DT Michael Hill (Official Thread)

I think through the offseason we'll see 2-3 of those guys step up. Holmes & Schutt should start and with the praise that Hubbard has gotten I expect him to get a lot of backup time or possibly even surpass Holmes. Munger seemed to play quite a bit against Oregon, although I can't remember how well he did.

Washington is taking over Bennett's position. I think they want a space eater in Munger or Hill for the other spot.

Schutt isn't big enough or physical enough for that role. He also hasn't shown a ton in limited action. I'd be surprised if Munger isn't the starter

I agree mostly but as for the bolded...Tommy is the king of disrupting space and letting others make plays, hence why you do not hear his name. He makes the play, not the tackle...I'm extremely confident in Tommy. But I think Hill is a 1-tech like Tommy but can be so disruptive that he can hear his name called a ton...at least his HS film indicated that to me. Either way, we need a solid rotation next season and Hill must step up.

I agree with RB.

This needs moved to the 2015 D-Line Discussion, but I always found Schutt to be a BIG dude and pretty effective. He was getting a decent amount of PT when they did decent to rotate on the line. He'll be great next year.

Schutt got some PT against a Wisky & Oregon. I agree w/RB for the most part, but if you watch Schutt close, he doesn't move downhill very well, obviously not his strength. He's a space eater, comes off the ball "skrong" but haven't seen much from him beyond that. A lot of time to improve, I'm not trying to crticize him too hard.

Lewis also saw some PT. He's a huge body, big, "skrong" kid. Looks a little stiff yet, but could be a beast on the end w/more experience. I like the athleticism btwn he and Holmes down the road.

I foresee some growing pains w/this group in 2015. Urban was doing his thing earlier saying publicly how disapointed he was in the DL depth. He's motivating. We have the right coach in that role (LJ), so I'm comfortable. The talent is there, just need more reps.

Don't believe Lewis was mentioned with regards to depth. Don't forget him. Lots of bodies.

Lewis is a DE...barely a pound over a LB at that. He will factor in at DE but not DT unless he camps out at the High Street McDonalds until about August.

But I think Hill could be the starter, he just will have a battle with Schutt. I really hope this is a tough battle because we need both guys in the interior.

Bump.

With an incredibly young class it's hard to pinpoint just a few guys who really need to step up but Mike is on my short list. I put in Bosa's thread I can see the Lil Bear starting mid year and playing in the 3 spot next to Mike. Just makes me realize even more how crucial it will be if big Mike can step up.

When a guy like this really emerges it makes a noticeable impact on a championship run. Yes we need just about every group to step up too but to me, if I am ranking the most crucial position group it's the DT's and Mike seems poised to lead that group. Hope he is ready to shine. I expect to see the most rotation we have seen yet in the Urban ere and there are many guys with potential but Mike needs to lead the way. It's his time.

***EDIT: I had to do a double take at the lack of posts on this thread during the '15 season. It's basically non-existent. Sure hope that isn't the case this year.

Mike needs to step up in a big way. I hope LJsr finally has the talent to be able to rotate guys in and out. But Mike needs to be a leader, I agree with that. He's been an after thought his entire Buckeye career until now. I remember when he first committed and Urban was excited about getting "an SEC DL", but he's been on the bench watching OH DL dominate the snaps.

I think Mike has shown some really good flashes, but never got the opportunity to show consistency with Bennett, Washington, and Schutt in front of him. By all means though, he MUST step up this year for our front 4 this year imo.

I remember him looking like a stud as a frosh vs SDSU. Since then it's been boom or bust with him. He'll make a good play then get blown off the ball the next.

WHO IS MICHAEL HILL? MEET OHIO STATE'S QUIET DEFENSIVE TACKLE WHO GREW UP FIVE MINUTES FROM CLEMSON'S CAMPUS

78607_h.jpg

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Paul Sutherland will never forget his first trip to Columbus, Ohio.

It was the summer of 2012 and Sutherland, the head football coach at Pendleton High School in Pendleton, South Carolina, was in town with his star player: a 6-foot-2 300-plus pound defensive tackle named Michael Hill. Sutherland, Hill and Hill’s father all made the nine-hour drive north so the four-star prospect could visit Ohio State.

Sutherland remembers Eddie George waiting for them inside Urban Meyer’s office when they arrived on campus. He recalls the professors calling out Hill’s high school stats as he toured the academic buildings. These things stood out, of course, but they’re not exactly the reason why Sutherland will always remember that first trip to Ohio State.

No, it was a certain climate change that captured everybody’s attention.

“What stood out most to us was it was the first week in June and I had to go out and buy a jacket that night,” Sutherland jokes now. “Michael did, too, and so did his dad and we almost didn’t find Michael a 5x. All three of us went out and bought jackets.”

“Never in my life had I bought a jacket in June before.”

Luckily for the Buckeyes, the temperature that day didn’t matter much to Hill. It was clear to him Ohio State was a special place, the place he wanted to play his college football.

Hill pledged to Meyer and former assistant coaches Mike Vrabel and Everett Withers — Sutherland gives Withers a ton of credit for building a relationship with Hill throughout the recruiting process — shortly after that visit on June 27, 2012. When it happened, it was a big-time haul for Ohio State. For whatever reason, defensive tackles like Hill aren’t exactly at a surplus in the Midwest.

Now, four years later, Hill will start on the interior of the Buckeyes’ defensive line Saturday when they take on Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. But the Tigers being Ohio State’s opponent is especially unique for Hill when you consider his high school is a five-minute drive from Clemson’s campus.
