G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Turner tweeted that his number was retired at his high school, St Joseph's in Westchester, IL, tonight. Congrats to him on that honor. I'm sure he will be honored by OSU but not until he gets that degree. Oden and Sullinger are both in line for being honored after they graduate as well I believe, based on being 1st team All-Americans, although it is unclear what OSU will do to honor players now that they have stopped retiring numbers.

Turner will have his number hung. There's no way in hell that Oden or Sullinger will have theirs hung.

They aren't retiring numbers anymore from what I have read, so I would imagine that the standard to be honored will be less stringent than winning NPOY. North Carolina "honors" jerseys of guys who were 1st team All-American & I believe they actually retire jerseys for NPOYs. I believe that the route OSU will be following now that they have changed their policy as far as honoring former players is to just have honored jersey numbers added to the rafters and no more retired jersey numbers. I like the idea that OSU is supposed to do something intermediate that is short of retiring a number but recognizing the accomplishments of a number of deserving players. Guys like Turner, Sullinger and Oden who were voted 1st team All-American should get their name honored in the rafters if OSU is going to follow similar practices of other major universities (but I believe numbers won't be retired for anyone at OSU anymore, and of course you'd run out of numbers pretty quickly if you didn't have awfully high standards for that).

If OSU adopts the same policy as North Carolina, they could hang a jersey for a guy getting 1st or 2nd team AA, conference POY, Olympic gold medal, or NCAA tourney championship MVP/MOP. Which means there could be a lot of players that OSU hangs jerseys for, but haven't yet honored. I'm not sure how much sense it makes to pick a specific point in time to start so it would make sense for them to hang jerseys of all graduates who meet those criteria. There are many former Buckeyes who are not currently honored at all that could be with those criteria - in addition to ET, Sully and GO, there are about several others that include Dials, Penn, Redd, Hopson, and Hosket, as well as at least five more guys who played prior to Hosket.

The policy is not changing. The people that would have had their numbers retired will now just be honored. No one who wouldn't have had their number retired is getting their jersey hung.

I don't understand that logic. You can honor more deserving players by just hanging a jersey instead of having to retire the number, I don't believe the honors will be as limited as you expect. http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/con.../osu-halts-retiring-numbers-of-its-stars.html
