CB Gareon Conley (D.C. Defenders)

Conley is going to state after placing third in the 400 meters. That finish is even more impressive when one considers Conley mostly focused on the shorter dashes during most of the spring. He?s still figuring out how to run a 400.

?I started out faster today and ended up slower. I just have to get my strategy right,? Conley said. ?I?ve only ran it five times. I just ran it one time and I was good at it, so my coach thought we?d try to get out in it.

?I didn?t know what the outcome would be when I started, but I definitely wanted to make to state.?

Massillon seniors Damion Smith (left) and Gareon Conley will represent the Tigers at this week?s state track and field championships in Columbus. Smith qualified in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 6 inches at last week?s regional at Austintown. Conley will compete in the 400-meter dash after finishing third at Austintown with a time of 50.04.

Smith?s teammate, senior Gareon Conley, certainly isn?t lacking for natural ability. The wideout-cornerback is headed to Ohio State for football and he was a stalwart in the shorter dashes for Massillon this track season.

However, the fact Conley will join Smith at Ohio State University for this week?s State Track and Field Championships, running the 400-meter dash to boot, does qualify as a bit of a shock.

?To be honest, I knew he could run the 400 because we do it as part of our practices, but the way we discovered he was a 400 runner was a completely by accident,? Scott said of Conley, who finished third in the regional finals last week at Fitch in 50.04. ?We had someone who couldn?t run and Gareon volunteered for the 400. It was a sprint medley we were competing in at New Philadelphia and Gareon wanted to run the 400. When I timed him I was blown away.

?He broke 50 in the prelims last week and that was his fourth time running the event. He?s come really quickly and breaking 50 that quickly was sort of a surprise ... he basically learned the race within a month.?

Scott said he clocked Conley at 51.5 for that first quarter-mile in New Philadelphia. Conley has continued to impress, as he broke 50 seconds in the regional semifinals last week, running a 49.98.

Scott chalked up Conley?s slower finals time to still being a 400 neophyte. The race that is often described as track?s toughest punishes those who can?t find the proper pace.

?We were trying to determine how he should attack the first curve,? Scott said. ?Should he come out strong or should try to pace himself and turn it on later? We kind of pushed him into turning it up a little on Friday and he kind of ran out of gas at the end.

?We made an adjustment for Friday?s final and it didn?t work so well. We learned from that and we?re going to start applying the prelim technique (from last week) for the state meet.?

I am sure all the true frosh corners are going to get reps w/ the ones throughout fall camp due to the uncertainty of the Roby situation. Coaches need to see how they perform in pads under pressure now so they can separate the contenders from the pretenders and see if any of them can contribute week 1 of the season if they are needed. This doesn't surprise me @ all right now being that we are still 3 weeks away. It would surprise me a little if he is our week 1 starting corner.

When this guy was being recruited I thought I remembered it being discussed that he was a possible WR candidate as well as CB. Not picking on his play this year but would a position switch be possible for this young man? Eli Apple isn't going anywhere but up and I see one of Damon Webb/Lattimore locking down the other spot in 2015, probably Webb. I know we lack depth in the secondary but just wondering if WR would match his skill set better? Definitely not a large enough sample size to pass judgement on the young man but just wondering.

**Edit: this was not meant as an indictment on Gareon as a CB

GAREON CONLEY CONTINUES TO DRAW RAVE REVIEWS FROM OHIO STATE CONTINGENTS

Joshua Perry didn't hesitate.

Perry hardly — if ever — fouls up his words, regardless the topic. One of the most well-spoken and smartest players on Ohio State's football team, Perry was a no-brainer to speak at the Big Ten Media Days Luncheon Friday.

A day earlier, though, he was prompted with a question about young players on his defensive unit who could undergo a breakout season this fall, the year the Buckeyes hope to defend their 2014 national championship.

"The one name that people are a little bit iffy on is Gareon Conley, because he didn't play a ton last year and people got the impression about him," Perry said. "But that kid, the way he's worked this summer and some of the things he's been through in his development right now is huge."

That "impression" Perry spoke of stemmed from Ohio State's Nov. 8 tilt at Michigan State from this past season. That bout was one the Buckeyes eventually won 49-37 in East Lansing, Mich., to all but punch their ticket to the Big Ten Championship Game.

Ohio State played outstanding football that day, but Conley had a night to forget.

Starting in place of an injured Eli Apple, Conley got burnt on Michigan State's first drive by Spartan quarterback Connor Cook for a 44-yard completion. Then, Conley failed on a tackle attempt of Keith Mumphery, who ran right through him and scored a touchdown.

With the Past Behind Him, Gareon Conley is Ready to be a Starting Buckeye Cornerback

ConleyAppleWarmUp.jpg

It’s a question that gets asked every year in college football: how does a program replace departed talent and maintain success?

Ohio State is fortunate. The defending national champions don’t have many holes in their depth chart, as the Buckeyes were a rather young team in 2014. But one gap that must be filled is at cornerback after the departure of Doran Grant.

“The loss of Doran is huge,” redshirt sophomore cornerback Eli Apple said this week during Fall Camp. “I mean you lose a leader, you lose a guy that’s had great experience and a great locker room guy, a great veteran. So I mean it’s just up to us as a secondary to find somebody who can replace him.”

Grant was a two-year starter and was voted a captain by his teammates his senior year. He was named First Team All-Big Ten in 2014 after finishing second on the team and sixth in the conference with five interceptions.

Apple, who started 14 games a year ago and finished in the top 10 in tackles for the Scarlet and Gray, will move to Grant’s position. But the Buckeyes need someone to fill Apple’s shoes and that responsibility will fall to Gareon Conley.

“Corner, it's Gareon and Eli are the starting corners,” head coach Urban Meyer announced at Ohio State’s Media Day.
