Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

After the 06' game I thought McCoy was pretty bad albeit his Freshman year. Being so highly touted out of high school and trying to fill Young's shoes, I thought he would be lucky to even compete for a Big12 championship in his career given how good Oklahoma was expected (and turned out) to be. I really didn't give him much of a chance given his skill set, but his progession over the past two seasons is undeniable. He has certainly turned into one of the best quarterbacks in the nation and I give him credit for that. There is now doubt the McCoy we will face in January is a completely different football player than the one we saw in 06'. For our sake I hope he reverts back to his prior self, but I'm not holding my breath. He will play well and for us to be successful, making him uncomfortable is an absolute necessity. If our front seven give him time to throw he has proven the ability to give opponents a long night of torture.

After the '06 game McCoy developed well that year, and had Texas in position for a possible rematch with tOSU until he got a concussion on the goal line running a QB sneak against Kansas State. That led to the Texas losses in that game and against aTm, which allowed Oklahoma to win the Big 12.

McCoy was only a 3 star recruit coming out of high school. Jevan Snead was the highly touted on out of HS that Texas fans thought would eventually fill Vince Young's shoes. Many of the Texas fans that came to this board thought that McCoy was just keeping the QB position warm long enough for Snead to come in and save the day. By the end of the 2006 season it was apparent that McCoy was going to be good enough to keep the job and Jevan transferred to Ole Miss.

I think I misunderestimated you. I agree Snead was more highly touted out of HS but that is a separate issue I really wasn't addressing in my post. My point was McCoy went from a struggling redshirt freshman getting manhandled by a superior defense in the beginning of 06', to breaking records later that year and now being one of the best QBs in college football. The Snead situation was relevant to McCoy getting the job, not so much to his development as the quarterback we've seen IMHO.

Blind homerism is fun. Just because you don't blindly expect tOSU to win every game doesn't make you any less a fan.
Very True, but maybe one should wait until it's official before cutting your wrists and jumping off a cliff.
