2006 BCS, polls, Bowl Predictions and computer ratings

Yeah, I hate starting out at the top. I enjoy having to jump over other undefeated teams hoping that there will only be 2 at the most left or else we get screwed.

good point. if you start at 4 and the teams above you don't lose then you end up on the outside looking in. if we take care of our business then nobody is leaping us. we'll be there at the end -- and that is what matters.

UT is not the #2 team in the nation, IMO.

amen to that.

if OU is in freefall for losing their QB and now starting an inexperienced kid under center why is Texas so highly ranked when they are in exactly the same situation?

the last time the Texas QB snapped the ball it was on Friday night in a high school stadium! I'd take OU's situation over that -- Paul Thompson has at least played in a college game!

lots of times highly touted early season match-ups turn into a bust as one team is exposed as badly over ranked. thinking that may happen, but not to the team currently ranked #1 in the country!

I remember reading somewhere that Spurrier always votes Duke at #25 in the preseason poll since he started out there. That should show you how much the preseason poll means.

Thank you. I was having a serious WTF? moment over that Duke vote; their coach doesn't even have a vote in the poll.

That Spurrier thing you read must be it.

I don't know about UT being #2, but I don't think that you can drop them too low, as we do have several pieces returning from an undefeated championship team, and many of the top ranked teams are losing key players, and as someone said, ND returning some their defensive players isn't really a plus.

I would think that the coaches poll would be more reflective of voting a defending champ higher, and I also think that the coaches poll would differ from the AP poll in voting teams like WVA higher because they have an easier schedule, and an easier road to the NC game (that seems to be more of a media stance.) The coaches seem more likely to rank the best teams higher, not who they think can go undefeated. If they think that UT is going to lose to tOSU, but that they are better than any other team, than they should vote UT 2nd. Sure they would drop in the polls after the Sept. matchup, but no reason not to vote them No. 2, even if they think that they will lose their second game of the season, to the team that they rank no. 1.

If I was a voter, right now I would have tOSU and UT close to the top, after Sept. 9, one team drops, no big deal. Let that game decide which one gets to be at the top of the polls going into conference play.
