2009 Linebacker Discussion

No talk of Storm Klein who some think is an amazing talent? Wonder if the coaches would trust him enough for him to play over...say..Sabino, who many love also. (I'm a Sabino fan)
Wonder if Spit is athletic enough to hold off Sabino?
We won't be lacking for talent and competition at all the LB positions!

i doubt popularity among the fans translates well into playing time.

Come to think of it, I have never seen this much competition for PT at linebacker.

faux-linebacker-u has a huge drop-off after Lee and Bowman(sp?); and who knows if Lee is going to be back to his old form.

Real LBU is going to be platooning an ensemble of guys that bring a variety of skill sets to the table, yet are all versatile enough to leave the play-book wide open regardless of who's on the field.

But the thing that really has me excited about this group is something that just struck me the other day... The defensive line improved dramatically over the course of last season. They really started to gell.
If the DL continues to improve like they did last fall, this group of linebackers is going to have room to use their speed and run around making plays.

This year might actually be more fun than I've been expecting...

Wait?!?!? You mean the coaches aren't reading these threads before they decide who plays?

Next, you probably want to convince me that the Easter bunny isn't real.

Read Duane Long's blog. The Duane Long Report
An insider and many close to the program think he's the next great one at linebacker.

i was going to but stopped browsing after i read this:

<<<2. Jim Tressel, Ohio State? Is any coach more stubborn about his system and way of doing things? Sure, he is successful to a point, but he gets a ton of talent every year and lately has found a way to get pummeled in the big games. It?s almost as if he is satisfied to lose, as long as it is his way.<<<

Some fans are not going to like it but it sounds like this guy has been paying attention. He voices the same concerns that alot of Buckeye fans are talking about right now. The last line is the one that gets my attention and what I am compelled to respond to.
I am not offering an argument for "Tresselball". I an putting forward an explanation. Here is why Jim Tressel does it the way he does it. It is very simple. 5 national championships. In his mind Tresselball is a formula for success. It has worked for him 5 times, and most important it has worked at the highest level of competition. The national championship game was something that Buckeyes fans needed. It may be the worst thing that happened to us. It confirmed, at least in Jim Tressels mind, that he could win at this level too doing the same old same old that had brought 4 national championships to Youngstown State. I think so much of the problem goes back to success at the 1-AA level doing things this way. That is a different level of football. Some schools have better talent than others but there are no game changers at that level. No players that can completely mess up a game plan like there are at this level. This is not a Jim Tressel thing. Would anyone change a way of doing things when the tried and true is working for them? Why would anyone choose to leave their comfort level when it has been very successful?

if that is the limit of this guys football knowledge i suspect i won't find his opinion on the lb'er situation particularly enlightening.

Yeah, I just can't put a lot of faith in Long's analysis when I read comments like this about the upcoming season:

I hope I don't have to explain to anyone why that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on an OSU website.

I will have to agree on this one.

I respect Long for his willingness to put himself out there and he is quite reasonable when he is challenged and he doesn't seem to take it personally.

However, he is probably better suited to discuss cigars and scotch on bucknuts. He does have quite the following though...

Yea! That caught my eye also. But, he does have some good "insider" access! And others have commented on the Storm Klein thing. Is DL the last word on Buckeye football? Of course not. Is he interesting and gets good info? Yes.

You all TOTALLY missed the context on that one...

He was saying that IF all of these things are true (including not missing a beat at corner) it won't matter if we don't:
  • Develop a go-to receiver AND
  • Develop a REAL fullback
By including "not missing a beat at corner" in his list of things that could happen and still not matter; it was clear to me that he was implying that it was very unlikely.

DL is still very upbeat on the possibilities of this team. Duane and his contact see what Tressel sees....a young, talented team with the desire to excel. Whether it all comes together is the question. We are loaded at LBer!

:so:

that one seems a bit odd, but I guess given Duane's opinion on Tressel's willingness to adjust offensively, he is expecting us to line up in the I-Formation with two tight ends like we did with Beanie and Boeckman

that little bit of analysis really turned me off to Duane Long, did he sleep through the entire 2006 season? but I digress...

He is exceedingly negative at times. And the part about no game changers on the I-AA level? Just really false. I wonder how familiar Duane is with 1-AA ball. Armanti Edwards and Adrian Petersen say "hello."
