S Vonn Bell (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Carolina Panthers)

With the recent issues at Nickel (Webb suspension and Burrows injury), what are the chances Bell slides down and plays that Nickel corner? Seems like we have more safeties on the depth chart than corners.

FILM STUDY: ILLUSTRATING VONN BELL'S GAME-CHANGING INTERCEPTION AGAINST MINNESOTA

62877_h.jpg,qitok=NTGZCrK1.pagespeed.ce.HDAES7lAHr.jpg

Coming off a heartbreaking, last-second loss to Michigan the week prior, the Minnesota Golden Gophers knew they'd be facing yet a tough test for the second time in as many weeks when they entered Ohio Stadium Saturday night.

Though quarterback Mitch Leidner had set a new career record in passing yards against a tough Wolverine pass defense, he'd be facing yet another top-five unit in the Buckeye secondary.

After failing to establish the run at any point throughout the evening, Leidner and company began to move the ball through the air once again, getting the ball out quickly to a multitude of receivers and tight ends. Seven different Gophers would record receptions on the night, but the top target was clearly senior wideout KJ Maye, who tallied 10 catches on the evening.

The Gophers' third drive of the game would see them record a first down for the first time, but after only moving the ball 30 yards and eventually punting, the sequence would largely be forgotten. However, one person that vividly recalled that drive was Ohio State safety Vonn Bell.

On a defense full of NFL-caliber talent, Bell has emerged as one of the unit's best play-makers. The junior from Georgia ranks third on the team in tackles while leading it in passes-broken-up.

Yet Leidner would go right at the mid-season All-American, trying to expose the man-to-man coverage that the Buckeyes have shown against pro-style offenses like Minnesota's. Facing 3rd-and-4, the Gophers sent Maye on a short crossing route, picking up the first down easily.

Though the yardage would be negated thanks to an illegal block downfield, the play's effect would stick with Bell, who bit on an initial outside move to allow Maye room to make the play inside. The idea is part of the "Trail" concept, which clears out defenders in solo coverage first and letting the intended receiver follow behind, assuming he's created space from his defender.

VONN BELL, TWO-WAY STAR? “I TELL COACH SMITH ALL THE TIME, ‘PUT ME IN THERE, I’LL RUN A ROUTE FOR YOU’”

As Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner dropped on a 3rd-and-6 Saturday night from inside his own 10-yard line, he looked to his left and threw a pass intended for wide receiver K.J. Maye, who was running a short crossing route near the first-down marker.

Ohio State safety Vonn Bell was in man coverage on the play and, because the Gophers had run a similar route concept earlier in the game, the Buckeyes’ All-American candidate jumped the route and intercepted Leidner’s pass.

Bell wasn’t done, though. After his pick, the junior safety made a juke move on Minnesota wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky, then outran the rest of the Gophers’ offense before he dove into the end zone for a touchdown to open the scoring for third-ranked Ohio State.

The pick-six by Bell brought life to the Ohio Stadium crowd that had been somewhat quiet through the first half of Saturday’s game. That’s something the talented junior is used to doing, though. Bell is one of the Buckeyes’ biggest defensive playmakers.

“It just brings me back to my high school days, I get to touch the paint a little bit more,” Bell said of the play Monday. “It’s being out there and making all those plays for Buckeye Nation, this team, it’s just an honor.”

Vonn Bell's Confident There's More Touchdowns to Come from Him

BellScoring.jpg

When speaking to Vonn Bell, it’s apparent how many things come naturally to him. The junior safety for Ohio State just exudes confidence and it shows by his play.

Going back to his freshman year, he was never intimidated by the college game and fought to get on the field, earning his first start in the Buckeyes’ bowl game against Clemson.

“That’s where I took off, really,” he said of the Orange Bowl. “Got a little groove, got my feet wet. Had my little growing pains there, going against one of the top receivers in the country… It got my feet wet and it prepared me for my sophomore season.”

Though Bell struggled in that first start, he found his “groove” as a sophomore and hasn’t looked back. He’s now become one of the top players, not only for the Silver Bullets but on the entire Ohio State team.

“Even more bigger plays, especially in bigger games,” Bell said when asked what’s the next step in his progression. “With the College Football Playoffs coming up and the Big Ten Championship coming up, so keep on making big plays in those games and having those moments of keeping everybody on the edge of their seats.”

Despite playing defense, Bell is one of the team leaders in touchdowns on the season. He scored on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery against Hawaii in week two and had a pick six last Saturday against Minnesota.

“I have a goal for more than that, and I think I have another one left in me,” Bell said of touchdowns. “But we’ll see what happens and you’ll never know which game it’s going to come in because of all of these big games coming up. Just get ready to go. I might have two left, I think. We’ll see what happens.”

If they bite as a pup.....

Wasn't hard to see that Vonn Bell was a very special player from day one. It's about his time to start blowing up for the OSU defense. Would love to see Conley or Apple really get back in the groove again and completely shut down their sides of the field so our front 7 can eat. Saturday seems like the perfect time to get that going.
