Senior safety Christian Bryant will be one of the leaders of an inexperienced Ohio State defense in 2013.

Christian Bryant has come a long way as a safety at Ohio State by going with his gut and getting to the ball in a foul mood. It?s called playing on instinct.

?Christian is one of those guys who is a natural football player,? safeties coach Everett Withers said of the senior after practice yesterday. ?But he doesn?t have some natural football position things (in terms of fundamentals), so he has to work at them. Really good football players work on their weaknesses. They don?t just continue to work on strengths. It?s every day that we try to push that with him.?

Bryant, who is spending his time working on tackling technique, making interceptions and the like, went into spring practice trying to be a leader. He had to. He and safety C.J. Barnett are two of only four returning starters on the defense.

?I definitely feel like we have more of an impact role on the leadership position right now, as far as losing seven guys,? Bryant said. ?The secondary is pretty experienced right now, but the only starter we have coming back in the front seven is Ryan (Shazier, linebacker), so we have a lot of voids to fill. But the young guys who are stepping up in those roles are really doing an incredible job.?

But Bryant also has a checklist of areas where he knows he needs to improve. It could be titled Back to Fundamentals.

?I?m just trying to work on my football position a little more, like keeping my head up when I tackle,? Bryant said. ?Just some little fundamental things, like catching the ball, little fundamental things that will help me down the road.?

Ohio State safety Christian Bryant is striving for soundness

OSU safety Christian Bryant, a Glenville High product, has a chance of being named a team captain this year, a role he would relish.
Marvin Fong, The Plain Dealer

Columbus -- When a Heisman Trophy winner offers football advice -- especially one who attended the same high school and college -- it's probably a good idea to heed it.

That's what Ohio State junior safety Christian Bryant did this winter after chatting with former Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith. The former Glenville products were talking about ways to increase Bryant's interception total.

The safety has built a reputation as being a big hitter -- and a defender who occasionally whiffs on tackles -- but he has picked off only one pass in his career. With the Buckeyes expected to contend for a BCS title, Bryant wants to improve his ballhawking skills.

During winter break, Smith told the defensive back he should practice catching between 50 and 100 balls a day. Bryant has been working on it, and Tuesday, he intercepted a deflected pass during an 11-on-11 drill in a spring practice session.

"I'm working on catching the ball," said Bryant, who, during the break, snared passes from Smith and current Buckeyes backup Cardale Jones. "You know, while it's in the air, I'm going to get the ball."

Bryant can definitely be a leader. I think if he plays a little more sound, and wraps up ALL THE TIME, plus curbs the 15 yard Personal Fouls, our secondary will be great. I can't remember how many times last year our D would make a stop only to be put right back on the field by a 15 yarder. This kid has all the tools!

Striking out on Joyner, but getting Bryant sure looks pretty good in hindsight.

I felt that way as soon as it became apparent Joyner came with a proverbial 'third uncle,' and we all know how Urban feels about recruits' third uncles.

Bryant took a lot of heat in the past about his reckless play. Over the last 6 games of the season, he was probably our 3rd or 4th best player on defense. I'm expecting big things from him this year.

100% agree. It will be interesting to see how he starts this season relative to how he finished last season. He shined very early in his career as a very young player but seemed to lose some control of his responsibilities as a safety. I suspect he'll be a very solid and reliable safety this season. We need it.

I would like him to play more reliable, but not lose that killer instinct, "take your head off" mentality that he's had while in s&g. Its been this mentality that has put fear in WRs going across the middle. I would just like him to rein in that aggresion and use it in certain situations, as opposed to every play. Hopefully with experience and seasoning he has learned this

OSU’s Bryant: ‘Targeting’ rule will make him cautious, not tentative
Posted: Thursday, July 25, 2013
By JIM NAVEAU

CHICAGO — It started out feeling like a compliment but it also became a bit of a burden for Ohio State defensive back Christian Bryant after he answered the same question repeatedly for nearly two hours at the Big Ten Football Media Days on Thursday.

The questions kept coming about the NCAA’s new rule against defensive players targeting defenseless offensive players above the shoulders.

It is no small matter, since the policy calls for ejection from the game plus a 15-yard penalty.

Replay officials can review it, but if the penalty stands and it occurred in the first half, the defender will miss the rest of the game. If it happens in the second half, he misses the first half of the next game.

Bryant is among the hardest and more flamboyant hitters among Big Ten defenders, so he became sort of an unofficial spokesman Thursday.

How many times did he answer the question? “Fifty,” Bryant said, with a smile.

Not surprisingly, the new rule doesn’t make him smile. He thinks it should be sent back for further review. But he says it won’t dramatically change the way he plays.

“It’s not going to make me tentative at all. But I am going to be cautious. I don’t want to get ejected,” he said.

“It’s kind of an interesting subject. In a game you’re not thinking about, ‘Oh, I’m not going to hit this guy in a certain way.’ I feel like they should go back to that rule and look over a few things before they make it final because I don’t think they thought everything through.”
