DB Christian Bryant (Official Thread)

With his tendency for over-pursuit and missed tackles, I don't know that he would have made a difference, but I'm a bit miffed that he didn't play today.

This is the one game where I don't mind the trash talk and I took the over on his personal fouls at 2. :pissed:

Ohio State football: Bryant looks to be a big hit at safety
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday April 10, 2012

Christian Bryant doesn?t think there needs to be a show of hands to determine which Ohio State football players have bought in to coach Urban Meyer?s way of doing things.

?If you?re still here, you?ve bought in,? the safety said while in the midst of the Buckeyes? spring drills. ?When (the new coaches) first got here, it was a nice little transition; everybody wasn?t used to what they were bringing to the table.

?But now they?ve been here a couple of months, and I feel like everybody has bought into it.?

It?s called change, although some of that was going to come anyway after the Buckeyes capped a tumultuous year off the field with the first losing season since 1988. It?s just that Meyer and his staff, which includes strength and conditioning mentor Mickey Marotti, are now the ones making the demands.

?I bought into it as soon as they got here,? Bryant said. ?I feel like things have changed in a good way. It?s real positive around here. The new coaching staff and new strength staff, they came in here real positive and just wanting us to work hard, and that?s what we?re doing.?

OSU?s Bryant gets some lessons from a mento
Posted: Friday, September 7, 2012
By Jim Naveau

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State?s Christian Bryant has gotten some outside tutoring about playing safety from former All-American Mike Doss.

?I?ve been watching film in the offseason with Mike Doss and that got me a lot better,? Bryant said.

Doss, a three-time first-team All-American who played six years in the NFL, gave Bryant a straightforward evaluation of what he had seen from him in his first two years as a Buckeye.

He just said, ?Man, you gotta do way better,?? Bryant said, with a laugh. ?He saw some plays I let go last year and just gave me some tips on reading the offensive line and the backfield.

?Actually me and Mike Doss have been close this whole offseason. The first high school camp here he introduced himself to me and the bond just clicked. We both wear the same number and he said I had to hold it down,? he said.

Tackling is the area where Bryant thinks he has improved most this season.

?I felt like I was kind of a loose cannon on the field playing too fast. This year I feel like I?ve got it calmed down a little bit, just reading a little bit more on the field.?

September, 15, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The case might have already been made.

Christian Bryant's first career interception sealed the Buckeyes' 35-28 win over California.

Flying around the field to make tackles, arriving at just the right time to break up passes and finding ways to influence the game at safety, Christian Bryant was well on his way to perhaps the best performance of his career.

After sealing a 35-28 win over California with a fourth-quarter interception, there wasn't much left to argue about for the Ohio State junior.

"I feel like it was my best game so far," Bryant said. "Just finally getting my hands on the ball, finally see how it feels so hopefully there?s many more to come.

"I?ve still got a lot of progress to make, and I'm just going into the next week trying to get better."

Tutored by former Ohio State great and three-time All-American Mike Doss, safety Christian Bryant has shown flashes of brilliance this season.

The Glenville product's first career interception all but sealed the Buckeyes' 35-28 win over Cal earlier this season, and he has taken his role on the team to heart as Ohio State continues to navigate its way through its first year under Urban Meyer.

Christian Bryant's first career interception sealed the Buckeyes' 35-28 win over California.
The junior played in 12 games last season and made nine starts.

His Glenville ties in the secondary aren't a surprise as Bryant is molded from the same fabric as former Buckeyes Donte Whitner and Jermale Hines.

An All-Ohio selection as a senior, Bryant was the Senate League's Offensive Player of the Year when the Tarblooders went 13-2 and reached the Division I state final.

One interesting note about Bryant is he scored four different ways -- touchdown run, touchdown pass, field goal and interception return -- during a 57-28 Glenville win over a Hubert Heights Wayne team led by current Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller.

BN: How do you assess your team's performance from the first week of the season until now?

Bryant: I think we've come a long way as a defense and as an offense. The offense has had a couple of three-and-outs from time to time, but if they continue to move the ball, we'll be fine.

BN: You guys have come under scrutiny for missed tackles. Where is the team now?

This guy has so much talent, but every time the ball is thrown to his side of the field I hold my breath, hoping he doesn't either a) get a personal foul penalty, or b) gamble on an INT and get burned.

The upside is crazy, if he can sharpen his instincts.

I've noticed that there is a HUGE difference of opinions on him from insiders. Some love him and think he's one of the best performing players on this defense and others think he is the opposite. Very odd. I suppose maybe it's because sometimes he plays like both.

He needs to wrap up and tackle. He went for the big hit last week, and literally bounced off the dude.

I'm sure he's been able to lay people out his whole life before getting to college and so it's more instinctual to try and lay the wood as opposed to wrapping up and making a fundamentally sound tackle. In his HS highlights, his film was filled with insane hits and made a viewer say ooh and aaah. At this level, and if he can make the next, skill position players are much bigger and I hope he can work on making sound tackles, because he can easily be one of the top safeties in the big ten if not the nation.

He is still young. I'm one of those who is impressed with his development thus far. He puts fear into the Offense for sure with some of the vicious hits he puts on people. But I agree, he needs to become more disciplined and start wrapping up guys.

He'll play a key role in stopping NEB Offense on Saturday. Here's hoping he has the game of his life.
