Gotta give credit where credit is due...not sure if Urban has had more of an impact on play calling or not, but assuming not, Herman did a great job in the Cinci game.

He avoided outsmarting himself - he stuck to the ground game and kept going back to the well since UC both failed to adjust and execute.
He utilized the TE - obviously having a healthy tandem of TE's helps, but the offense saw what a TE up the seam can do for the run game (and the OL thanks them for that)
He used more basic and "comfortable" in game adjustments to keep the defense guessing....changed tempo and bringing Jalin in at QB I thought were great wrinkles that were high reward, low risk.

Kudos on a very well called game.

What i really liked seeing was when they kept putting themselves behind the chains with false starts (too many!), it really didn't matter. They kept converting anyway. Get half of it back on the next snap and go from there. I thought they did a great job in that regard. Situational play calling was pretty darn good in my IMO.

OK... my favorite thing. Leaving out the last 2 possessions. (and even if you leave them in its not bad)... I think I remember about one actual negative play from scrimmage. When JT got sacked in the 2nd... Samuel might have had another or a no gain run... but... that's huge progress... there were only 2 jet sweeps that I remember and one trickeration reverse... but, none of this let's take all week to set up an option pitch and get stuffed for a loss... no run a WR screen that starts behind the LOS just because we have to get horizontal and miss a block for a loss... and only one (already mentioned) sack. The passes to the backs were with them headed up field.. the passes (except in one case that was pretty dangerous) to the and TE's on the outside were for positive yards then make a guy miss for more if you can. And when Cincy went double Eagle they got EZ the ball to the edge running downhill and let him look for the space, I wasn't even mad at Decker for that one hold trying to block it I was so happy to see it...

The false starts were frustrating but at least you don't lose both yardage and the down doing it. (Put the clap back in! I dunno, but get it fixed)

*Blanket disclaimer that Cincy's D was clearly in a Faygo induced coma, but I think its a huge step in the right direction.

Was it me or was there a lack of sweeps plays to Dontre/Jalin/Samual compared to normal? I thought those would work with PSU's sellout to the middle (as evidence by JTB's QB read keeps worked).

Again, could be off and I'd have to re-watch as my overall frustration could have clouded some things last night.

They actually ran several and I think only one of them actually did anything.

The play calling was a little conservative even in the first half, IMO. I don't think it really allowed JT to settle in throwing the rock. The second half INT really rattled JT, which is understandable.

I think the conservative play calling is a trend with Herman on the road. All that said though, Herman is a very young OC an a good one too.

Also seems to me that the offense was so run reliant b/c JT was having a lot of problems doing his adjustments etc. before the clock expired with all the noise.
That needs to be worked on imo. Somehow find a way to be more efficient with those calls and the offense will open up again.

Everyone is on their knees, ready to blow this guy whenever tOSU plays cupcakes and blows them out. When are we going to see a very well-coached game that isn't at home against bottom feeders? A fine coach, Tom Herman is; but I don't think he's on par with the rest of the coaching staff.

He is certainly on par but he is not as consistent. He also eliminates too much of the playbook due to what a defense has a reputation of doing. If we could run for 200+ on PSU that was giving up 60 yds on average then we should've been able to throw the ball with better results too because after all after a while they were specifically trying to clog the running lanes
