/OSU.

I associate Chuck Strong with being the main reason they have talent in that program. If he's not there, that inflow of talent ceases to exist and it becomes a far less desirable place to play, even for a hometown kid.

Strong has done a good job there, but he wasn't there when they beat out every program in the nation for Brian Brohm and Michael Bush. While coaches come and go, it's obvious that the constant with the kids is the appeal to play at home.
