DB Adam Griffin (official thread)

Here to hopeing lightening strikes twice !!

There was another Ohio State great who was only 5'8" (maybe 5'9") and weighed only about 180lbs and he did amazing things on the field. Here's to wishing Adam a very fun and fruitful career while he is playing for Thee Ohio State Buckeyes. I can only imagine the cheers he will get when he runs out onto the field.

I love that he had full ride offers from other places and decided he wanted to go to Ohio State.

I love that he had full ride offers and loves Ohio State so much that he was going to forsake those offers to walk on and be a Buckeye.

I love that Coach Tressel gave him a scholarship.

This is just a beautiful story all the way around.

Welcome Adam!!!

With his tangibles alone, he will be a team asset. He'll go full bore on the field and on campus. A distinct, good pick. You just watch.

Griffin seems right at home

His father stood nearby, and his father's old number loomed above him.

Yet Adam Griffin yesterday seemed calm and unaffected at media day, the first time the youngest son of OSU icon Archie Griffin has been in Ohio Stadium as a member of the Buckeyes.

"It's definitely special," the freshman said. "I grew up around here, and knowing the traditions and stuff, it's really nice."

He knows the traditions, all right. And because he grew up around all things Buckeye, Adam is more accustomed to the surroundings and the attention that players receive.

Asked if he had any emotions, looking up at Archie''s No. 45 on the upper-deck facade, Adam said, "You kind of get adapted to it. I was here when they retired his jersey, so I've seen it here ever since."

A running back and cornerback at Columbus DeSales High School, Griffin (listed at 5-7, 178 on the OSU roster) is starting out as a cornerback.

He was the final member of the 2010 class,. He called coach Jim Tressel and asked to walk on after signing day had passed. Tressel gave him a scholarship.

"I'm just going to work hard and see where I fit in," Adam said.

Griffin and son Adam hold the famed No. 45 at his 1999 jersey retirement ceremony at Ohio Stadium.

Another of your sons, Adam, plays defensive back for the Buckeyes. Did he ever -- even as a joke -- tell you he was considering attending a different school?

He was considering going to the Air Force Academy, but he told his mom and myself that he's grown up a Buckeye, always wanted to be a Buckeye and that's where he wants to go to school. Having grown up here in Columbus and attending Ohio State football games and going to bowl games and things like that, you really learn to appreciate Ohio State and what Ohio State is all about. That's all he knew, and that's what he thought of college football. When he visited other places, it just wasn't the same. So when it came down to making that decision, it was Ohio State because that's what he knew and that's what he expected out of college football.

Ohio State football: Adam Griffin, son of Archie, is making an impact

COLUMBUS ? It wasn't a trick question.

Perhaps Adam Griffin was surprised at the answer to the query, "Who is the best special teams player in his family?"

Said the 5-foot-8, 180-pound sophomore at Ohio State, "Um, me?"

It's a pretty safe assumption Griffin's father didn't do the special teams coverages he does.

Adam Griffin's father ? two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin ? was too busy doing everything else.

In his first extensive action as a Buckeye, after two years of inactivity, Adam Griffin recorded two solo tackles on special teams during Ohio State's 56-10 win over Miami of Ohio on Saturday.

The T-shirt he said he was given by the coaching staff doesn't compare to the two Heismans his father won, but he will gladly take it.

"I think I've grown up tremendously the last few years not getting much playing time or whatever," Griffin said. "Now I finally get a chance to get on the field and contribute to the team."

Getting onto the field has been the problem for Griffin. After being offered a scholarship, a surprise to some, by former coach Jim Tressel, Griffin was redshirted two years ago and was a backup special teams player last year.

Needless to say, a backup special teams player doesn't get much playing time.

Griffin said he didn't "come here to sit around and do nothing" and voiced frustration about his inactivity during his first two seasons.

"I remember going home at night being mad at the world," he said.

?Young Arch? Can?t Run from Griffin Legacy
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? There was a confusing moment during interviews this week where Christian Bryant kept referring to Adam Griffin as ?Arch.?

He was talking about Griffin?s relationship with his family, and more specifically with his famous father ? the one and only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football history.

It would have been an easy mix-up for Bryant, given the nature of the conversation, only this wasn?t a mistake. Not even a little one.

?We call him ?Young Arch?,? Bryant quickly clarified.

?He came in our freshman year, we didn't really know what to expect. We just knew his dad was Archie Griffin.?

At 5-8 and 180 pounds, Griffin is an unassuming figure in almost every way, save for his last name. Few carry more clout in Columbus ? and really around the country when it comes to college football.

Buckeyes’ Adam Griffin comfortable following path set by famous father Archie Griffin
By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, September 6

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Adam Griffin knows what it is like to follow in the footsteps of an icon. He has had to adjust to carrying around the weight of a famous name his entire life.

It is something you have to learn from and adapt to when you are the son of the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, and perhaps the most revered Buckeye of them all, Archie Griffin.

“Probably my sophomore year in high school playing football, that’s the first time it ever hit me,” said Adam, a backup cornerback for 14th-ranked Ohio State.

Jamar Butler, a member of the Big Ten champion Buckeyes basketball team, came up to Adam that night — Adam’s first as a starter — and said, “You’re Archie Griffin’s son!”

It was the first time he realized that his family and his father were different, that he would have to live up to a lot while living a normal life.

Archie never made a big deal out of his college and NFL exploits at home. He didn’t even pressure Adam or his other two sons, Andre and Anthony, to play the sport — although he urged them to play a sport.

“The choice of what sport was theirs,” said Archie, the president and CEO of Ohio State’s massive alumni association. “I wanted them to play sports because of the wonderful lessons you learn, like getting up when you get knocked down, the teamwork, and all those other good attributes.”

Quick question.... does Archie have any more kids?

Adam's the youngest, the other two were from another marriage and went to Shaker Heights (east side of Cleveland) about five years before me.

Andre was a walk-on RB during the latter part of the Cooper era. RB coach at Saginaw Valley State. I don't remember the oldest's name but I don't think he played collegiately.

Easy to get confused because Ray Griffin has at least one son who was on the team as well (Kevin).

Meet a Buckeye: CB Adam Griffin

CB // Adam Griffin

Year: Redshirt sophomore

Vitals: 5 feet 8 inch, 180 pounds

Hometown: Columbus (DeSales)

Major: Family resource management

By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Friday September 14, 2012

The son of two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, Adam Griffin was named the Buckeyes? special-teams player of the game in the season-opening victory against Miami. Although he cherishes his role in the kicking game, Griffin is working to earn more playing time as a cornerback after two years buried on the depth chart.

Q: What was it like for you the first couple of years here when you didn?t get to play much?

A: It was extremely frustrating. I remember going home at night mad at the world almost every day after practice. Now it?s coming to fruition.

Q: What would you do to relieve your frustration?

A: I just went out and shot baskets. I love basketball. It was pretty tough. I talked to my mom and my dad about it, and they were pretty comforting.

Q: I?d guess it?s not always easy to grow up as the football-playing son of Archie Griffin. What has that been like?

A: I?m pretty comfortable with it. I?ve grown used to it over the years, just being from around here. It?s really nothing new to me. People kind of recognized me in high school but not quite to the level I?m recognized now.

Q: How often has your father said, ?Be your own person??

A: My dad says that to me all the time. And my mom (Bonita) probably says it to me more than him. She says: ?Be Adam Griffin. You?re Adam Griffin.?

Not only the fake punt break up, but in on a number of tackles... fine work, young Buck!!

Absolutely! That was a huge momentum shift. Great job to not interfere. Way to go Little Griff.

l always thought they should let him wear #45. It would be really cool to see a player with #45 and Griffin on his back again making plays in Ohio Stadium. The only person that they would temporarily unretire the number for. Then again maybe he wouldn't want to wear #45.
