Nick Saban (ex-HC Alabama Crimson Tide)

Maybe the Alabama D wouldn't have been on the field as much if they'd have stuck with Henry. Screw you for making me "defend" them Jwins :). My only point is that they have been a really good team and were really good last year and within a TD of the best team in the country at the end. There's only one game more you can actually achieve.

Yes, after years of the SEC being given a free pass to the NCG and Alabama dominating CFB... chinks in the armor are showing.
Not only has Alabama falled flat the last two years, effectively losing a home game in the Sugar Bowl, but the SEC West got dismantled as well.
If that FSU transfer doesn't turn out (and its questionable if Sims was the best they had last year), they're in for another questionable season. Despite recruiting at a very high level, people are picking Auburn to have a better year.
I'd say chinks are definitely starting to show in their dynasty.
I didn't say they're about to fall off the map and become Purdue.

If Muschamp can come in and turn Auburns defense around and still put out the same offense I can see Auburn dominating Bama the next couple years. If Auburn had any defense last year they would have taken out Bama in the iron bowl last year IMO.
Auburn choked That Iron Bowl. Their offense wasn't even that consistent, they just had a number of explosive, big plays that tore apart that Bama defense, and it started with the mobile QB which has shown to give Smart run Defenses fits now by everything listed previously with the big slow run stopping DL, and just as big run stopping LBs and they put the DBs in bad one on one positions on islands against spread teams. Recipe for disaster. Of Auburn starts beating Bama regularly, ol St Nick may be shown the door if he doesn't bow out because they won't let that happen in Tide country. And ol St Nick is at it again with this recent recruiting class looking the same on defense, and they still can't find a competent QB because the guys that go there know they'll throw the ball very little as the run game is the bread and butter and Saban has said as much after the sugar bowl loss.

I wouldn't call it choking... the same DB we abused (#4 IIRC) got torched by Auburn's 2 bigtime WRs. The two offenses capable of lighting him up did so with impunity. Alabama couldn't hide him until they finally took him off the field completely. I was surprised his replacement, who held on in the 4th quarter and did decently, didn't fill in when they played us.

- Didn't Urban win an NC after Saban?
- MSU seems to be doing pretty great now...

Saban is a great coach, but he's only avg to above avg without talent advantage.
He was meh at MSU & NFL. He was nobody until LSU - which has a similar recruiting situations to Ohio State. No in-state competition in a talent rich state.

Right now Auburn's rankings are just based upon them almost beating Bama. I actually believed it for a minute that they are a national title contender next year. Then I thought about what they did this year:

1. They finished 8-5: This isn't an 8-5 where they struggled at the beginning of the year with a 'young team' and then found themselves and dominated. This was an 8-5 team that lost 4 of it's last 5.

2. The sole win in that last 5 was the Bulldogs. No, not Georgia (Georgia beat them the week before by a whopping 34-7), it was the mighty Bulldogs of Samford. That wasn't even a 72-3 beating, that was a 31-7 win. No, they didn't score 31 pts in the 1st quarter and then pull their starters. It's a team they couldn't score on in the first quarter (ended 0-0), and then went to half time up 17-7, before finding the end zone once in the 3rd and once in the 4th. Starters played well into the 4th quarter. When I think back on it, it was just classy of Gus to not run up the score like TCU did against them.

3. Best wins against LSU (7-6), Ole Miss (got exposed by TCU) and Kansas State, and we all know how great the Big 12 is post bowl season. But let's not get hung up on the wins and losses.

4. Let's talk about those Auburn players that braved the mighty SEC west last season. Starting at quarterback, Nick Marshall, accounted for about 3300 yards last year, will be replaced by junior Jeremy Johnson. Cameron Artis-Payne who rushed over 300 times last season for a whopping 1600 yards will be suiting up for the Carolina Panthers. His backup Corey Grant, who rushed for 360 yards last season will be suiting up for the Jags. Leading Receiver Sammy Coates is now a steeler, but they managed to hold on to D'haquille Williams, who was really option 1b in receiving last year, for his senior year, and while losing Quan Bray, they replace him with Ricardo Louis, the #4 receiver last year. This is pretty typical across the FBS, keep 2/4 of your leading receivers from last year.

5. Along the offensive line they will be replacing 3 of their 5 starters. At TE the starter and backup are gone, being replaced by a freshman. This means they lost starting QB, TE, 2/3 WR, RB and 3/5 OL, returning only 3 starters off a 'vaunted' offense can be difficult.

6. On the defensive line their lone returning starter was kicked off the team a few months ago, they also lost 2 of the backups along and D Line. So 4 new guys, 2 of them completely untested. They return 2 LBs and 2 DBs, so on the defensive side of the ball they only return 4 out of eleven guys.

Perhaps I am discounting Muschamp too much. Perhaps I'm discounting only losing to Bama by 11. I just don't see them wining the SEC let alone a national title.

And those are all valid points. But its starting to look like Alabama is turning into the slow plodding OSU of old team and Auburn and their schemes can overtake mighty Bama. Listed below are 3 of the most important areas in a Saban team(O line is another but that looks stout this year) and they all seem to have issues. Yes Marshall is gone from Auburn and an inexperienced (yet athletic) Johnson replaces him, and he should do fine in their offense. Alabama has the statue that is Jacob Comer who couldn't even beat out a mediocre at best Blake Sims after being touted as presumed starter going into last season. He's still pretty erratic, and runs like he's in cement.

Outside of Henry, Bama has issues with experience at RB. They had so many high ranked RBs in years past that either did something stupid or got pissed off and left the program and now they have 3 RBs to choose from with one being a true frosh... Ouch

And the secondary has been a big cause for concern as they keep getting torched by spread teams. And they hired a guy from the Jags and Browns to help shore up the secondary...

Auburn had a sketchy 8-5 season like you laid out yet they still almost beat mighty Bama last year, maybe it was stepping up in a rivalry game, but I think some of the SEC teams have started closing the gap on Bama. If these 3 areas aren't shored up by mid season, I believe Auburn or another SEC west team(maybe Ole Miss or LSU can get their shit together) can sneak into the CFP, as I don't see an SEC east team challenging this season either.

Agree 100%. Bama has issues, but knows how to plow through the SEC of 3 years ago. Spread teams are causing them trouble and they don't have enough speed on defense to stop them. It's pretty much the first team to fully go spread in the SEC can beat them. Auburn seems to be the only west team doing it, so I think that's why they are getting the nod. LSU is really just a slower more plodding version of Bama. These are teams built to beat each other. They will continue to beat bowl teams that play a traditional style most of the time, but will be exposed against the spread. Ole Miss and Miss St and aTm are going with more speed, but they don't have that steady infusion of talent as the other 3 sec west teams, so they each only really have a chance once or twice a decade when the stars line up and they have the right group of seniors to lead a few talented freshman. Miss St lost basically their entire team last year, so I think this year was do or die. My bet on winning the sec next year is Ole Miss. Tunsil can hurt them, but as long as they replace Bo Wallace I think they have the best shot with experience and talent. Last year they were just banged up a lot at the end of the year. But the SEC coaches can't put the annual dumpster fire as their preseason pick to win it, it would signify weakness for the traditional powers.

Yeah, Muller has been putting Miss St in the right direction, and if there was a year to win it all, it would've been last year. They lost a ton like you mentioned. Ole Miss is always a dark horse it seems, and then the season comes around and they vomit all over themselves when the spotlight is on. You were spot on with LSU and Bama, and that's why it leads me to pick Auburn this year to win. Sumlin still hasn't gotten his defense in order, and it'll be interesting if he actually has his QB of the future in Allen. Ole Miss has a ton of talent at key positions, BUT QB. It'll also be interesting in if Treadwell can come back from that nasty injury and if they can get him the ball effectively. Bama will still be Bama, and beat up on bottom feeders and expose teams who let them because they have a lot of talent that will allow them to take advantage. With the defense being Sabans baby, he has to take full blame for their issues, and the past 2yrs have shown that to the nation

Meyer Wisely Not Buying Into Saban's Concerns Regarding Timing of NFL Draft Evaluation

15-01-01-FB-0110.jpg

It's not exactly a Bret Bielema dust-up, but it will have to do until we can get the real thing.

A couple of weeks back at the SEC Media Days, Alabama head coach Nick Saban mentioned that his team's chemistry was "affected by something" between their SEC Championship Game win over Missouri and the Sugar Bowl.

He then went on to cite the December 15 deadline for juniors to submit paperwork to the NFL in order to get a draft grade, claiming that the timing could have clouded his team's preparation.

"So we're trying to get ready for a game and all of a sudden a guy finds out he's a first-round draft pick," he said. "Or a guy that thought he was a first-round draft pick finds out he's not a first-round draft pick, and we're trying to get ready and play a playoff game."

Fired up Nick Saban not happy with biography, anyone profiting from his story

How's Nick Saban feel about the Nick Saban book?

He's not real happy with it, the timing of its release or much else about it. Ending his news conference Thursday, Saban wanted to make a statement about the unauthorized biographyreleased Tuesday.

Saban's voice got louder as he spoke passionately.

Cont'd ...

---

I cannot imagine what parts, ultimately, displease him.
