WR Jalin Marshall (Edmonton Elks)

Kid has loads of talent and I'm especially rooting for him since my family's from Middletown. But he BETTER be busting his ass to fix this. He single handily kept Minnesota in the game. I'm not that impressed he's putting in extra effort this week because it seems that should be the expectation. If he doesn't take care of business there will be plenty of playmakers in line to step in. It is Ohio State, after all.

Funny, Urban had the exact opposite reaction. "Go as hard as you can. We can live with mistakes but we can't live with a lack of effort" was the basic point. I'm thinking they pay him north of $4mm per year for a reason. He's pretty good at his job.

And I'm just saying we aren't anywhere close to that point and thankfully Urban knows the worst thing in the world is to instill fear in his players of making a mistake. Go and find his comments on the matter. He has literally had the opposite approach as you have shared. Just saying.......

I agree with both you guys but there comes a point when if you continue to put the ball on the turf it's going to eventually cut into your potential touches. I don't think it will get to that point. With Dontre out, I look for Jalin to close out the regular season with two solid performances (and maybe a PR TD).

Jalin carries the ball pretty high and tight, so I am not too concerned about him fumbling once he has possession of the ball...the fumble at the goal line was a really good hit with the crown of the helmet on the ball (although I think he should have put two arms over it going into contact). His real issue is catching punts, which just takes tons of practice and focus.

Catching a punt has to be hard as all get out. Dude's barreling down on you trying to take your head off and you have to manage that while trying to decide whether to fair catch or not......think about that. And, even harder, realize that even if you know you won't return it there is a major incentive to actually catch the ball and waive a fair catch because if it goes over your head it can roll another 15+ yards which has a big impact on field position. Urban addressed this saying that he loves the fact that Jalin is aggressive about running down the ball to catch it even if he won't return the punt. Now, think about doing all that with dudes wanting to tattoo you at full speed. Yikes.

See my earlier post on punt/kick return difficulty. I don't even like returning a rugby ball kick. I've always driven coaches crazy because I insist on fielding on the one-hop. Can't even estimate the difficulty level of fielding/returning a good B1G punter's kick when it's fifteen degrees with gunners running at you.

But what if they were trading trinkets for those tats? Would it hurt less?

I don't buy everything they say carte blanche.
Look at the Samuel situation a few games ago. He fumbled, immediately pulled and only brought in at the very end of garbage time. Samuel has since got to start, but he had to earn his way back.
What's the difference between those two situations? We have depth at RB and the luxury of bringing in other players. With Wilson injured, it's pretty much just Jalin. I don't think the coaches trust Noah in crunch time yet. If they did, we probably would've seen the same treatment.

That said, I appreciate Jalin's efforts this week. But working under the assumption that time spent on Special Teams is time not spent on Offense... and again underlining that the pivot position just became rather shallow with Wilson's injury... I'd feel better if he was replaced by somebody like Warren Ball back there. Let Jalin, as a RS Freshman, focus on his primary role as the pivot and work on ball security there. Even w/o the mistakes, I grimace to think what happens if he gets injured by some gunners trying to take him out like the PSU kid punching Wilson, or more antics from scUM get him suspended from the CCG.
