Big Ten Conference Divisions

I think we'll see the "Whine and Cheese Division" headed by Michigan and Wisconsin, and the "Buckeyes and their Bitches Division" headed by Ohio State.

Who gives a shit how the rest of the schools are divvied up.

Ummmmm... I do. I'd prefer to have access to NJ and MD. The western states other than Illinois offer very little to us in terms of recruits, prospective enrollees in the university, and a greater national audience.

You make some excellent points that, unfortunately, detracted from my earlier droll commentary. So I wish you a crappy day, sir.

ESPN Big Ten Blog

J.J. from Myrtle Beach, S.C., writes: Brian, as an Ohio State fan I would like to see OSU and Michigan in the same division when the B1G realigns, and we have heard rumors of that. With those rumors come the typical reasons for and against the change, like a possible rematch a week later vs. breaking tradition and moving The Game to October. Surprisingly, what has not been mentioned is the fact that moving OSU/UM into the same division would increase the B1G's chances of getting both into the new BCS format in 2014. It seems that the original rational for splitting them in opposite divisions (having the two premier programs play in the conference championship game, thus garnering national attention) is now obsolete and should be modified. Keeping them in different divisions all but eliminates the possibility of both playing in the new playoff. Thoughts?

Brian Bennett: I'm totally in favor of putting Michigan and Ohio State in the same division. That would make The Game potentially even more exciting, with a division title possibly on the line in the final week of the year, and it would eliminate the unsavory prospect of a rematch a week later. Rivals like Alabama and Auburn and USC and UCLA play in the same division for a reason. It's been shown that teams who lose in their conference championship games have a hard time making the BCS. Just look at Georgia, which came a play away from beating Alabama in the SEC title game yet dropped to the Capital One Bowl, while SEC East runner-up Florida went to the Sugar Bowl. Same for Michigan in 2011, while Big Ten runner-up Michigan State missed out. We'll have to see whether that has the same impact for the four-team playoff, since winning a conference title is supposed to be emphasized in the selection process. Right now, it's tough to see how the Big Ten could get two in the four-team playoff, though it probably would have happened in the 2006 season with Michigan and Ohio State. Had they played twice, maybe not.

That is an interesting take that I haven't seen anyone really spend much time discussing ie that Ohio State + TSUN in the same division would actually help both (assuming they finish 1 - 2) in post season berths.

Big Ten to reconsider division names

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said his league will consider replacing the Legends and Leaders division names in 2014.

A decision could be made by June.

"It's on the table," Delany said.

In 2014, Maryland and Rutgers are scheduled to join the Big Ten. The league must decide what divisions the Terrapins and Scarlet Knights will join and if it will have any current teams change divisions.

The Legends Division consists of Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern; the Leaders Division is Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

When deciding on division names in December 2010, Delany said the Big Ten "didn't have great options."

"We weren't going to go with 'Bo or Woody,' 'Black or Blue,' or 'Plains or Lakes,' " Delany said. "Obviously we got some acceptance [with Legends and Leaders], but not as much as we would have liked."

Delany said he was a "little surprised" by the backlash when the division names were announced.

"I'm not sure it was a national survey [of people who didn't like the names], but people who hit the 'send' button," Delany said. "I don't take umbrage to negative reaction. I don't necessarily change when I hear it. I think on the other hand, we said we would test-market it, and we have for a couple of years. We have the opportunity to look at it again. I'm sure we will. Whether or not we change or not is to be determined. I don't have any presumption that we'll change on it, but that doesn't mean we're not looking at it.

"I don't think when you try to build something, lead some organization, you don't want to be tone deaf. But it's not up for vote every week."

.../cont/...
Now if we can just get rid of all the damn double headed award names.

Bull[Mark May]...you got zero acceptance. And what the fuck is so bad about "Plains" and "Lakes" divisions? At least they make sense...

I just got a radical thought... how about East and West! Then, Ohio State could be in the same division as Michigan and THE GAME could actually mean something with regards to a division championship...

Plus, the geography grouping would make it easier to remember who is in which division. For the last 2 years, I've had to say "M, N, and Iowa in one division and everyone else in the other".

Only downside is we'd obviously just be copying the SEC, and the last thing we want to be is SEC wannabes. Who in their right mind would copy a conference as crappy as the SEC? Blech.

That would leave you with the majority of the big media markets, recruiting grounds & high profile teams (Ohio State, TSUN, PSU) in the east. Essentially you would create a B1G West with the same inherent disadvantages of the old Big XII North.

BTW Regardless of how exactly how the schools are split my preference is still for one division to be named "Western" (not West) to honor the original name of the conference.

With eastward expansion they'll probably have to go geographic or choose names that would be somewhat inclusive of Maryland and Rutgers.

Delany will probably eff it up and call them 'Dirt' and 'H20' divisions.
