The design represents their state flag.

I don't know what the history is that promulgated the design, but the people in Maryland are probably very proud of it. My guess is Delaney wouldn't even consider touching that issue.

:osu:

I lived in Maryland, and the red and white portion is the flag used by the Marylanders who favored joining the confederacy. The flag basically consists of two family banners used by the Calvert family. But who gives a shit? Nobody I knew in MD.

I'll say it again. Maryland? Meh. Rutgers? Errm....

I really like our 12 teams right now. Nebraska IMO has added culture to our conference. I don't think the same would be true for Maryland and Rutgers. They just don't seem like B1G teams to me.

Maybe I'm just a whiny change-hating baby but...

I don't know, Rutgers has a ton of history. Shitty history, but history none the less...

Yea, no...terrible choices...

There are plenty of reasons to be less than enthusiastic about these possible moves, and in his skepticism Stewart Mandel manages to identify none of them. Geographically nonsensical? These schools are in states that are contiguous to the B1G footprint. It's a step down in competition and prestige for Maryland basketball? I know that isn't his beat, but the B1G is king in men's basketball right now, and there's also this thing called the B1G-ACC Challenge where I'm sure they'll find a way to get Maryland together with some of those traditional foes.

You know this shouldn't happen when even the fans of Maryland and Rutgers don't want it to go through.

And how many Rutgers/Maryland fans can you name? Does anyone know any? Does anyone know anyone who knows one?

I really hope this doesn't happen.

My best friend just graduated from Maryland and I know a grad student in Alabama who went to Rutgers.

I don't think either know what conferences the schools are in right now.

That isn't any worse than Wetzel's column that talks about Maryland not fitting in with the 'rural' Big Ten schools. Chicago, Detroit, Minn-St Paul, Columbus...Even Madison & Lincoln are up over 200k.

I took classes at UMD when I lived in the area and know quite a few alums. From what I've seen (not msg board trolls) UMD fans are probably 60-40 against the idea.

Rutgers fans have had wet dreams of B1G membership for years. If you believe they're against the move you've been smoking crank.

Now go beat PSU and then get back in your cage.

"Good" in basketball? Depends on what your definition of good is. They're certainly not a nationally prominent program. I don't blame him on that.

The academic part is a little more unforgivable.
