DE Noah Spence (Official Thread)

Just say Noah
Rising sophomore Spence performing at high level as he tries to replace Simon

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On paper, the matchup hardly seems even.

Lining up on one side is a fifth-year senior, a relentless competitor expected to soon be appointed captain coming off 25 consecutive starts and a second-team All-Big Ten selection. Across from him is a sophomore who has never started a game, has just 12 tackles to his credit and is trying to fill one of the biggest voids on the Ohio State roster.

But when the drills start and the resumes are thrown out, the matchup looks unfair yet again -- but now the veteran looks like the underdog.

The battles have played out all spring, with left tackle Jack Mewhort and defensive lineman Noah Spence often providing the marquee showdown in full-contact work in the trenches. And while Mewhort has done nothing to diminish his reputation as one of the best blockers in the conference, he and the rest of the Buckeyes up front have certainly had their hands full with Spence emerging as a dynamic force at end.

"I'm glad he's on our team, that's all I can say," offensive line coach Ed Warinner said. "He can be an impact player for us."

Ohio State football: Sophomore Noah Spence embraces being leader

Noah Spence (9) gets past Chase Farris for one of his three sacks in the spring game.

A larger Noah Spence believes he is prepared to take on a larger role for the Ohio State defense this season.

Talk about preparation meeting opportunity. And that?s exactly what the Buckeyes ? ranked No. 2 in both major preseason polls despite having seven new starters on defense ? need from the sophomore defensive end, once a rivals.com five-star prospect out of Harrisburg, Pa.

In fact, that larger role is expected from Spence as Ohio State works to replace all four starters on the defensive line.

?I am trying to become more of a leader on our defensive line because there are a lot of young players on the line,? Spence said. ?So I guess I?ve got to pull up and play that role.?

That?s asking a lot from a guy who played intermittently last season in relief of Nathan Williams at the ?Leo? position ? the defensive end who sometimes rushes and sometimes drops into coverage ? a swing spot that often gives the OSU defense more of a 3-4 look. Spence played in 11 games, registering 12 tackles and just one sack. But in taking over the No. 1 spot in the spring, he had three sacks in the spring game alone.

Now he?s expected to not only be a full-time starter, but also serve as an example, a role that junior defensive tackle Michael Bennett thinks Spence has embraced.
