Ohio State offers Apopka's Chandler Cox a scholarship

Ohio State has offered Apopka versatile athlete Chandler Cox a scholarship, joining a crowded field of high-profile programs taking interest in him.

Cox, who played fullback this year and the quarterback in Apopka's direct-snap, single-wing offense, is 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds.

Ohio State running backs coach Stan Drayton is Cox’s lead recruiter.

“Coach Drayton said they loved the way I play, and I could be a big part of their team and offense,” Cox wrote in a text message to the Orlando Sentinel confirming his latest scholarship offer. “He said they like how I can play and get anywhere.”

Cox said he was excited when college scholarship offers rolled in from Alabama and Miami the same day last month. Ohio State only added to the buzz he’s feeling this offseason.

“I’m very blessed to have these opportunities and it just makes me want to work harder,” Cox wrote. “I hope I can get up there on a visit soon.”

Cox one of three Apopka (13-2) players to rush for over 1,000 yards during the 2013 season. The Darters recorded a state-record 751 points en route to a runner-up finish to South Dade in the state title game. As a team, Apopka rushed for 5,962 yards.

He played a key role in the team’s successful run, stepping in to anchor the offense when star quarterback Zack Darlington was sidelined due to a head injury.
