DB Jayme Thompson (Transfer to Iowa Western; Indiana Verbal)

Safety second
2013 recruit Thompson credits martial arts for his quick development

At 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds, it's hard not to notice Jayme Thompson (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) at his safety position.

The idea that the 2013 Ohio State recruit, who is ranked 209th in the ESPN 300, didn't start on his high school team until last season makes it even harder.

New to the game as a freshman, he didn't top the depth chart on the junior varsity squad as a sophomore -- except for special teams -- though he got some varsity time near the end of the season.

Division 2 #1 Irish are spanking #8 Findlay tonight. 56 - 27. Shutout Findlay in the second half. Running backs were over 520 yards rushing on 70 carries. Joe Solomon with a pic in the second half that took the life out of Findlay. Jayme Thompson played well on both sides of the ball.

Central Catholic wins Region 6 championship game against Avon, 42-14
BY STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Ohio State-bound Irish defensive back Jayme Thompson picked off a pass that was deflected, then tightroped the right sideline on the way to the first 24-yard interception return TD for Central with 3:32 left in the third quarter.

?The offense gave us the lead and we just wanted to hold it,? Thompson said. ?The defense just followed the game plan and we did what we had to do to win.

?This is extremely exciting. It?s an amazing feeling.?

OSU recruit: Central Catholic safety back Jayme Thompson (6-2, 190) is one of several recruits Ohio State coach Urban Meyer convinced to change his oral commitment. Thompson initially said he would sign with West Virginia, then switched to Ohio State in April.

"Jayme will hit you and runs real well," Toth said. "We move him around in a lot of places. The popular word for him is 'hybrid.' He can cover and be a linebacker type."

Rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, Thompson is expected to play safety at OSU.

Jayme Thompson

School: Central Catholic Size/Class: 6-1, 180; senior Position: Defensive back
Scouting report: The Ohio State-bound defensive playmaker is quick and strong. As one of the senior leaders, he's helped team reach Division II state semifinal. He has made 44 tackles, including 21 solo. He's also intercepted two passes and returned both for touchdowns, and has three fumble recoveries and two sacks.
Coach's comment: "Jayme is a rare combination for a defensive back. Jayme can cover, can play in the box to stop the run, and blitz off the edge like a linebacker. He has a combination of skills that has allowed us to play him in a variety of positions where the offense has to account for him." ? Greg Dempsey
