DT Adolphus "Diesel" Washington (Official Thread)

I didn't realize he was a center on his team. I wonder if he has grown or if he plays center out of necessity.

A lot of teams play smaller more athletic guys at center. If you're 6'4" and can cover inside and out you bring a lot of value to the team. He's also going to be a lot stronger than a player with a basketball body type so rooting a bigger player out probably isn't an issue for him.

I can guarantee u its out of necessity. Taft isn't a school known for athletics. Matter of fact I can remember a time when the city was ready to shut down all their sports due to anlack of funding. That's what makes washingtons story so interesting. This school was the bottom in everything and it's great to see Washington and Stafford getting d1 scholarships.

Taft star wins award
Washington is co-player of year

Taft senior Adolphus Washington added to his list of accolades Monday when he was named Associated Press Division II co-player of the year for the second consecutive season.

Washington, who will play football at Ohio State, averaged 23.1 points and 14.3 rebounds per game, but the Senators came up short of repeating when they lost 81-59 to Dayton Dunbar in the regional tournament.

Washington was also named the Division III Associated Press co-defensive football player of the year after making 90 tackles with 23.5 sacks. He was named second team on ESPNHS All-America and Sports Illustrated High School All-America. He was among 16 seniors nominated for the U.S. Army Player of the Year Award.

?I think about it,? Washington said earlier this year of the accolades. ?I am not going to lie. ? I am the type of person that will work and do what I have to do.?

?You don?t have to look any further than his personality to know why all this success comes his way,? Taft coach Mark Mitchell told The Enquirer last year. ?He?s a caring kid, he?s a kind kid, he?s a respectful kid who has been raised by his dad (Adolphus Sr.) and mom (Rhonda) to be that way. He?s got all of those attributes that he takes on the court.?

Written by mdyer

Taft boys? basketball coach Mark Mitchell couldn?t hide his enthusiasm when he heard early Thursday afternoon about Adolphus Washington winning the Gatorade Ohio Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.

?This is a tremendous honor,? Mitchell said. ??Anytime you get one of your kids to play at a supreme level and do some good things you can?t be anything but happy for him.?

Thursday?s award marked another significant honor for Washington in his storied high school athletic career.

Washington, who has signed with Ohio State for football, was named the Associated Press Division II state co-player of the year Monday night, but the Gatorade award recognizes him as the state?s top overall player.

Much to his delight, Washington said he found out about the Gatorade award during his computer class on Thursday. ?I was happy,? Washington said. ?I was surprised.?

Ohio State Football: Going Inside the Buckeyes with Adolphus 'Diesel' Washington
By Michael Chung
(Correspondent) on April 2, 2012

Buckeye Nation often points to the hiring of Urban Meyer on Nov. 28, 2011 as the turning point of one of the worst years in Ohio State football history, but one week before Meyer was hired, Ohio State received a commitment from Cincinnati Taft High School DE Adolphus Washington, whom many regarded as the top player in Ohio.

Upon his commitment to play for the Buckeyes, Washington mentioned that he hoped to play for Meyer; he received his wish. I had a chance to ask him a few questions. He also has a nickname, "Diesel," so his initials will be AD for his first name and his nickname.

You committed before Urban Meyer took the job, why did you commit then?

AD: I committed because the coaches still were trying to get me to come there even though they knew they were not going to be there, so I knew I was going to a good school, but the main reason I went was because it was my dream school.

Would you have decommitted had Urban Meyer not taken the job?

AD: No, I would of stayed committed because I love Ohio State.

Boone County?s Sydney Moss and Taft?s Adolphus Washington were named high school most valuable players of the year during Sunday?s annual LaRosa?s Hall of Fame banquet at WCET studios.

Moss, Kentucky?s Miss Basketball who will play at the University of Florida, was named LaRosa?s 2011-12 girls? MVP. Washington, a football and basketball standout heading to Ohio State on a football scholarship, is this year?s boys? MVP.

Washington, a high school All-American in football and Ohio?s Gatorade Player of the Year in basketball, thanked the selection committee for his honor via video presentation.

His father accepted the award.

?I?m truly honored to receive this award,? said Washington, who had 90 tackles and 23.5 sacks as a first-team all-state football player his senior year. He averaged 23.1 points and 14.8 rebounds as a senior for the Taft basketball team, which he helped lead to a state championship as a junior.

Washington, twice the Ohio DivisionII co-player of the year in basketball and a 2011 Ohio DivisionIII-IV defensive player of the year in football, said his goal is to play on the gridiron at the highest level. ?I have a dream of one day playing in the NFL,? he said.
