Not so sure the Terriers would be good for the football side of things...

I agree, but this expansion is not about bringing the best football universities. It is about expanding the B1G footprint and the market for the B1G Network. Boston U is in the same pack football wise as Maryland and Rutgers. No one is expecting those three schools to compete for the B1G title they way they were when Nebraska joined.

No, they're not. Boston U. =/= Boston College. Boston U. has a club football team. Click the link I put in my last post.

"This guys dead. Well cross him off." My fault. That leaves UNC and Virginia.

I think UNC and Virginia would be great all-around additions that I like more than just about any other "available" options out there.

I'm undecided about the FSU move. FSU/Miami or FSU/GT would be a home run for the BTN and TV contracts, but otherwise don't fit nearly as well.

I think ol' JD's plan is for the B1G universities to make twice what any other conference's teams are within let's say...20 yrs. You gotta believe that if that happens, not many other teams in the country will be able to keep up with Northwestern's facility upgrades and Head Coach and assistant salaries. All it will take is for the B1G schools to invest back into their programs. I'd be willing to bet Maryland and Rutgers will do so. Not sure about Indiana.

FSU is not a AAU member, Nebraska was at the time they joined.

The "rumor" that was floated by Beaux Bishop on the radio in Columbus is that FSU is applying for AAU membership and has contacted the B1G about conference membership.....this is, like Texas, being pushed by the academic wing while the athletic side wants big 12

thats the rumor

FWIW, here's a comparison of the prospective schools in regards to academics/university/FB rankings:

USNWR Top College Rankings:

Virginia - #24
UNC - #30
Boston College - #31
Georgia Tech - #36
Maryland - #58
Rutgers - #68
Va. Tech - #72
Florida State - #97
Nebraska - #101

Student Size:

Rutgers - 57,000
Florida State - 42,000
Maryland - 38,000
Va. Tech - 31,000
UNC - 29,000
Nebraska - 26,000
Virginia - 21,000
Georgia Tech - 20,000
Boston College - 15,000

Endowment:

Virginia - $5,240M
UNC - $2,220M
Boston College - $1,900M
Georgia Tech - $1,262M
Nebraska - $1,240M
Maryland - $792M
Rutgers -$700M
Va. Tech - $600M
Florida State - $525M

Stadium Size:

Florida State - 82,000
Nebraska - 81,000
Va. Tech - 66,000
UNC - 63,000
Georgia Tech - 55,000
Virginia - 54,000
Maryland - 54,000
Rutgers - 52,000
Boston College - 44,500

Football W/L Record for Past 30yrs:

Nebraska - 78%
Florida State - 75%
Va. Tech - 68%
Boston College - 57%
Virginia - 56%
Georgia Tech - 55%
UNC - 52%
Maryland - 49%
Rutgers - 43%

Assuming these things were evenly weighted, you'd get:

#1 - UNC, Virginia
#2 - Florida State
#3 - Nebraska
#4 - Virginia Tech
#5 - Georgia Tech
#6 - Boston College
#7 - Maryland
#8 - Rutgers

The other two metrics I didn't add were TV sets (or population within a set distance from the university), and basketball record by # of tourney appearances or another such metric (say sweet sixteens).

From the list, UNC and Virgina are well above everyone else, placing the 4th on average. Of course, it also shows that Maryland and Rutgers were the two worst to go after, which suggests media markets probably play a very large part of the argument. If that's the case, then you'd think that metro areas that are pulled by Georgia Tech and Virginia are very important.
