G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Sixers' Doug Collins confident in Evan Turner
BOB COONEY, Daily News Staff Writer [email protected]
Posted: Monday, December 10, 2012

DURING THE weekend split with the Boston Celtics, in which the 76ers garnered an overtime decision at home on Friday before a butt-kicking at Boston on Saturday, swingman Evan Turner hoisted a total of 42 shots.

Imagine that for a second. Turner, who has appeared to absorb much of coach Doug Collins' ire during their first two seasons together, had the freedom to take that many shots.

Had it not been for his 26th shot, the Sixers very well might have lost Friday's game. Turner's short jumper with 3.9 seconds left in overtime gave the Sixers a 95-94 win. The game-winner happened after he had turned the ball over late in regulation and missed his first four shots in overtime. It also came with the blessings from his coach.

Times have changed for Turner and Collins. The player has done what the coach has asked of him, and the coach has gained the utmost of confidence in the Ohio State product.

"The thing I'm really proud about is Evan took the shot after missing four or five in a row," Collins said. "That's big-time. Evan is an amazing kid. He's always been a guy that needs to feel that everything fits. I really feel good about the way he's letting me coach him. I feel a real connection with Evan and it feels great. I don't know that Evan has trusted a lot of people in his life, but I hope he trusts me."

Turner appears to and, more important, he is trusting himself and his game, which now is starting to closely resemble the one that garnered him consensus player of the year honors his last season in college.

Turner is able to get to where he needs to be to score and is making those shots. He is handling the ball better than ever as a pro, and appears to be playing at a comfort level that he hasn't experienced before.

"It's definitely improved," Turner said of his relationship with Collins. "It's just self-improvement on both ends. Obviously I was a little stubborn. Doug, every now and then, is stubborn a little bit. We've both been working on it. He's been working on his poise and just being more calm. I've been working on being more poised and it's definitely been helping."

It has helped him and the team. The proof came in that 26th shot on Friday.

Handing out alternative awards for the first quarter of the 2012-13 season

Evan Turner is shooting an astonishing 45.9 percent from deep after hitting only 22.4 percent of his three-pointers last year. (Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

By Rob Mahoney

With the first quarter of the season behind us, and the regular award updates already squared away by our own Ben Golliver, I instead opted to partake in the long-existing Internet practice of handing out made-up awards. Read, applaud politely for the winners and dispute away in the comments:

? MOST UNEXPECTED SKILL IMPROVEMENT: Evan Turner?s three-point shooting

Tons of players have added new wrinkles to their games this year, but no development has been more astonishing than Turner?s 45.9-percent shooting from beyond the arc ? a mark that more than doubles his 22.4 percent of last season. Turner has some interesting facets to his game, but going into this season it was difficult to envision what a successful role might look like for such a strange player. A good isolation option, but not the most effective wing within a conventional offense, his skills often overlapped with Jrue Holiday?s, making it tricky to manage the pair offensively at times. But the ability for Turner to spot up on the three-point line ? especially from the corners ? has been a wonderful surprise for the Sixers? offense.

The Rise Of Evan Turner
By Warren Shaw
Evan Turner

Evan-Turner-2-240x360.jpg

Expectations, whether they are fair or not, can sometimes ruin a player?s career, especially for those selected near the top of the NBA Draft. If selecting in the top-five, teams plan on getting a franchise changer, even if that player is a ?project? that may take a few years to develop.

When the Philadelphia 76ers took Evan Turner with the second pick in the 2010 Draft after a dismal 27-55 season, it was with the hope he would be the guy to lead them into their next era of success. They had already drafted Jrue Holiday, and realized that while Andre Iguodala was a very good player, he wasn?t a franchise player they could build their team around.

With Turner coming off one of the most impressive collegiate seasons in recent history, Philly expected greatness from the 6-7 swingman. What ensued was disappointment.

Turner's motivation to be great paying off
December 19, 201

Motivation can come from many directions for professional athletes. Some channel the struggles from their everyday circumstances into success. Some athletes suffer crumbling setbacks only to rededicate themselves and rise to new heights. Meanwhile, some people are born motivated -- the only kick in the pants they need is already there when they wake up in the morning.

Which Philadelphia athlete do you think resembles the latter profile the most? For me, it?s Evan Turner. In fact, Turner embodies a part of each of those three ideals.

Some people were prepared to write off the 6-7 guard/forward after he was slow to emerge in his first and second seasons. Not so fast. The second overall pick admitted to shooting over 50,000 shots this summer to prepare for the season. The guy just wants to be great.

In two full years he?s played off and on at three different positions and has finally started to flourish in his third season starting at small forward. Turner wanted to extend his shooting range to the three-point line. After seeking some advice he decided to begin with the shortest three-pointer on the court in the baseline corner. Smart move. Turner shot about 27 percent from distance for his career coming into the season, but is over 46 percent just past the quarter pole of this season. Again, the guy just wants to be great.

Evan Turner to fans: "Don't blame me, blame Doug Collins"

The Sixers, like many other basketball teams, have a promotion where fans in attendance for home games receive a free Big Mac if Philly scores over 100 points in a game.
The Sixers were up 99-80 on the Atlanta Hawks with about 24 seconds left in the game, and instead of trying to score a basket to put the team over the century mark, Collins instructed Evan Turner to dribble out the clock on their final possession. The sportsmanlike move ensured no hard feelings between the 76ers and Hawks, but it left the home fans upset.
The crowd was on its feet and howling for Turner to score the bucket to put Philly over the top. Turner knew what was at stake, and he even pointed at Collins to shift the blame to his coach as he dribbled out the clock.

Evan Turner Dialing 960
POSTED: Thursday, December 27, 2012

Evan Turner Wednesday became the first Sixers to have at least 9 assists and 6 rebounds in a game without scoring a field goal since at least 1985-86 (which is as far back as basketball-reference.com will let us search).

Over those 28 seasons, Villanova's Kyle Lowry has the most assists in a game (18) without a field goal, which he did last New Year's Eve.

Sixers' Evan Turner looking for ways to take shots
John N. Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
Posted: Monday, December 31, 2012

PORTLAND - Shortly after a substandard performance in the 76ers' 89-85 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night, forward Evan Turner was clearly bothered by his invisible performance.

Averaging just slightly more than 13 shots per game, Turner, guarded for most of the game by Portland's Nicolas Batum, had just gone 2 for 7 from the floor, including 0 for 2 from behind the three-point line, for just four points.

It marked the second time in three games that Turner had attempted single-digit shots. But unlike the last time it happened - Turner scored a season-low one point, was 0 for 4 from the field but handed out nine assists in the Sixers' Dec. 26 win at Memphis - there was no win to show for it.

He made it clear that there was nothing that Portland had done defensively that caused him to struggle. In fact, Turner said who he faces has nothing to do with how he plays at the offensive end.

"I don't worry about defenders, I can get my shot off anytime I want, and I can score on anybody," Turner said. "I have to find opportunities to get going, and that's it. It doesn't matter about defenders. I'm too old to be worried about defenders."

The Sixers (14-17) did not practice on Sunday. They will resume their playing schedule on New Year's Day against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I'm trying to figure it out, to tell you the truth," Turner said of not being involved in the offense lately. "I may have to run in transition a little more. One thing I have to do is get back to rebounding and trying to push it from there. The key thing right now is to try and let the game come to me. I have to try to figure it out."

Averaging 14.3 points per game this season, Turner has taken just 21 shots (7 for 21) in the team's last three games. This season, Turner has had single-digit shot attempts just nine times, and six came in the first eight games, when the Sixers were in the process of getting acclimated to all of their new players.

Sixers point guard Jrue Holiday scored 29 points while making 13 of 23 shots against Portland. Holiday said he has to do a better job of getting Turner involved. This, Holiday said, might require him being less selfish.

"Honestly, I think I take some responsibility for that," said Holiday, who has attempted 42 shots in the last two games. "I think I have taken Evan's shots the last game and this game."

Vito: Sixers' Evan Turner says money not on his mind
Published: Sunday, January 06, 2013
By CHRISTOPHER A. VITO
[email protected]

Trying to back down Kevin Durant the other night, Evan Turner cut across the lane and heaved an ugly shot. It clanged off the rim. Out of his element ? against Oklahoma City?s all-star defender ? Turner was out of options, so he took the best one available to him.

When it comes to his contract, Turner similarly is running out of options.

The 76ers picked up Turner?s fourth-year option prior to the season opener, so he?ll be around next season. And they still could sign him to an $8.7 million qualifying offer for the 2014-15 season ? or they could let him walk after next season, should they deem that offer sheet too steep.

?I don?t worry about money because I?m going to get money regardless. Never has crossed my mind once,? Turner said recently. ?I?d rather be a great player in this league and keep getting better. I?m not worried about money. Money?s going to come. I?d rather play than get rich. That?s just a perk of it. If I keep learning, keep growing, I?ll find a way, but I don?t worry about money.?

Potential realized, maturation embraced, Turner has spent chunks of this season looking like the kid drafted second overall in 2010 ? including the third-year forward?s career-best stretch of 17 straight games in which he had scored double figures.

He?s also gone through ruts, like this recent road trip. Against Memphis, Turner managed one point and six turnovers in 40 minutes. In Portland, he had four points on 2-for-7 shooting. And at OKC, he paired five points with six turnovers in 30 minutes.

Because Durant was guarding him? Not exactly.

?I don?t worry about anyone guarding me because I can do what I want when I want,? Turner said. ?It?s just me getting acclimated and getting a rhythm.?

Inside the Sixers: Sixers should consider trading Evan Turner for a big man
John Mitchell

20130112_inq_sixrtalk12z-x.JPG

Following a 26-point, nine-rebound game in a 103-71 victory over Boston on March 7 last season, 76ers coach Doug Collins was clear about who Evan Turner is.

"Evan needs the ball," Collins said. "He's a totally different player when he has the ball in his hands."

Turner agrees. Given the choice, Turner would always prefer to have the ball in his hands. But this possibility dissipated, probably forever in Philadelphia, when the Sixers awarded Jrue Holiday a four-year, $41 million contact.

As things have gone from mediocre to awful this season, the 15-22 Sixers have to at least consider moving someone, and Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in 2010, is probably their most attractive piece at the moment.

The Sixers have lost 16 of their last 21 games. They have dropped their last four by an average of more than 21 points. In those four games their defense has been like a sieve, allowing 57 points on average in the second half.

This could be considered a slump if the Sixers had the wherewithal to turn things around. But with the current roster, they don't.

Collins is not a good coach.

Agreed. Their front office should be fired, too, for being suckered into trading for Bynum with 1 year left on his contract. He'll probably never play a game for them.

And now they want to trade ET for a big man?
