Brian "Body Kount" Kelly (HC Louisiana State)

I think this guy is a total asshole, always picking up a fight with somebody on the sidelines. It is a good thing if he is going to ND, I wouldn't want a likable guy there. I always disliked RichRod as well; I was glad when UM replaced Lloyd Carr with him.

While I understand this point of view, my hatred for ND has no bounds. The arrogance that comes with ND has no equal.

To put it another way, 20 years from now my son could be named head coach at ND and I would still hate ND. The only thing that would change is I would no longer cheer for the meteor when ND plays scUM.

He should definitely leave.

He went undefeated (in a BCS conference), and barely got a sniff as to the chance at a championship game.

That's like doing the best possible job you can, and not getting a chance at the big goal. No way Notre Dame goes undefeated and left out of the title game. No way.

what year did Auburn go unbeaten and not sniff the national title? was that in the BCS era?

what about BCS schools like USC who have only one loss and still don't play in the BCS title game?

Kelly will go to ND...but it won't be for this reason.

Yes, there was...I just couldn't remember the year. But they finished 3rd in the BCS, too...and that was my point. It does happen at places other than UC.

Can it happen at places other than UC? Sure. But probably not at ND. Certainly it's not as likely to happen at ND than at UC. I could, therefore, see him leaving for that reason.

I agree. What was he doing yelling at the kicker. He asked if the kicker could make the 55 yard field goal in bad weather. The kicker, not wanting to say he is not good enough to make it and also to have that can do attitude, says he could make it. Kelly sends him out there and he misses the kick. I think it is Kelly's job to know what his kicker's range is. I think Kelly should know that the kicker might not be able to plant his foot as well on the wet field and the odds of making that would be slim. Don't yell at the kid if he misses it. Someone should yell at him for making a bad coaching decision.

The problem is the UC fans like that sort of attitude and behavior in their sports coaches. UC football fans have their Bob Huggins for now.

That was actually the 2004 season and 2004 final BCS standings, for the January, 2005 BCS Title game (USC stomped Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl).

if they win...does it matter?

Some people like pure intensity. It shows competitivness. And the people who like that type of coach aren't relegated to just living in Cincinnati or being UC fans.

I'm not going to go down a list of coaches like this to make the point but I do recall that Herb Brooks was like this and, while I don't recall him fighting with his players during a game, I belive Woody was like this, too.

The difference is that Huggins (and it appears Kelly is more like him than not) was not just intense, but also a major scumbag.

I live in the same town that Huggins lived in when he coached at UC, and fwiw, the same town Matta lived in when he coached at Xavier. There are countless stories of how Huggins was a jackass, and I have seen some of these instances with my own eyes. Matta, on the other hand, was seen as a great guy, and many of my classmates babysat his kids and absolutely loved him. I have never met someone who actually knows Huggins and likes him.

Kelly appears to be in the same boat.

I agree Huggins came off as an asshole...but I have not read or heard of any such criticsm of Kelly. Huggins was a drunk and, from what I heard, sleeping around with some pretty big booster's wife (**cough** Jeff Wyler**cough)...
Kelly is the opposite from all indications. Good family man, devoted to his wife and children and a good Catholic...I just do not see the comparrison between Thuggins and Brian Kelly and if you have information to share to say otherwise, please share...

An overweight, arrogant asshole who is bad with the media, thinks he can just outscore everybody and gives little thought to playing defense. You can't make a living long-term winning games 47-45 and 45-44. When your defense sucks, it catches up with you (which it will in the Sugar Bowl).

Sounds like Charlie Weis all over again. ND can have him.
