The Buckeyes gained their 16th commitment of the class of 2017 today when Amir Riep of Colerain High School (Cincinnati, Ohio) verbally gave his pledge on his birthday. Riep is the third defensive back to commit in this class, and he, Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson make up a trio of four-star recruits to join the Buckeyes’ impressive 2017 recruiting class. He’s the third player to commit to the Buckeyes this weekend, joining fellow 2017 classmate Chase Young and future 2018 teammate Brian Snead.

Riep was one of the hottest prospects this spring and summer, accumulating nearly 50 offers due to his relentless camp performances. He vaulted up the recruit boards and currently sits as the #3 prospect in the state of Ohio and #114 in the nation. Riep earned his offer during Junior day at Ohio State this past January, and he immediately placed the Buckeyes at or near the top of his list. Michigan State was long thought to be the second team in the race, and, for a while there, it looked like he might go to the Spartans. Alabama was the third team in the mix, and Riep made a couple of unofficial visits to Tuscaloosa as well.

247 sports listed 27 crystal ball predictions for Riep, and 96% of them said he would end up choosing the Buckeyes. Looks like they were right.

Riep was one of the athletes selected to compete at The Opening, Nike’s big showcase out in Oregon. He spoke to Dave Berk from Scout about his feelings about Ohio State:

“The atmosphere and the feeling I get while I’m there. Coach (Kerry) Coombs being there and developing defensive backs and then putting them to the next level is important.”

Riep roomed with current Buckeye commit Antjuan Simmons while he was in Oregon, and he was surrounded by many other future Buckeyes during that time. That interaction and camaraderie only helped solidify his decision to skip last minute trips to Alabama and Michigan State and to make his final visit to Ohio State for the Friday Night Lights camp yesterday evening.

Riep’s commitment likely puts a bow on the cornerback recruitment, unless Wade or Williamson decides to decommit. Unfortunately, that means Lamont Wade and Darnay Holmes will not be a part of the Buckeye class unless a spot opens in an otherwise packed Ohio State scholarship situation.
