2012 Defense Discussion

The biggest difference to me is still Boren.

He makes the reads/fills/plays that simply weren't being made before.

As great as that is for 2012 it is equally scary for 2013.

I agree. Boren has been exactly what this defense has needed for this year which is why it sucks we have to lose him next year.

I'm not sure we have another linebacker with the attitude and leadership than Zach has given us.

Boren has stabilized the defense and helped everyone do their own job rather than feeling like they have to cover someone's mistake every play.
Next year we will need someone to step up and take Boren's spot so the linebacker's won't be a weakness. I'm certain one of the young guys will.
Now, if we can just get Bryant to tackle people instead just going for the bone-crusher every time.......
But next year a lot of young guys will have to step up their game for the defense to be solid. I love the talent level next year.

I find Boren's success encouraging for next year.

IMO Boren is getting it done because of his understanding of the game more than his physical ability.

Next year we will have six Sophomore LBs with another year of experience and a greater understanding of the game and potentially more physical ability and speed than Zach. Potential is nothing until it is realized, but the potential is certainly there.

One of the saddest memories I have from 60 years of watching buckeye football, was watching Shazier trying to play against Michigan on one good leg. My fear is that we might see a repeat this year, especially as tomorrow will probably be the most physical game of the year (while the wolverines play Iowa).

Understand that this is still not Urban's team on the field, but I've been spoiled by a long string of outstanding linebacker play; a Bobby Carpenter goes down and a James Laurenitus steps up. Woody, Earl, Coop and Tress always had a trio of backers that ranked among the best in the conference and usually among the best in the nation.

Some of you who follow the recruiting news, what happened at this position over the last 4 years? Why does this current crop seem so thin?

OSU's LB depth is enrolled elsewhere:

Oh, man, don't get me started.

I was noticing how sound Stanford is at tackling and something occurred to me.

I haven't seen anyone bitching about the Ohio State tackling in quite some time. There have been some huge changes on defense in that last few weeks.
