Kyle Allen (QB Washington Redskins)

I like your enthuism towards allen, but, imo, when thinking of pure pocket qbs in the urban meyer offense i picture the john brantley fiasco. Maybe there was more to that story but I just try and picture going from an incredibly athletic qb to one who sits in the pocket and my fears of him not suiting this offense come up. Maybe and hopefully I'm wrong and I have no problem with that but like others I saw barker and Harris first and also hasn't Allen's arm been questioned? Still very early and a lot of time to prove me wrong. Interested in hearing your opinion on my flawed view

Don't mistake Allen for a statue. He's pretty mobile, he's just able to rely more on his arm. If we're comparing him to QB's Meyer has brought it, I'd say he's a lot more Alex Smith than he is Jon Brantley.

11W Recruiting Roundup: QB Quagmire Clearing Up

"I was pretty focused on the Buckeyes a year ago," Allen, who plans to graduate in December, said. "I wanted that offer pretty bad, but I think the wait (for the offer) is actually a good thing. I have gotten a chance to see a number of great schools around the country and I am looking at them all. It helped me do my homework and I've got a lot of great opportunities around the nation, but the Buckeyes are up at the top of my list. I will make sure to visit them again now."

Brantley's problem was more that he wasn't a good quarterback rather than not being a good fit for the UF scheme. I mean, as a senior under Muschamp's pro-style offense, he didn't exactly set the world on fire. Allen, if he chooses OSU, might end up being more like Chris Leak, who did great in Meyer's system after Meyer tweaked it to not have him run so much read option.

Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up. I wish Kyle the best and hope he makes it to cbus. He'll certainly have a number of weapons at his disposal, especially if his teammate commits as well. I guesa coaches saw more in allen then the 2 qbs us fans thought would get offers first.

Leak was a pro-style QB and worked out very well in UFM's offense for 2 years. Then you had basically 3 years of Tebow and the one year of Brantley was a catastrophe, but it was one year and I think Leak more than offsets that. Not to mention that Brantley turned out to be a bust anyways.

I haven't seen anyone questioning Allen's arm? Kid has a cannon and a quick release. Not sure how his REAL deep ball is but considering you attempt that type of pass 2-3 times a year, I'm not too worried...he makes all the throws as far as I am concerned. Plus I really don't see his athletic ability as being an issue here. On the other options you have Barker, who is a leader, fairly athletic, and is an above average thrower. Then you have Harris who is a fantastic athlete but a below average arm. Personally I'd much rather someone who can get the ball to multiple athletes/extend a play than a QB who can occasionally complete a pass but relies primarily on their legs for offense (what I think you get with Harris).

He'll also have the benefit of a power run game. Brantley didn't have that until this year.

I think this is our guy for 2014. Oh and the last QB we got from Arizona (my favorite OSU football player ever + inspired me to wear #7 my whole life) turned out ok

I'm nervous about having a pro-style QB switching from a pro-style offense in HS to a spread offense in college. That experiment doesn't always work. The fact that he's not a dangerous runner makes me a little more nervous because those QBs that are adept at tucking and running with it when need arises do well in an Urban Meyer offense.

I have faith in Herman and Urban though. If this kid is good enough to earn a scholarship offer, then I'm on board with him.

May want to read back a bit and see that UFM will tailor his offense to the available personnel...he isn't Rich Rodriguez. If Allen comes here you can bet that UFM will have an offense built for him...

I don't understand this. It's not like he's running i-formation. Most of his stuff is out of the shotgun. He even runs the read option. He's got a big arm but he's very mobile. Would you have worries about Aaron Rodgers coming here? Similar type of player.

That's a very good point. And after watching his film, though he doesn't run the ball, he has a very strong pocket pressence and like was stated earlier, is far from a statue. He has a very good arm as well. His current offense resembles osu's a lot which is also a big plus. I've always trusted the coaches, but just worried we'd go from an athlete that can do a lot with the ball in his hands to someone who'd be a sitting duck at times that can't do anything when the play broke down. I also like the fact of a possible package deal and landing andrews as well. Though it wouldnt technically be a "package deal" I'd really like both.

:smash:

As punishment they should make you watch reruns of the '06 title game. Maybe that will change your mind about pro-style QBs not working out under Urban.

Desert Mountain QB Kyle Allen may have new favorite after Ohio State offer

Scottsdale Desert Mountain 2014 quarterback Kyle Allen got a football scholarship offer from Notre Dame on Monday, then picked up maybe the biggest offer to date on Wednesday — from Ohio State.

Coach Tony Tabor said he spoke with Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who made the offer.

“He said he watched film on him 30 different times,” Tabor said. “They don’t just pull the trigger.”

Ohio State and Notre Dame already has offered Allen’s top target, 6-foot-6, 238-pound wide receiver Mark Andrews, the Big Schools Football Player of the Year last season.

“They’re coming back hard on Mark, too,” Tabor said.

Before this week, it seemed like Allen, who has gotten taller and filled out more at 6-3, 200, was favoring Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and UCLA. Arizona State will do an all-out pursuit to try to get Allen to commit.

But these recent offers change everything — especially the Ohio State offer.

This is only the second quarterback in the 2014 class to get an Ohio State offer.

Allen, who attended Ohio State’s camp last summer, tweeted out after the offer that he feels blessed.

Allen said Tuesday he was excited about the Notre Dame offer, adding that “Mark is high on them.”

Ohio State could be hard to beat. Meyer is very selective on offering quarterbacks. When Ohio State came through last spring, Tabor said he was told that they will come back this year depending on his progress.

Ohio State offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Tom Herman came through Tuesday to see Allen’s workout.

Allen told me Tuesday that he wanted to narrow it down to four or five schools at the end of spring football.

“Not that anybody else’s offer is not prestigious,” Tabor said, “but that might be the biggest one. I mean, he’s produced Heisman Trophy winner.”

“They’re big time,” Tabor said. “They do big-time things. The only other quarterback offer was to a kid in Georgia. It’s not like they throw offers out to anybody.

“I think he’ll make his decision by late July and just play football.”
