ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

Mike and Mike is a great show if you like to listen to 25 minutes of commercials every hour.

No kidding -- it's fucking ridiculous. Heard Jerry Rice on there yesterday morning talking about Kay Jewelers (I think...) -- what the fuck? They even make their guests whore themselves out.

Robert Flores leaving ESPN on his own accord. Before more firings perhaps? Said in a statement he wants a place with more "creativity and security."

Always thought he was a decent follow on the Twitter. Quick-witted, and seemed to toe the company line- would see a few tweets that seemed to take shots at the network.

That's a PC way of saying, Neil and Stan get to do their own thing. SVP gets to do his own thing. Jay Crawford has the lunchtime show locked up for the next 20 years, and ESPN has cloned Rece Davis and installed him as host of every other show they do. Boomer and Trey aren't going anywhere, so f--- this, I'm out. Peace!

In Flores' list of 'great memories' he's leaving ESPN with, he included: "Finding out I had lost my spot on the midnight Sportscenter from Richard Deitsch's Twitter feed."

Some hurt feelings there.

Is The Longhorn Network Killing The Big 12?

Five years into the grand experiment, and the Longhorn Network is kind of a disaster. It’s losing money hand-over-fist: reportedly $48 million since its launch, with annual losses hovering in the millions. Subscriber fees are painfully low, and ESPN is locked into this thing for another 15 years. And according to Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy, the network threatens the very existence of the Big 12.

Gundy wants a conference-wide network, rather than one devoted to a specific program. He told CBS Sports the Big 12 can’t compete with the likes of the Big 10 or SEC thanks to the money rolling in from their networks:

“If we don’t eliminate the Longhorn Network and create our own network, they’re going to continue to have issues with this league.”

[...]

“If Texas doesn’t [fold LHN] in X number of years, they’re going to be in the Pac-12 or SEC,” Gundy said. “If that’s what they want, keep riding this horse. If you don’t want that, you better make some changes or it’s going to happen whether you like it or not.”

Well, Gundy’s not quite right here on Texas’s future prospects—the Longhorns are already making out like bandits.

As chronicled by SB Nation, ESPN’s 20-year deal with Texas pays the school a minimum annual royalty that averages about $15 million, increasing over the length of the contract—thus far it’s been about $12 million a year. By comparison, the SEC Network is turning a profit, and has more royalties to pay out—but those are distributed among each school equally.

So even without the 70 percent of revenue that will go to UT when (if) ESPN recoups its investment, the Longhorns are still making about twice as much each year from the Longhorn Network than any SEC program is from the SEC Network, even if the SEC Network is that much more successful overall. Texas has no incentive to wind down the Longhorn Network, or roll it into a Big 12 Network where it would have to share the royalties.

Gundy’s correct in that the rest of the Big 12 would benefit from the revenues of a wider Big 12 Network, something that’s not plausible as long as the conference’s biggest fish has its own deal. But for that to happen, Texas would need to forego cash for the greater good. And no successful program has ever gotten there via altruism.

Mike and Mike seems to be trying hard to be some sort of "crossover" show. Recently they have spent a great deal of time on the Bachelor and now they constantly talk about Batman vs. Superman. Heck, they even had Jamelle Hill on talking about it. I think Greeny secretly wishes he had got the gig with Kelly...

I'm not sure if it's always been this way, but every now and again recently, I'll turn Mike & Mike on (mainly if my first and second choices go to commercial at the same time). I find it unlistenable. Greeny in particular goes far out of his way not to offend anyone, or take a position that anyone could find offensive that he may someday want to ask to be on the show. It's a sports show--it's supposed to be about having an opinion.

It's because their entire industry is football. NBA gets more interesting as they get to the playoffs, but only 2 teams (and LeBron is becoming old news as the team is not hitting the expectations of when he arrived how can they win a title if GS doesn't lose more than one game in 7) are interesting to talk about consistently with a few other news stories popping up every once and a while. College basketball is good for maybe one story a week until march madness then it's good for the first weekend with all the madness. After that it's basically chalk and interest fades off as less teams are in it and less fans care. The draft is currently their biggest story.

And not to mention that, Mike and Mike aren't the types to create ratings with "shock talk" like a LeBatard, Cowherd, Russillo or even Patrick. They're so... Boring and conformist. They're the people who ride trends all the way until they die because they're popular and then find another trend based off of what was told them. They don't make stories, or create conversation. They're almost just an extension of Sportscenter where they just say the highlight, and then make a joke about Golic's weight and how geeky Greenburg is, then it gets awkward, cut to commercial, discuss another highlight, rinse and repeat
