New Jersey is loaded with talent, but we (and most Big Ten teams) have no problems recruiting there. Gaining a foothold in Maryland, and in the deeper South with GT would be a huge boon to recruiting. Maybe not so much for us or scUM but for the rest of the conference.

And if we plan to return to top dog (or, at least, parity) among the big conferences, the rest of us need to start recruiting better. Nebraska not finishing with a top 10 to top 15 class each year is criminal. Wisconsin and MSU should at least be able to break the top 25. Adding GT and Maryland would only help. Look for those teams to target VA, NC and even SEC states.
I know Wisconsin does a TON of recruiting in NJ/the East Coast in general, so adding somebody like Rutgers can only help. I can't speak on behalf of MSU but obviously PSU does a lot of work out there too.

That's exactly my point. We're doing fine there already. Adding Rutgers won't help a lick. Adding coastal schools, the tobacco belt, and GT gives us a presence in those currently underexploited areas. Adding Rutgers might strengthen recruiting marginally in that area, but there's a limited pool of talent in NE and we already seem to get the lion's share. Whereas we could instead lock down the mid Atlantic, which has much more potential.

And to be frank, Wiscy, Penn State, Mich State, and the other conference members need all the help they can get on the recruiting front. The BIG is usually below the ACC even for conference recruiting rankings.

It's all about the $$$$ and being in the NYC markets

To be frank, no one in NYC or Jersey even gives a [Mark May] about Rutgers or college football. Speaking from personal experience. It's possible that adding Rutgers to the Big Ten would change this, but I'm not hopeful. I guess we'll see.

This would be my concern too. I'm not sure what name recognition Rutgers carries in NYC.

doesn't matter, it's about being in those tv sets, don't matter if they actually watch the game or not

Adding GT would not be about viewership or TV rights. It would be about the research, academic and recruiting advantages they present. Academics between GT and Rutgers is a wash, but GT has the advantage in the other 2 categories.
Research at GT is hardly a reason to add them. Adding an afterthought athletic program in Georgia isn't going to make Georgia kids any more likely to play in the Big Ten, and even if it did, that's hardly a reason to add them either.

I'd like to add UVA and Maryland. Rutgers is underwhelming and GT makes no sense.

This. There is actual smoke regarding the Maryland move. Reporters are quoting people connected with the University (off the record of course).

The only real noise regarding Rutgers is 1) from their fans & 2) assumptions based on common wisdom.

Regarding the popularity of Rutgers...while it is nowhere near the interest in a place like Columbus, Rutgers games do dominate the 'most viewed' list when it comes to TV ratings in the area. Even leaving out the rest of NYC, New Jersey's population is pushing 9 Million.

I would much prefer UVA to both Rutgers and GT, but I was responding to a post on Rutgers vs GT.
