DT Adolphus "Diesel" Washington (Official Thread)

@AWardESPN Adolphus Washington told me "most likely" he would return to Ohio State next season.

My guess is that the "most likely" part is dependent on what he hears from the NFL. I'm not sure what his threshold is though. ie first and he would leave, or 1st/2nd, or 1st-3rd, etc. My guess is that he would go 3rd round, maybe 2nd if he shows well Thursday.

I asked Adolphus Washington about the NFL. He said he plans to return. He said moving back to 3-tech next year will help his draft stock.

Ohio State only thing on Adolphus Washington's mind
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Adolphus Washington wasn’t following his own stock, so he needed a teammate to tell him it was on the rise.

The Ohio State defensive tackle wasn’t familiar with the process of getting feedback from the NFL draft advisory board, so he had a reporter offer up some details.

And while Washington was certainly aware by the time the Allstate Sugar Bowl rolled around what a breakout performance could do for his standing in the eyes of NFL scouts and general managers, it was still low on his priority list -- both because he was trying to keep the No. 4 Buckeyes alive in the College Football Playoff and because his intention was to return for another title run next season anyway.

“I can’t really give too much thought to it right now,” Washington said. “Actually, I didn’t hear about my stock myself. Mike Bennett actually came and told me. I walked into the [practice facility] and he was like, ‘I know you saw what happened on Twitter.’ I’m like, ‘No, what happened?’ Well, Mel Kiper was talking about me.

“So I kind of snuck away to look it up and see what he said. Obviously I was very excited, but I really can’t speak on it right now. More than likely I’m going to come back.”

Contd...
“That’s him, that’s Adolphus, really,” Johnson said. “Very unconcerned about what’s going on around him other than his teammates and this game. I can’t speak for him, but I feel really good that he’ll be here next year. We talked about that early on, and there are some things he wants to do. He wants to get his degree, he wants to graduate and he’s got a little girl he wants to take care of. All those things factor in, so he’s not in a rush financially and he wants to make sure he protects himself for the rest of his life by having an Ohio State degree.

“He’s different. He’s not like the normal guy, like I can’t wait to get out of here.”

Great news, but given the fact he has a child I couldn't blame him for going and earning a living. Love to see him get a solid senior season in, though. I think he can be even more special next year with a bigger leadership role.

GEARING UP FOR HIS FINAL SEASON, OHIO STATE'S ADOLPHUS WASHINGTON POISED FOR A BIG YEAR

Adolphus Washington didn’t hear the discussion. In fact, he wasn’t even aware it was going on.

“I didn’t even know I was being talked about for the NFL,” Ohio State’s senior defensive tackle said Thursday at Big Ten Media Days. “That’s how I knew I wasn’t ready.”

By all accounts, though, last year he was ready. Many scouts and NFL Draft experts pegged Washington to go somewhere between the second and fourth rounds in the Draft had he opted to declare after his junior season, one which Washington recorded 48 tackles (10.5 for loss), and 4.5 sacks.

Still, Washington elected to return to the Buckeyes. He stated multiple times at the end of last season’s national championship run he had no intentions of leaving early for the NFL and explained again Thursday why he opted to use his final year of eligibility in Columbus.

“I didn’t feel like I was ready, I didn’t feel like I was ready at all,” Washington said. “I feel like I needed to get another year under coach Johnson. For a guy that’s coached as many first rounders as he has, I feel like I definitely needed another year under him.”
