2012 Defense Discussion

Some of the worst tackling I've seen from a osu defense In a very long time. Hopefully this can be fixed by next week, and more specifically for conference play

Wasn't any blown coverage this game. Just extremely poor job by the back 7 shedding blocks, taking pursuit, and finally wrapping up.

Saftey's IMO are the biggest Issue. We need them to improve QUICK if we want any shot at Big Ten titles and beyond starting next year.

Going to be hard. Both Bryant and Barnett have a ton of experience and these issues have plagued them for over a year now. Maybe this is simply what the are. Not even sure what we could do to send a message. I suppose OJ could earn a shot at one of the safety spots and maybe give another kid a shot at STAR.. whether it be a Bogard or Murray... I don't know, can't have safeties that can't tackle, especially when their coverage isn't so hot either

Barnett was good last year, I have confidence he'll get it right. Bryant, otoh, how many big plays is 1 player going to be responsible for and fail on his assignment?

Quite worried about safety play going forward, the play is poor and the young talent isn't really there. Might not be a bad thing if Burrows plays safety, Vonn Bell will certainly help. Our safety play hasn't been great outside of Kurt for the last 5-6 years, hopefully the light bulb turns on for Bryant like it did Kurt because right now he is a major liability.

We have a lot of really good players on our D and a lot of young talent, these missed assignments and poor tackling is unacceptable and it's on Luke to fix it, why he's making $750k a year. I have plenty of patience and Cal do have some tremendous skill players, hate seeing the same players making the same mistakes over and over again though. Funny that they pulled Curtis Grant after 1 series, maybe they should pull Bryant for Bogard or Tanner and he'll get the message. IDK, I'm not a coach but quite sure Urban is pretty pissed about giving up the most yards at home since 99. Sky is not falling but there are some clouds.

I'm not putting it Luke just yet. Tackling has never really been an issue under him for our team. At some point the players need to be held accountable for tackling like a powder puff defense. Start benching veterans if after years in the program they still choose to ignore the fundamentals of football.

It was last year, and it is again this year. Tressel's teams were renowned for excellent tackling, and since he left (along with Heacock) we've had issues.

Basically the same defensive personnel as last year though. I just find it hard to believe Luke forgot how to teach tackling after what we saw each year up until this group.

I'm confident that Urban will address these issues. He wanted more sacks and more pressure on the QB and look what today brought forth. He wanted better production out of the WR's and we have seen a vast improvement there as well. He'll get it done.

UAB is a perfect team to get back to fundamentals. Focus on playing more disciplined ball, communicate, wrap up when tackling, work on angles and putting yourself in the right position.

All these things can be coached.

It's no surprised that after we lose Rolle, Homan, and Hines two years ago the tackling in the back 7 has been awful. The coaches also the past two seasons have been here for the most part on defense so certainly they need to figure something out. As stated it's why Luke is making 3/4 a mil.

Also to the poster who stated Burrows/Bell at Saftey. That's my assumption as well, and I hope we can Land a big time guy like Bell.

As long as Robey stays around I have no doubt Burrows will be given a shot at saftey and to be honest I'd love to see it.

I'm just not sure we have the personnel in the middle of the defense right now to be honest.
