A few thoughts on Friday Night Lights...
- First off, if you've never been, you're really missing out... if for not other reason that you can go down onto the field after everything wraps up. The production that Pantoni and staff put together is first rate and every single thing that they do is thought out meticulously. For recruitniks, it's near heaven... especially when you are talking about the sheer talent that was on the field. Despite a lot of guys there that didn't work out, more talent was on the field working out than any other Friday Night Lights we've seen yet here in Columbus.
- Tyjon Lindsey stole the show at WR. He was uncanny at getting behind the defender on the deep ball because of his speed and crispness of his routes. Even broke some ankles. Proved he was more than a slot dot today... he's going to be difficult to guard no matter where he lines up. Overall MVP of the camp, IMO
- The quarterbacks on display today were IMPRESSIVE. Emory Jones in the real deal. Tight spirals all day, super long arms, athletic. I thought he was arguably the best of the 3 QBs today. Tate looked good and was a leader out there today, but was shaky at times... not always throwing tight spirals, not always on the same page as his WR during the competition phase (which is REALLY easy to do in this setting). Definetly looks more comfortable on the scramble and outside of the pocket. He's got "it" though and is a perfect fit for this team, coaching staff, and playbook. Danny Clark has a strong arm and was out there having fun, even running down the field to celebrate after throwing a TD at the death of the competition section. Don't sleep on Danny and his will to be great, because I think he's gonna get there.
- I'm not sure who it was, but one of the RBs (#23 or #32) was really impressive. Tall, built guy, did not drop a ball the entire time during the competition phase, ran like a Mack truck. Had a day-glow orange headband and more swagger than anyone else on the field today. Not sure if that was Brian Snead or not, but if he was... good gravy.
- The Ohio WRs were very impressive tonight. Jaylen Harris was every bit as great as any of the national guys that were in attendance. He's a legit 6'5" and remarkably strong, multiple times pulling 50/50 balls away from defenders and turning upfield. Was the tallest WR there that was working out. CBs were fighting in line to be the one to go up against him and test themselves against him. There's been speculation that he may not be a "take" to this coaching staff, but let me tell you... he's a take, if you have room. This is not... NOT... a plan B guy. There was a situation that happened with him right in front of me, but until I see someone else report on it, I'm going to remain mum on it. And not to be outdone, Lynn Bowden was the 2nd best WR on the field today behind Tyjon (not AT ALL a knock on Jaylen... Lynn just balled his brains out). He beat Darnay Holmes 3 of the 4 times they battled head to head at one point (with the lone one missed opportunity being a bad pass by the QB). To be fair, Darnay looked winded, but Lynn got him and Darnay was looking frusterated. Very workmanlike, he just beat folks one-on-one, even if he was covered like a blanket. Only missed one or two catches on the day that I saw, and he went up there a LOT. Amazing hands. Lots of folks buzzing about him in the stands... if I'm buying stock in any one player, I'm buying Lynn's to go up. Gill I didn't pay as much attention to, but he had one catch that was made you say "oooooo!!" today. Arguably the catch of the day, somehow keeping in bounds on a one handed catch with the pressure on
- Nate Meyer (Urban's son) is a fighter at WR. Had trouble getting away from jams at the line and down the field... just couldn't hand fight or shake em off... but he earned an obvious pass interference/defensive holding penalty every time. JT Barrett intervened and started throwing to him instead of the HS QBs. One particular play, when the corner thought he had him beat, Nate pulled a double (or triple) move and threw a wheel route onto the end of a play that schooled the corner for a TD. IMO, he's D1 material... likely going to make a MAC school very happy
- Chase Young was hard to miss working out with the D-Line, if for no other reason, he was the only recruit there not wearing the mandatory red or black. Explosive, tall, solid, athletic, quick twitch. Really excited for him pulling the trigger last night
- Tate Martell, Trevon Grimes, and Tyjon Lindsey were inseparable after the camp concluded, being no farther than shoulder width apart for the 20 minutes or so after camp concluded, taking pics, conversing with fans and well-wishers, and signing autographs. It was almost comical how attached at the hips the 3 of them were. Makes a smile creep upon a Buckeye's face just thinking about what a trio those 3 would make in S&G...
- Darnay looked like the real deal early on, though seemed like he got tired and started getting beat on the longer plays. His feet are incredibly fast and no one guarded underneath routes better than he did. Also played some WR, and was right there with the elite WRs at the camp. May need to work on his cardio, but incredibly impressive athlete with lots of god-given ability. Dude also has some freakin chiseled arms
- The TEs, Ruckert and Kuntz , joined the catching competition phase late and were a real mismatch with their size. Both had great hands. Thinking back, I can't remember which one was which, but one was a little bit better at route running and the other a couple times ran routes where they would run through the defender rather than juke them to get open and catch the ball. Both had very impressive hands though. They were getting covered by much faster CB prospects, who had them covered like blankets, but they would both come down with the ball the majority of the time. As far as I'm concerned, they are 1A & 1B as far as options go. You can't go wrong with either one, though was maybe a little bit more impressed with #35, whichever one that was
- Please excuse not being able to comment on too many other folks, because I had trouble figuring out exactly who was who at all of the positions. I'm a game tape watcher and don't have everyone's face memorized. There were a number of DBs, WRs, LBs, and QBs that stood out (amongst others), but I know them by number in my head right now
