Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

This is the big question. If Haslam is willing to give a coach a 5 year 10 mil a year contract all bets are off. I doubt this will be the case.

I think that's a little excessive.....the highest paid coaches in the NFL are now Bill B and Payton, both pull in about 7.5 mill per; paying any coach more than that would be insane, whether it be Gruden, Saban, etc.

I'm guessing I'm in the minority but if we don't land a proven HC (college or NFL), I'd much rather see the Browns go in the direction of a ST's coach than a DC/OC. Play calling ability as a HC, for the most part, isn't a required task, and if it is those coaches usually fail. The "growth"/"less suckiness" displayed by Shurmer this year was mostly, IMO, due to relinquishing more to his coordinators, especially now having Chilly on board. I look at what Harbaugh did at Baltimore as a relative unknown as a ST coach and saw him orchestrate a staff beautifully.

One guy who has gotten tread in the past has been Dave Toub, ST coach with the Bears. If we can't land one of the "big ones", I'd really like to see Toub.

Anyways, thoughts on today's game?

Sweep the Steelers or Higher Draft Pick?

Anyone who wouldn't rather sweep the Squealers needs their head examined. The value of a higher draft pick is lost on the Browns anyway.

Occasional meaningless progress is the lifeblood of this organization.

Some rumored candidates...

According to the report, some of the coaches being looked at to replace Shurmur are Oregon head coach Chip Kelly and several NFL offensive coordinators to include the New England Patriots? Josh McDaniels, the San Francisco 49ers? Greg Roman and the Indianapolis Colts? Bruce Arians.

I've read a couple of other articles (can't remember where now) that mention Burt O'Billhog as a possible candidate. Not real crazy about any of the folks mentioned above, my favorite would probably be Roman, but, after watching O'Blutarsky this year, I wouldn't be totally opposed to it. Even I was impressed with how he held ped aggy together.

Mary Kay's list of potential GM's

PITTSBURGH -- With the Browns set to fire coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert by Monday, here's a short list of some GM candidates the Browns are likeley to interview: the Falcons' David Caldwell, the Bills' Doug Whaley, the Chiefs' Ray Farmer, the Cardinals' Steve Keim and Jason Licht, and the Seahawks' John Idzik.

Kansas City GM:bonk: Scott Pioli might also be let go, and he'd be an intriguing prospect for the Browns. He loved his Cleveland days, and interviewed here with Randy Lerner for the president's pos.

Former Browns personnel executive and current NFL Network analyst Mike Lombardi is also on the radar.
Heckert is expected to be hired soon by a team with a GM opening. There could be a dozen or more openings.

In other Browns news, the team has hired Brent Stehlik as executive vice president/chief revenue officer, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He's a Cleveland native and Mount Union grad.

Chip Kelly has been stated that he would adapt an offense to whatever personnel that he would have, with that said I don't really like going to the college ranks to find your head coach but he would be better than a few names I have heard.

I totally agree with that and I am not sure that his "system" would even work in the NFL. I would not mind us getting Roman from the 49ers or even the OC from Atlanta and I don't want Lombardi as my GM.
Dirk Koetter? Pass. He was a washout as a HC in college. I think he's better suited staying as an OC.

Kelly has never run anything resembling a pro-style system.

QB's that can beat you with their arm and run a 4.5 in the NFL don't come around often. (RGThrice) Geno Smith sure as shit won't beat you with his legs. So he's going to have to go against everything he's ever known offensively to 'tailor' his scheme. I doubt that happens in his first go -around as a coach.

As for GM candidates. There is zero reason to get rid of Heckert other than wanting "Your guy". Hell, Tom might be the most qualified and successful candidate.

Caldwell is interesting. Pass on Pioli - no need for 2 rounds of failure. I don't want anyone currently associated with the Bills or Chiefs. Especially since Buffalo thought Mario Williams was a great investment. Likewise for KC bringing in Cassell. A big negatory on the Cardinals GM. Why would I want someone who was willing to trade for Kevin Kolb?

I'd be curious to hear more on Idzik.
