S Vonn Bell (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Carolina Panthers)

Re: Vonn Bell undergoes MCL surgery

Needless to say: That's a dirty rotten shame. However, we all know injuries are a part of the game. One guy's misfortune is another guy's opportunity, so as they say "next man up".

Let's just hope he makes a quick and full recovery; and is ready to go (100%) at the start of the summer camp though.

'It is still a knot in my stomach': Injured Ohio State safety Vonn Bell remains positive about recovery, but still thinks about last season's ending

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Vonn Bell spent the first three minutes of the interview talking about his mental strength and his positive attitude.

Equipped with a smile, he so elegantly attempted to cover up how disappointed he has been while missing all of Ohio State's spring ball after he tore his MCL in the first practice.

Then he gave it all away.

"We were doing 7-on-7s when it happened," Bell said. "It was the 25th play."

Knowing the exact play in which the injury occurred seems rather precise, but Bell would know. He had 25 plays as a starting safety in Ohio State's defense this spring, and he isn't yet in the position to take any of them for granted.

A former five-star prospect in the Buckeyes' 2013 recruiting class, Bell spent the entire regular season on the bench. Even when Christian Bryant was lost of the year with an injury, coach Urban Meyer turned to fifth-year senior Corey Brown to fill the hole.

But after Ohio State's perfect season and national title dreams were spoiled in a loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship game – which happened in large part because of poor play in the secondary – that all changed.

Bell was named a starting safety opposite of C.J. Barnett for the Orange Bowl. That didn't stop Ohio State's struggles stopping the pass in a 40-35 loss to Clemson, and Bell was beaten by future NFL first-rounder Sammy Watkins for a 34-yard touchdown.

He likes to remember the good, though, like his one-handed interception in the red zone that likely kept the Tigers from routing the Buckeyes. Plays like that are the reason Bell had those 25 as a starter to begin spring.

"It was really tough to get injured, but I'm mentally strong," said Bell, again reverting to his positive outlook. "Everything happens for a reason."

Though Bell won't be back in action until the summer, he'll likely return to his starting post when fall camp begins. With Barnett and Bryant both gone, Bell and Tyvis Powell are the likely bets as the Buckeyes' starting safeties.

But lets get back to the part Bell is avoiding. The agonizing part.

Bell was part of a defense that allowed 1,114 yards and 74 points in two losses to close out the season. And as Ohio State begins playing with a new, more-aggressive philosophy this spring to fix that, Bell has to sit and watch.

As he watches, Bell thinks about last year a lot.

"It is still a knot in my stomach – it bothers me every day," Bell said. "So I challenge myself to do better every day and watch film and compete. We're going to fix that problem next season."

Ohio State has preached the importance of playing faster and making up for mistakes later. It's about aggressiveness, not allowing other teams to be quicker to make plays.

Bell feels as if he'll excel playing in that role, and though he won't find out for sure until the fall, he remains positive about his future.

"I have the same expectations for myself - to be a part of a fearless defense," Bell said. "And I am going to make plays."

Vonn Bell says he's 100 percent, Joey Burrow has busy day: Five things to know from Ohio State's one-day instructional camp

1. Vonn Bell is perfectly healthy. I was on the sideline watching the drills when Ohio State's sophomore safety walked by. We chatted for a few seconds and Bell told me that he's 100 percent, feeling great and will be ready to fully participate in fall camp.

Bell, who missed all of spring practice with a torn MCL that he suffered on the first day of spring, is hoping to win the starting safety spot he earned for the Orange Bowl. He told cleveland.com in April that he still is haunted by Ohio State's secondary issues from last year.

"It is still a knot in my stomach – it bothers me every day," Bell said. "So I challenge myself to do better every day and watch film and compete. We're going to fix that problem next season."

Every year around this time, I start to get the itch for Buckeye Football. In particular, I start counting down until @jwinslow posts his camp check-in pictures where you can tell who's been getting after it in the weight room.

I'm expecting Vonn Bell to look more like Vonn Bell 2.0 when he checks in this year. 15-20 more lbs on that dude would be ideal.

Bell is going to get flagged for mouthing off and taunting soon. Maybe concentrate on how to tackle and not miss on a huge play and also not being late on very long passes when the game is on the line.
