C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

Greg Oden Will Not Only Play in an NBA Game, He Will Record a Double-Double

I realize that I'm running the risk of jinxing him by predicting this, but at this point, Greg Oden's entire professional career has been one big jinx, so this would really just be a drop of water in the ocean. With that said, I'm predicting that during 2013, Greg Oden will record a double-double in an NBA game. Chances are you think this is a ridiculous idea because you either (a) think predicting that a guy who was the no. 1 pick in the NBA draft five years ago will get a double-double isn't exactly ballsy, or (b) think there's no chance in hell of this happening.

If you're in the former group, this seems like a good time to remind you that when the 2013-14 season rolls around and Oden is (hopefully) set to make yet another comeback, it will have been almost four full years since he last played in the league. The odds of him making it through a month, let alone an entire season, without getting hurt are so astronomically against him that many people think he should just retire now and not even bother trying. Which brings me to those of you in the second group. I know that Oden is trying to make an unprecedented comeback, and suggesting he can produce at a high level even for one game is borderline insane. But I'm sticking by my prediction because I've seen firsthand how motivated he is to salvage his career. And by that, I mean that he's lost almost 30 pounds during his time off and is moving better than I've ever seen him move since he left Ohio State. Hopefully shedding weight will relieve some stress on his fragile body, and for at least one night in 2013 ? probably against the Wizards ? he'll tap into the fountain of youth and show why he was once considered the best big-man prospect since Lew Alcindor.

Sources: Greg Oden plans to return
Updated: January 10, 2013
By Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein | ESPN.com

Nearly a year removed from his latest knee surgery, former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden has decided to resume his playing career, but is not planning to return to the NBA before the 2013-14 season, according to sources close to the situation.

Sources told ESPN.com that multiple teams already have expressed interest in signing Oden before the end of this season to a multiyear deal that would allow him to continue his rehab until he can get back on the court in training camp in the fall.

The Miami Heat are at the front of the line in pursuing Oden, two sources said, and have been keeping tabs as he recovers while also taking classes at Ohio State.

Greg Oden, a former No. 1 overall pick of the Portland Trail Blazers who has had his career derailed by knee injuries, has decided to make a return to the court, according to sources.

The Heat potentially could have two roster spots available this season, one of which Oden, formerly of the Portland Trail Blazers, could slide into as he continues to rehab. Team president Pat Riley is known to like gambling on long shots, especially when it comes to big men.

One concern for the Heat, though, is they already are committed to more than $80 million in salaries for next season and likely will have a final payroll coming close to $90 million in a year when the new, more harsh luxury tax kicks in. Oden potentially would be a costly gamble even on a minimum-level contract. The Heat are also currently about $14 million over the luxury-tax line for this season.

Oden's agent squashes Heat speculation

Former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden may yet return to the NBA. The agent for [Oden] said Thursday he's "100 percent" certain his often-injured client will be back playing in the NBA next season. But he said rumors of Oden ending up with the <A href="http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4554" target=_blank sab="393">Miami Heat this season in order to rehab are "extreme." With Miami playing at Portland on Thursday, there has been speculation the Heat, who can open up a roster spot, could soon sign [Oden]. He then would be under the care of their doctors while preparing to play for next season. Mike Conley, the agent for Oden, said in a phone interview with FOX Sports Florida it is an option Oden could sign with an NBA team this season for rehab purposes. But he said he has heard nothing from the Heat since Oden was waived.

Mavericks showing interest in Greg Oden

Greg Oden made it clear earlier this season that he would not allow his chronic knee issues put an early stop to his NBA career. He has recently been linked with the Miami Heat, but it now seems that the Dallas Mavericks might want to take a gamble on the 24-year-old 7-footer. Oden has recently been working his way back into shape, recovering from microfracture surgery, and wants to have a shot at some NBA action next season. According to an ESPN report, the Dallas Mavericks have been in touch with Oden's agent about possibly making a multi-year offer to the former No. 1 overall pick. The Mavs are not the only team that are rumored to be interested in making a long-term commitment to a center who has had several microfracture surgeries on his knees. Some teams are even willing to sign Oden this season, in order to allow him to rehab under the supervision of the franchise's medical staff.

Celtics monitoring Greg Oden
Updated: January 17, 2013
By Greg Payne | ESPNBoston.com

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge confirmed Thursday during his weekly appearance on Boston sports radio WEEI that the team is "monitoring" former Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden, but haven't made an attempt to sign the 7-footer.

A report from CBS Sports on Thursday listed the Celtics as one of several teams interested in Oden, a 24-year-old who's already undergone three microfracture surgeries during his NBA career.

"Yeah, so we're monitoring Greg, like all the NBA teams are, but we have not attempted to sign him," Ainge said Thursday. "But we are monitoring him and having (conversations) with his people just to see where he's at."

Oden hasn't played in an NBA game since December 2009, and reportedly wouldn't return until the 2013-14 season.

"I don't think (he'd be ready to play this year)," Ainge said. "I don't know any of that for sure, but I would suspect that anybody that would sign him would have their eyes looking more towards his contribution in the future than now."

Ainge said that in the brief time Oden did play in the NBA -- a total of 82 games -- he showed flashes of the talent that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft.

"I think that there's been stretches, very few stretches, where he's played excellent ball," Ainge said. "He's been a terrific defender and a fantastic offensive rebounder and just a real big, strong presence on the inside. I think that he's been that."

Despite Oden's significant injury history, Ainge said he expects there to be competition for his services.

"Yeah, I think that there will be competition and that everybody is looking to roll the dice and take a chance on a big guy," Ainge said. "So, yeah, there's definitely competition."

According to sources, the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks also are known to have interest in Oden.

In 82 career games with the Blazers, Oden averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 22.1 minutes per game.

Greg Oden May Sign Within One Month
By HOOPSWORLD

Greg Oden is talking comeback, and interest around the NBA is sky high. That in itself is news, considering Oden hasn?t played in more than two years.

So forget the three microfracture knee surgeries for now. Plenty of teams are lining up to take a crack at the 7-footer. The short list reportedly includes Boston, Miami, Cleveland and Dallas.

Oden?s camp is hoping to come to terms with a team sometime around the All-Star break in mid-February, or just after the Feb. 21 trading deadline.

NBA Report: Oden signing drawing near

January 20, 2013

Greg Oden is talking comeback, and interest around the NBA is sky high. That in itself is news, considering Oden hasn't played in more than two years.

But we're talking about the former No. 1 overall pick and a guy who doesn't turn 25 until later this month, not to mention a man who collected 20 rebounds in his final NBA game (Dec. 1, 2009 vs. Miami).

So forget the three microfracture knee surgeries for now. Plenty of teams are lining up to take a crack at the 7-footer. The short list reportedly includes Boston, Miami, Cleveland and Dallas.

Oden's agent, Mike Conley, has insisted that Oden is 100 percent and a future All-Star. Oden is currently taking classes at Ohio State, and while he's expected to sign with a team this season, it'd be for continued rehabilitation purposes only. He plans to actually play games next season. And with the way things are going, he will indeed be back in the league.

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has admitted to keeping close tabs on Oden.

"We're monitoring Greg, like all NBA teams are, but we have not attempted to sign him," Ainge told WEEI radio in Boston. "But we are monitoring him and having (conversations) with his people just to see where he is."

Ainge also confirmed that the interest in Oden is far and wide.

"Everybody is looking to roll the dice and take a chance on a big guy," Ainge said. "So, yeah, there's definitely competition."

Portland made Oden the top pick in the 2007 draft. He compiled averages of 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in 82 total games.

Oden's camp is hoping to come to terms with a team sometime around the All-Star break in mid-February, or just after the Feb. 21 trading deadline.

Come on Cavs, keep the big guy in Ohio. Jersey sales alone would go way up to offset his salary some. Totally worth the risk in my opinion.

i would love to see oden come to the cavs but for the better of his career i suggest he goes anywhere but Minnesota or Cleveland because of how often people on those 2 teams get injured...San Antonio can also be considered i guess...if oden comes to the cavs we should hand him a protective facemask when he signs the contract

Oden to Cavs please. Just dropped Jones to the D league so now the only big guys we got are Tristan & Zeller. Something is up, hopefully it's us signing Oden

i was pretty sure i read oden wasnt coming back this year...so even if we sign him i didnt think he was going to contribute this year...we will probably bring Leur up or something

Until they can't pay for it after next year.

it depends on what oden is really looking for. cleveland could give him more money. miami can give him the minimum due to their cap woes. being that this may be his last stop should he get hurt again, one more payday might be appealing.

the cleveland clinic is right down the road, and he's a stones throw from home. he'd also have a bit of a hometown hero thing coming back to the buckeye state.

miami might be a better short term option for one year, from a strictly winning perspective, assuming everyone stays healthy, none of the old guys have any sort of decline in play as they have this year.
