A premier LB in the 2015 class, Columbus product Anthony McKee fond of Ohio State, learning about others: Buckeyes recruiting

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Anthony McKee made the 200-mile trek from Columbus to Ann Arbor this summer to participate in a Michigan football camp, all the while thinking that a short three-hour drive wouldn’t make for much change from his Central Ohio home.

Michigan is just like Ohio State, he thought. Two big football programs on quests for championships, both with memorable traditions – albeit different – that make for some of the best you’ll find in the world of college football.

McKee wasn’t prepared.

“Michigan,” McKee paused with a smile during a recent interview with Cleveland.com before continuing with the rest of his answer. “It was different than anything I have ever seen before.”

It wasn’t the stadium, or the fans or even the way the Michigan coaching staff, led by Brady Hoke, approached its instructional camp. It was two words he heard, and saw, everywhere he looked – Beat Ohio.

“At first it was crazy because when I first heard it, I actually laughed,” the Walnut Ridge product said. “When you grow up in Columbus, everybody talks about Ohio State and going to Ohio State – and to hate Michigan. That’s all you hear down here. Then at Michigan, all I heard was ‘Beat Ohio.’

“I’m seeing that everywhere, and it was crazy because I never heard that in my entire life. The coaches I was talking to looked at me when I laughed and said, ‘Yeah, you get that a lot around here.’ ”
