G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

The enigma that is Evan Turner
April 7, 2013

A week from Wednesday, the Sixers will close out the 2012-13 season. They will do so with a losing record. What happens from the first moment of the offseason will be interesting, intriguing and critical to the team?s success in the near future.

Will Doug Collins return for the fourth and final year on his contract? Does the franchise already know if it wants to go after Andrew Bynum in free agency? Or will it swallow the massive loss he was and pursue lesser-name players who are available on the market? (See story.)

And will they trade or keep Evan Turner? The second overall pick in the 2010 draft can have 24-point, 11-rebound performances, as he did Friday in Atlanta, just as readily as he can have six-point, six-rebound and zero-assist nights, like he did two weeks ago against Utah.

Turner will be the first to admit his time as a pro has come with its ups and downs.

?It has been a bumpy ride, but it has gotten smoother as I go along and get more acclimated,? he said.

When asked if he has learned what it takes to make a good professional basketball player, Turner was quick to answer.

?In general, coming early and staying late. Being a guy your teammates can depend on and just coming out to play every night,? he said. ?And doing what is best for the team.?

Evan Turner believes he'll be back with 76ers
Keith Pompey, Inquirer Staff Writer
Posted: Friday, April 19, 2013

Say this for Evan Turner, he's self-assured.

So far, the 76er hasn't had the impact expected as the second overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. Despite that, Turner said that he'll be a Sixer next season even though his name has come up before in trade rumors.

"Not to be arrogant or cocky, but my name comes up, I believe, because of trade value in that situation," Turner said. "Regardless of whether I get heat for certain situations or certain bad nights and stuff, I still think I'm a valuable player in this league."

Of the top five picks in the 2010 draft, Turner's career average of 10.1 points ranks third behind Washington's John Wall (16.9), the first overall pick, and Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins (16.3), who went fifth.

Utah's Derrick Favors (44 starts) is the only top pick in that class with fewer career starts than Turner's 116.

Turner, who plays forward, averaged a career-best 13.3 points this season and was the only Sixer to start all 82 games.

"I'm just tapping the surface," said Turner, who averaged 7.2 points as a rookie and 9.4 last season. "The difference between 14 points and 18 points are a couple of foul calls. So people might agree that I get fouled a lot. So if I get to 18 points, that's all-star numbers."

But for every solid performance, the 6-foot-7, 220-pounder has had two or three horrible nights. His low-point came in a 97-86 victory against Washington on April 12. Turner was held scoreless on 0-for-11 shooting. That marked the second time this season when he failed to make a field goal. He scored a point during a 0-for-4 shooting performance in a 99-89 victory over Memphis on Dec. 26.

Turner's biggest problem has been an inability to string together consecutive productive performances while playing on back-to-back nights. That's something the Chicago native said he was told he must improve upon during Thursday's season-ending meeting with former coach Doug Collins, general manager Tony DiLeo, and majority own Josh Harris.

Sixers player evaluation: Evan Turner
April 30, 2013

Evan Turner

Position: Guard

Status: Signed through the 2013-14 season for $6.67 million. Restricted free agent in 2014.

Signature game of 2012-13
Turner?s best statistical game of the season was probably the New Year?s Day victory over the Lakers in Los Angeles. Turner had 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting. He made two of his three attempts from long range, and he added five assists and a season-high 13 rebounds. While he had other games with more points, the Lakers' outing was his most complete performance.

Turner in 2012-13
That might have been his best game, but his true signature game -- the game that most defined Turner -- came on Jan. 30 against the Washington Wizards at home. Here?s our summary from that evening:

Turner -- who scored six points on 27.2 percent shooting from the field -- looked lost for much of the evening. During one painful offensive possession in the first half, he dribbled for almost 24 seconds, got blocked, and then got called for a shot clock violation. You know those basketball training videos they show to kids? That sequence was the opposite.

That was Turner this season -- maddeningly inconsistent (see story). He often tried to do too much, frequently at the team?s expense.

Turner averaged 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists -- all of which were career highs. But he also played nine minutes more per game than he ever had before (accounting for the uptick in his numbers), while his 41.9 field goal percentage was the worst of his three-year career. And his player efficiency rating was only 90th in the NBA.

Former 76ers GM Tony DiLeo reportedly "wanted to keep" Evan Turner, who is under contract next season and has an $8.7 million team option for 2014-15.
New GM Sam Hinkie is thought to revere advanced statistical measures, however, which are none too kind to Turner (including a paltry .035 'win shares per 48 minutes' this season). Turner clashed with coach Doug Collins, so Collins' departure could be good for the former No 2. overall pick, but don't be surprised to hear Turner's name in trade rumors in the coming months. The Sixers tried to trade away Evan Turner during Thursday's draft, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Tyler Tynes.
All the Sixers wanted in exchange for Turner was a late first-round pick. The fact that they could find no takers speaks volumes. In three seasons since going No. 2 overall in the draft, Turner has failed to improve his brutal jump shot, clashed with former coach Doug Collins and earned a bust label. New GM Sam Hinkie would probably accept a ham sandwich for the Ohio State product. Jun 28

Video: Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala?s Limo Broke Down On Way to Jrue Holiday?s Wedding
Enrico Campitelli Jr.
Jul 8, 2013

Jrue Holiday and his longtime girlfriend and very talented soccer player Lauren Cheney finally tied the knot over the weekend and many of his former Sixers teammates were in attendance for the couple?s special day.

But getting there wasn?t easy.

Thanks to the on-the-scene reporting of Sixers guard Evan Turner, we learned that a limousine carrying Turner and his former partner-in-crime Andre Iguodala caught fire on the way to the wedding.

Well, it didn?t catch fire exacty, it may have just ?caught smoke,? as Turner narrates in the below videos.

Turner and Iguodala make a regular Charles and Kenny duo. Iggy even makes fun of the Kid ET for his poor dieting habits.

It'll be interesting to see if he has the ball in his hands any more this season considering they'll be starting a rookie PG, and if so if that improves his shooting percentage.

At this point, it almost seems like he's best suited for a 28ish mpg role coming off the bench where he's the primary ball handler on the 2nd unit (play him with a spot up shooting PG).

What should Sixers do with Evan Turner?
July 30, 2013

Evan Turner was the Sixers' best three-point shooter last year (36.5 percent), but will he be on the roster next season? (USA Today Images)

Draft night was interesting -- because of what happened and what didn?t, because of who went and who stayed.

There was a sense that Sixers president and general manager Sam Hinkie would tinker with the roster that evening. But if people expected a shoe to drop, they couldn?t have anticipated it would be Jrue Holiday?s neon variety.

It was a bold and surprising development. After Holiday and a second-round pick were bundled off to New Orleans for Nerlens Noel and a top-five protected first-rounder in next year?s draft, it became apparent that Hinkie would completely remake the team and that no one, not even a 23-year-old All-Star, was untouchable.

For a while, it felt inevitable that Evan Turner would be the next to go. If Holiday commanded two first-rounders in return, the right price for Turner would surely be much lower (a new T-shirt cannon, perhaps) -- making it easier, in theory, to offload the former No. 2 overall pick on someone else. And yet Turner remains. So what, exactly, do the Sixers think of him?

?With change comes opportunity,? Hinkie told CSNPhilly.com this week. (Despite what some people might believe, Hinkie hasn?t gone to ground.) ?Our team and our roster is very different than last year with a different composition of players, likely a different system, definitely different players on the floor. This could well be an opportunity where Evan thrives. I hope our standards will be a place where hard work and competitiveness are rewarded and valued. Evan has those in spades.?

Which '10 draftees worth extending?

Extend or wait and see: Evan Turner.

Ham: Wait and see. With the team in major rebuild mode, expect Turner to put up better numbers in Year 4. Do you lock him up to a reasonable rate before he puts up inflated numbers? Or do you wait him out and let the market decide his value next summer? I would make him prove his worth one more time or move him at the deadline when he's having a career year.

Katz: Wait and see. Turner is a player without an elite skill in a league of specialists. He does a bunch of things well, but is a pedestrian Swiss Army Knife worth $7 million or $8 million a year? That is the type of contact that can rip salary cap flexibility away from a rebuilding 76ers team.

Sunnergren: Wait and see. Turner is an able passer, a formerly elite rebounder, and seems close to developing a reliable corner 3. He's also an offensive black hole who will be 25 in October, is arguably regressing, and has yet to put together anything that even resembles an average season. With Doug Collins -- and his defiantly inefficient offense -- gone, there's hope for a turnaround. We'll have to see it first.

Tynan: Wait and see. The Fighting Sam Hinkies have made clear their franchise plans, and the former No. 2 pick hasn't made a good case for an early extension with his performance. Philly appears bad enough to challenge for next year's top pick ahead of Andrew Wiggins and a loaded draft class, so there shouldn't be a rush to secure the underwhelming Turner.

Wallace: Wait and see. Turner very well could end up playing in the league for a dozen or so years as a Calbert Chaney, Doug Christie or Dan Majerle-type contributor. But there's been no evidence as of yet that he's a franchise cornerstone or anchor. Philly isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so there's no need to rush into a long-term, expensive deal based on what they know of Turner so far.

Evan Turner could see more time at shooting guard and as a reserve point guard this season.
"We have lots of guys that can play several different positions," GM Sam Hinkie said. Thanks to injuries to Jason Richardson last season, Turner started 12 games at shooting guard, a position in which his numbers were mostly similar, except for making a higher percentage of 3-pointers. The 24-year-old swingman also posted a career-high 4.3 assists per game last season, and with no backup point guard behind Michael Carter-Williams, seeing time there makes sense. Regardless, this does not do much to help his value and still has a lot to do to get in to the good graces of fantasy owners. Aug 1

Turner no fan of 'tank mode'
Sun Aug 18, 2013.
By Tom Moore Staff writer
Posted on August 18, 2013

NEW HOPE, Pa. ? Evan Turner knows expectations are low for the 2013-14 76ers.

Turner understands that ESPN.com picked the Sixers to finish with a 20-62 record and last in the Eastern Conference. He?s heard the talk about losing being best for the franchise?s future because they could get a top draft pick next June.

During an interview at his Evan Turner Basketball ProCamp on Saturday at New Hope-Solebury High School, Turner said he doesn?t subscribe to that point of view. And, based on his Friday night telephone conversation with new coach Brett Brown, Brown doesn?t, either.

?I told him, ?Everybody wants to be in tank mode and thinks we?re going to lose. I intend on trying to win as much as possible because losing?s too easy,? ? Turner said. ?He said, ?Well, they got the wrong coach if we?re going to go out and lose on purpose. We want to compete and get better.? ?

Given the roster overhaul, which included trading all-star guard Jrue Holiday and adding first-round picks Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams, and the resignation of coach Doug Collins, Turner believes this represents a new start for not just him but everybody on the roster.

With so many changes and new GM Sam Hinkie overseeing the rebuilding process, Turner, who is heading into the fourth and final guaranteed year of his rookie contract, realizes there are no guarantees he?ll remain a Sixer even until the end of the season.

?All I can worry about is being better,? Turner said. ?I just don?t want to let these type of situations deter the fun I have with the game. Everything that?s been going on this summer has been about chess moves and money and all that. At the end of the day, it?s about playing basketball.?

Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft, isn?t on-board with the perception that he should be more effective just because the coach is somebody other than Collins.

?I think each year I?ve been taking jumps,? he said. ?I don?t want to sit here and say if I?m successful it?s because of Doug (leaving). I want to think it?s maturing and growing.?

Still, Turner, who averaged career-highs in scoring (13.3 points) and rebounds (6.3) while shooting a career-low 41.9 percent last season, said he?s looking forward to playing in Brown?s uptempo offense and being one of the team?s young leaders.

?(Brown) said he wants to get us in the best fitness shape of our life,? said Turner, who likes that Brown is accustomed to winning as a Spurs assistant. ?He feels like my skills will flourish in that situation.?
