'14 VA DE Da'Shawn Hand (Alabama Verbal)

Woodbridge head coach Kevin Smith could tell Hand was getting tired of all the travel when Hand called him one day while down at Alabama.

Before the Alabama trip, Hand was one of three juniors at the invite only and Nike-sponsored The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. July 5-8. The event brought together 152 of the nation?s top high school football prospects.

Hand also attended the invite-only Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in Atlanta (June 22-24) and took unofficial visits to University of North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech this summer.

Hand is grateful for the opportunities he?s received. Among the different schools and coaches he?s come into contact with face to face, he especially loved meeting Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide?s highly successful head coach who has led Alabama to two national championships, including last season.

Hand already has over 50 offers, include one from Alabama and has a game plan in place to narrow down his choices to 10 schools after the end of his junior season.

But for the moment, enough was enough.

Hand, the Cardinal District Co-Defensive MVP who recorded 21 sacks in 10 games in 2011, was scheduled to attend the Friday Night Lights event at Ohio State July 27, but canceled. Instead, he took a few days off and visited family in Delaware.

?He was getting a little tired,? Kevin Smith said. ?He was looking forward to getting back with the guys.?

In Smith?s mind, that conversation with Hand when Hand was in Alabama captured his star lineman at his best.

?He?s just so humble,? Kevin Smith said. ?Here he is at Alabama and he?s calling to say he misses his teammates.?

Da'Shawn Hand stays humble
Woodbridge's Da'Shawn Hand talks about recruiting process, new... (Added: August 19, 2012)
Junior Da'Shawn Hand already has more than 50 college offers. (more)

Da?Shawn Hand beamed with pride. Four sacks, double-digit tackles. Not a bad performance, the Woodbridge High School standout defensive end thought to himself, following the 7-0 loss to eventual Cardinal District champion Hylton.

And yet, when he arrived home later that Friday night to tell his dad about his success, Sharif Hand had only thing to say to his son: ?Hey four-sack man, go sack that kitchen.?

Talk about the game? Maybe later. Discuss ways to improve his game? Perhaps at some point.

But right then, Hand was not the star-studded lineman with a horde of Division I schools in hot pursuit of his services. He was just another teenager with chores to do. And this night it was cleaning up the dishes.

Hand wanted to still exalt in the afterglow of his stats from that game, but his father was having none of it. There was a time and place for everything and right now, it was time to fulfill domestic responsibilities.

Hand was not thrilled about doing the dishes or doing any type of chore for that matter. But he never questioned it. He understood the purpose of his father?s request.

?That?s what keeps me grounded,? Hand said.

When Da'Shawn Hand gives you a handshake, you get an inkling of what opposing quarterbacks feel seeing the Woodbridge (Va.) High defensive end shed a blocker: There's no easy escape, and in a few seconds you're likely to feel pain.
Hand, a junior who is 6-4 and 245 pounds, had 84 tackles and 21 sacks last season. He is considered the top player in his class by 247sports.comand has more than 30 scholarship offers.
Though confident, Hand doesn't act like a can't-miss prospect, because he knows there's no such thing.

Mr Hand to be on hand for THE GAME:

http://www.the-ozone.net/recruiting/2012_13/SundayRundown12_11_11.html

Urban Meyer and staff continue to push the recruiting envelope beyond reason. They recently convinced the nations No. 1 rated prospect for 2014 ? defensive end Da?Shawn Hand ? to visit for the OSU-Michigan game later this month. With such a bountiful recruiting class of defensive linemen for 2012 and 2013, it is a coup to get a prospect like Hand to even consider Ohio State.
Sounds like the coaching staff's hair is on fire.

SI (Mike Farrell) - Da'Shawn Hand update

11/14

Woodbridge (Va.) Woodbridge Senior defensive end Da'Shawn Hand, one of our first 2014 five-stars and the leader in the clubhouse for the No. 1 player in the country, decided to head on an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Nov. 24 for when the Buckeyes play against Michigan. Why is this important? Because the other option was the Iron Bowl to watch Alabama host Auburn.
Hand is interested in the Buckeyes and Wolverines, so the game itself will make an impression on him, but everyone knows Meyer will likely handle Hand's recruitment himself down the stretch and will roll out the red carpet for him.
Virginia Tech is still the team to beat due to his relationship with Bud Foster and North Carolina has impressed as well as has Alabama. If Hand is going to head far from home and up north, this visit could have a lot to do with it.

Catching up with Da'Shawn Hand. Got to speak with Vrabel and Meyer. Zach Smith is his primary recruiter.

You were at the Ohio State-Michigan game yesterday. What did you do on your visit? I got to meet the coaches and all of the people were nice. I got to see the campus and it was really cool. The game atmosphere was great, the fans were loud, the student section was really good, and it was a good game.
