Tonight is the night! Codi gets his first varsity start at Strongside Guard. I'm so excited I can hardly think straight. So many hours invested into this opportunity it's very emotional for the wife and I.

Some advice I thought I'd offer that I learned going through this process. If you have a son that eventually finds himself in this type of position (being pulled up to varsity). I strongly suggest you let him practice with the varsity even if he is playing JV or Freshmen. Since Codi started practicing with the var he has taken what were already strong Frosh game performances and turned them into complete dominations. In our game yesterday he played at a speed that was a noticable notch above his normal game speed after practicing for the week with the varsity. He also played more physical and took better angles. The practice speed he experienced and had to master to survive up there showed up big time in his Frosh game. This was likely his last frosh game of the year as I expect he'll just be varsity if he does well tonight.

Looking forward to hearing how he does...

As a 6'3" 270 lb Freshman, he has always had great size. What has impressed me most recently is the speed I have seen in the limited amount of footage I have watched. Wish he was playing OT but maybe being inside will help him as he competes and gains confidence....

I fully expect him to excel though....

Make sure you send me a DVD of the game...

It's good advice... I've had my boys playing up at least one level in lacrosse since they had teams on which they could play. Easily one of the best moves for their games.

Let us know how Codi does!

The stadium was packed and the place was rockin! It was so loud that you couldnt hear much on the field, and everyone was very excited to see how Codi would do. It was very cool to see all the older players rallying around Codi's first start. Best of all we won a close game 28-24.

Well, Codi played the entire game excpet one series at Strongside Guard. The team we played was running a 5-2 / 5-3 stack 90% of the time and a 4-3 the other times. His primary job turned out to be blocking a senior inside LB that was stunting the B gap most the night. The LB had been a second team All League player so I understood the matchup wouldnt be easy.

Overall, Codi kept him away from the ball most the night, and I'm guessing the LB got in on 5-6 tackles, only one of which was solo. On the negative side, Codi played a little high, and needs to work on staying lower on contact. He and our D1 prospect were next to each other and they both missed a few chop blocks on pass plays. Hard to know what they were thinking on those plays as they chopped air!

I think his best positives were that he was very quick out of his stance, and he was praised by his coaches during film for consistently being the fastest OL off the ball. They also liked his pulls upfield. He did dominate the smallest of the MLB 's and took him upfield 8-10 yards twice. He also pancaked him once. Unfortunately he only got to block the worse LB a few times. Most the game he had the better of the two on him. He did have two great cut blocks on the best MLB on pass plays and chopped him down hard. They really stood out on film. His one pancake block came on a short yardage TD run right behind him and the D1 prospect.

He did play well enough that he has been named the starter, but as with any competitive team it's something that he will have to battle week to week to keep. The player he has replaced on the OL is a senior and will work hard to get his job back. They do have that same player on the NT rotation though so I think it works in Codi's favor that they'd like to keep him fresh for defense.

For only having 3 practices exclusively with the varsity, I thought he did ok but I do think there is alot of room for improvement. This week we face a 4-4 / 6-2 team that will have him covered by a DT all game. I expect him to fair much better covered than he did chasing an LB around. Since he plays Strongside Guard, he will have a DT on his outside shoulder most of the night but will also have to keep an eye on his inside A gap for stunts from the two stacked MLB's (they will be right behind the two DT's about 4 yards deep). It will no doubt be a physical game for him.

I have also seen him become very confident since this experience. I think he knows that he belongs playing on this level and looks forward to improving over the next month before the playoffs begin. We face two excellent teams in the next 4 weeks.

I'll post a short highlight each week when I get the opportunity. I'd say this week given his time prepared and all the other factors he'd get a B or B+ grade on his performance. I think this week we'll see a huge improvement. He is fired up right now.

Here is a short highlight of various plays from Codi's Frosh season on the Varsity. Today is the first practice of the new season and he will again be starting on the strongside of the offense.

When you watch the highlights, Codi is always on the side of the offense with the most players (TE side) and lined up at Strongside Guard. The OT next to him (#63) just got a full ride to Colorado.

Codi is #77... 6'3 270

Update:

Codi and Dad will be transferring to Eureka High School 14 hours north. Dad (Mike) took the Head Coaching job at Eureka High School and both will be with the Loggers next season. The Loggers have finished 26-4 in the Big 5 league (North Coast Section) and won the 2009 North Coast Section title. Eureka is the largest school in Humboldt County.

Eureka High is the former HS of Rey Maualuga of USC and the NFL Bengals among others. It is 5 hours north of San Francisco.

Codi will be playing on the Strongside and some DE with Eureka. He is now up to 6'3 275 and still growing. Also on the Loggers roster are two D1 prospects going into their senior year with offers. OL Jason Hanson 6'2 255 and TE Nathan Madsen 6'4 260 both have 2-3 offers and will look real good next to Codi on the OL / DL.
