Introducing: 2015 guard Jalen Coleman
Jul. 09, 2011

Jalen Coleman hasn?t so much as played a high school varsity game, but got a taste of it this summer playing with Cathedral and again this weekend, competing up an age group with the 15-and-under Eric Gordon All-Stars.

The 6-foot-2, 155-pound Coleman is an impressive talent who helped the Eric Gordon team to a runner-up finish in the 15s championship bracket.

?It was a good experience,? Coleman said. ?Chemistry-wise, it went really well. We were playing together and just trying to win every game. Even in practice, it felt like our communication level on the court was great.?

While there is obviously a big jump from the middle school to varsity level in terms of speed and physical play, Coleman said he?s started to feel more at home.

?I struggled my first week tempo-wise,? he said. ?Making the transition from middle school to varsity is tough, but by the third tournament at Purdue (team camp), I caught on. My teammates get me going and I just try to stay with them.?

Coleman is picking some very early interest from high-major schools, including Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue. He got a chance to play in front of several college coaches this weekend.

?I saw them and I was a little nervous,? he said. ?I just tried to play my game and not worry about it.?

Coleman talked about some of his strengths and weaknesses.

?I think my jump shot and using my height as a point guard are things I can use to my advantage,? he said. ?What I need to work on is adding more weight. That will really help with my game.?

On Ohio State -- ?You look at the past success they?ve been having. Coach Matta is a great coach. You look at Deshaun Thomas and all of the recent players who have come out of there and had success either overseas or in the NBA or even business wise.?

Baller. Definitely a stud SG.

BTW, he transferred to a Prep school in NW Indiana. No longer at Cathedral. Not sure why he made the move, but a little disappointing personally as I'd loved to seen a few more games this year.

He, along with his talented brother, Isaiah, moved to La Lumiere (the basketball factory in NW Indiana that has produced a fair amount of top-flight talent, including IU's Hanner Mosquera-Perea).

The Coleman family claims the move was spurred by the scholarships available at La Lumiere, as Cathedral has a pretty hefty price tag. The private school in La Porte, Indiana is not an IHSAA member, and thus its athletes aren't eligible for state honors.

Interesting. Looks like he'll get the chance to play some top talent then. I do have some family in The Region (NW Indiana) so maybe I'll squeeze in a trip.

To expand on my earlier comment, I really like his game. Smooth. Kinda reminds me of Ron Lewis- good athleticism, not great. Likes to get to his spots in the lane and can handle the rock a little, but definitely has a rise-and-fire game.

Btw, not sure he deserves his own thread, but on the subject on Indiana basketball, K.J. Walton out of Brownsburg, IN really impressed me as well. Super athletic, rebounds well for a guard, and just played like no one else was out there (in a good way)...it was his game anytime he was on the court. Always in control. He's going to rise and make a team happy in a couple years, in my opinion.
