St. Patricks Day 1993, go to the Newport with some buddies for Goo Goo Dolls & Soul Asylum -- this was right after Superstar Car Wash & Grave Dancers Union had come out and both bands were starting to blow up, so it was a pretty big show for $15 or whatever the ticket price was. Park in a lot near High St, look around for signs ... see none, check all the other cars for stickers or hangers in the rear view mirrors ... see none. Go to the show. Leave show four hours later and come back to find car gone. Look around again and finally realize the only Shamrock Towing sign is hung outside a third story window of a building overlooking the parking lot, 20 ... 25 feet over the lot.

I have no sympathy for towing companies. Period. Fuck 'em all, shady motherfuckers.

ESPN is spending half the day fellating that kid from UConn (Byron Jones) who had the 12'3" broad jump at the combine, and right now they're showing Trey Wingo trying to do the broad jump with the kid.

I wasn't going to click on or read anything on Jason Whitlock's "Black Grantland" ESPN site called The Undefeated when it launched in the summer (I don't even read ESPN.com), but this is a comical portrayal or outing by Deadspin.

The fact that perhaps his own writers are turning on Whitlock may say a lot (someone is leaking material). I didn't have respect for Whitlock before reading this (now even less).

As for the Deadspin article: tl;dr.

I love to read Whitlock. Is it because he's objective? No. Is it because he presents an unvarnished viewpoint of African-American sporting life in the 21st Century? No. Is it because he's a great journalist, finding stories that nobody else does? No.

I love to read Whitlock because he is unfailingly thought-provoking, even when he's demonstrably full of shit. Because he presents a point of view that a 60-year-old white man in central Ohio seldom is able to hear. But most of all, I love reading him because he's entertaining as hell.

So sue me. I love to read Whitlock. To those who don't, I would say ... don't read him.
