Evan Turner Not Looking Over His Shoulder This Season
January 28, 2013
By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? The Sixers? homestand continues tonight as they welcome the Memphis Grizzlies to the Center.

This is the second of eight straight home games for Philadelphia. The first was on Saturday night, as the Sixers put together one of their best efforts of the season, rolling the Atlantic Division-leading Knicks, 97-80.

?We were able to win a first quarter and everything just snowballed positively on from there,? Sixers guard/forward Evan Turner tells KYW Newsradio. ?Jrue (Holiday) had a hot night, he got us going well.?

Holiday, headed to his first All-Star Game next month, was wonderful against the Knicks, finishing with a career high 35 points.

But Turner was also key in the win, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists. For the season, Turner is averaging 14.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists a game. He is shooting 44% from the field, and a very impressive 42% from behind the three-point arc. Coming into this season, Turner was a 27% three-point shooter. The Ohio State product talks about why that perimeter game is so improved.

?Consistency and rhythm,? Turner says. ?I?ve been able to play, work out kinks, work through stuff. I sat behind an All-Star and a gold medal winner (Andre Iguodala) my first two years and this year I?ve been able to get acclimated fully and not have to look over my shoulder.?

Evan Turner shot 12-of-18 from the field for 27 points with three rebounds, seven assists and one steal against the Grizzlies on Monday.
He's getting hot again with point totals of 20, 23 and 18 on Saturday, Tuesday and Monday, respectively. Turner's assists have also been up in his last five games with an average of 6.2 and he should be in all lineups. Jan. 28

High-school basketball: Special surprise on Senior Night
By Rob Oller

Former Ohio State basketball star Evan Turner stuns New Albany?s Devon Pitts as Pitts? mother, Carol, watches before a game against Watkins Memorial. Turner, now playing for the NBA?s 76ers, flew from Philadelphia to be with Pitts on Senior Night.

As New Albany?s four seniors lined up with their parents for Senior Night before last night?s home game against Watkins Memorial, Evan Turner sneaked up behind an unsuspecting Devon Pitts and flicked the senior center?s right ear.

Pitts, seeing the surprise visitor, covered his face with his hand to hide his emotions. Turner, the Philadelphia 76ers guard and former national player of the year at Ohio State, flew to Columbus from Philadelphia yesterday afternoon to surprise Pitts, whom he began mentoring in 2005 while still in high school.

?This is one of the greatest nights of my life,? Pitts said after the pregame ceremony, his eyes still puffy and wet.

One hour earlier, in the kitchen of Pitts? home, Turner predicted Pitts would maintain his composure.

?I?ve never seen him cry before,? Turner said. ?And I don?t think I?m worthy enough for tears.?& amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; lt; /p>

He thought wrong.

?Evan is like a brother to me,? said Pitts, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Eagles? 54-33 victory.

Turner, who is from Chicago, met Pitts through a mutual acquaintance ? an assistant coach on Turner?s high-school team ? and the friendship grew as both began to realize they shared similar interests and personalities.

Sixers' Evan Turner struggling with lineup changes
John N. Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
Posted: Saturday, February 9, 2013

When the 76ers made some changes to the lineup, the coaching staff knew there would be growing pains. Specifically, it knew that Evan Turner would have to make the biggest, short-term adjustments to his game to accommodate the insertion of Nick Young into Jason Richardson's shooting-guard role.

Richardson, who has missed the last eight games, is now lost for the season, succumbing to a torn cartilage in his left knee that will require surgery and up to 12 months of recovery. Young, who has averaged 15.8 points in place of Richardson (10.5 ppg. in 33 games), has fit in nicely starting alongside Jrue Holiday in the Sixers backcourt.

But Turner has struggled lately. Averaging a career-high 13.6 points in his first season as a full-time starter, Turner is scoring just 5.5 points per game since the lineup change. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft has not been shooting the ball as often as the team gets used to its new starters - Spencer Hawes is back in the starting lineup again. Considering how he has shot the ball lately, this is not a bad thing: Turner is just 9 for 36 from the field (25 percent) over the last four games.

Turner didn't seem overly concerned with his recent numbers, pointing out that the Sixers (21-27) are 3-1 in the last four games.

"I'm a rhythm player, and lately I haven't been getting my shots in rhythm," Turner said. "But the good thing is that we've won, so it's OK."

Turner is coming off perhaps his worst performance of the season, a 1-for-10 game that saw him score just two points. However, when he last faced Charlotte, Saturday's opponent, Turner had the type of game the Sixers envisioned when they selected him, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 104-98 road victory Nov. 30.

That performance capped a three-game stretch that saw Turner shoot 55 percent from the field and average 21.0 points and almost eight rebounds. The Sixers won all three of those games, and that stretch marked the last time the Sixers won consecutive games before their recent three-game streak.

Sixers coach Doug Collins believes that Turner can have similar performances like his last game against Charlotte if he stops being so hard on himself.

"Evan's just got to play; he's got to play," Collins said. "Evan gets too hard on himself. He's got to understand that there is not a perfect game, no perfect player."

Sixers Notes: Report: Sixers exploring trade of Evan Turner
John N. Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
Posted: Sunday, February 10, 2013

A report on ESPN.com early Saturday said that the 76ers were exploring potential trade options involving small forward Evan Turner.

Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo did not comment on the report.

Turner, however, discussed it.

"I'm not a GM, so I really don't know [my trade value]," Turner said. "I think it's all about what our team needs, and that's it. Whatever. I think that the best is yet to come with me in general, wherever it occurs."

Turner is making $5.3 million this season. In October, the Sixers picked up his $6.7 million option for next season. Turner did not say he'd be opposed to a trade.

"It's not my choice to be traded or not, you know?" Turner said. "So if it happens, it happens. . . . What I want doesn't matter. If it did, life would be way different."

Turner eyes all-star break
Posted: Monday, February 11, 2013

PHILADELPHIA ? Evan Turner can?t wait for the all-star break.

Only two games ? a home meeting with the Clippers on Monday night and a road date with the Bucks on Wednesday ? separate Turner and the Sixers from a five-day respite.

?I sure am (looking forward to it),? said Turner after Sunday?s short practice. ?I?m going to the Bahamas. I have my bathing suit ready. I?m excited.?

Turner is the only Sixer to start all 49 games this season. He?s third on the team in scoring (13.7), and second in rebounds (6.7), assists (4.5) and minutes (36.2).

?(Playing so many games) tests your mind,? Turner said. ?In the up-and-down moments as a unit in a main city like Philadelphia, it can get trying at times. You just need a break to rest your body and stuff.?

Turner, like many of the 22-27 Sixers, has been inconsistent. He scored 12-plus points in 17 consecutive games from Nov. 16-Dec. 18, but also had five-single digit outings in an 11-game stretch.

Turner contends it?s all about the opportunities. When taking at least 12 shots in games this season, Turner is shooting 46.6 percent and averaging 17.7 points, while the numbers drop to 32 percent and 6.2 points when he shoots 11 or fewer times. But the Sixers are only 14-18 when he gets 12 shots, compared to 8-9 when he attempts 11 or fewer.

?You need shots,? said Turner, a fourth-year pro. ?That?s not hating at anybody or anything like that. Obviously, I?m gauged on if I make shots, you know? Like my man Herb Magee says, ?You can?t make shots without taking them.? I go and get seven shots some nights and I go the whole second half without shots and we win, to me, that?s a successful night.?

Source: No deal in works for Sixers' Evan Turner
Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 2013

THE 76ERS are no doubt listening to any and all calls as Thursday's trading deadline approaches, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the health status of center Andrew Bynum.

General manager Tony DiLeo has said numerous times that he is not willing to mortgage the future of the organization to get a player who will have only a short stay here.

The problem is that besides Jrue Holiday and Thaddeus Young, both signed to long-term contracts, who else is in the future plans? A report by ESPN's Chris Broussard said that swingman Evan Turner, who is averaging career highs in points (13.8), rebounds (6.6), assists (4.4) and minutes (36.2), is on the trading block, though an NBA source told the Daily News nothing is going on with Turner.

Turner is in his third year after being taken with the second overall pick in June 2010.

With 31 games remaining and Bynum saying Tuesday he is still weeks away from a debut with his new team, the decisions that will be made by the Sixers' front office will certainly be interesting.

Evan Turner scored 12 points in Thursday's 93-82 loss to the Bulls to go with eight boards, four assists and two steals on 6-of-16 shooting.
February did not treat Turner well and he shot an ugly 36 percent from the field to go with 12 points and seven boards. Even though he played 35 minutes per game in the month

Evan Turner shines as 76ers snap season-long skid

PHILADELPHIA ? Finally, mercifully, the losing streak is over.

Evan Turner just missed recording his first career triple double as the 76ers rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors 104-97 on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The victory, Philadelphia's first since upending Charlotte on Feb. 9, snapped a season-long seven-game skid.

"I know Evan has it in him," Sixers guard Jrue Holiday said. "I know what Evan can do. I know everybody here knows what Evan can do. When he plays like that, that's the ET, that's the No. 2 pick."

Turner scored 22 points on 10-for-15 shooting while adding 10 rebounds and nine assists.
He grabbed an offensive board, dished to Thad Young for a lay-in and a 96-94 advantage with three minutes to play, and the Sixers closed the game on a 10-3 run after trading the lead six times in the fourth quarter.

Turner decision could be interesting
Posted: Sunday, March 24, 2013
By Tom Moore Staff writer

The 76ers have to make two major decisions this summer.

The first is what to do with Andrew Bynum. The injured center, who underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery Tuesday, will end up earning $16.5 million despite not playing a game for the Sixers this season.

Unless he gets a clean bill of health before the July 1 start of free agency and the Sixers can keep him on a short-term, relatively low contract (unlikely on both counts), it?s hard to imagine Bynum staying.

The other is how ? if? ? Evan Turner fits in the team?s longterm plans. The Sixers have already picked up the fourth-year option (for next season) on Turner for $6.7 million. But they have to figure out if they want to give Turner an $8.7 million qualifying offer to retain the right to match another team?s offer for him in 2014-15.

The Sixers worked out a four-year, $44 million extension for Jrue Holiday right at the Oct. 31 deadline, locking up the fourth-year pro for the next four years.

But Turner doesn?t merit that much money and probably wouldn?t be interested in a more reasonable four-year, $30 million extension (if the Sixers are willing to pay that much).

Turner is an NBA starter who rebounds well and has pretty good all-around skills. He gets points for being the only Sixer to appear (and start) all 68 games this season.

Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, is best suited to having the ball in his hands as a point guard, but his lack of speed and quickness sometimes make defending opposing point guards difficult.

The numbers also seem to indicate he?s not in terrific physical shape.

In the Sixers? 17 second games of back-to-backs, Turner is shooting 35 percent (77-for-220) from the field. In the other 51 games, he?s shooting 44.1 percent (293-for-664).

Most players would drop off slightly, but not to that degree.

Sixers hope to untrack Evan Turner
Keith Pompey, Inquirer Staff Writer
Posted: Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Not only are the 76ers trying to get some wins, they hope to get one of their key players back on track.

Evan Turner, the team's third-leading scorer at 13.3 points per game, has scored a total of 39 points over the last five games. His low point was a two-point effort against Portland on March 18.

"He's struggling right now," coach Doug Collins said after Turner scored six points in Monday night's 107-91 setback at Utah. "So hopefully we can get him these last 12 games playing that ball that he was playing before."

This week's games against Milwaukee on Wednesday, at Cleveland on Friday and against Charlotte on Saturday could be a good start.

The Sixers (27-43) are coming off a disappointing four-game road trip against the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver, Sacramento and Utah. Their lone victory was Sunday's 117-103 decision over the Kings.

Evan, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, now gets to face three teams he averaged 17.5 points against in a combined seven games this season.

The Sixers last played the Bucks (34-35) on Feb. 13. That was one of three games in which Turner scored 20 or more points since Jan. 28. He scored 20 points on 8-of-19 shooting in the 94-92 setback in Milwaukee.

Turner: 'If (Sixers) don?t want me, somebody will'
Posted: Wednesday, April 3, 2013
By Tom Moore Staff writer

The question seemed innocuous enough.

After Saturday night?s 100-92 home victory over the Bobcats, which gave the 76ers three wins in a row with nine to play, a reporter asked Evan Turner if Turner thinks the Sixers are trying to build something for next year.

?We just worry about one day at a time,? said Turner, a third-year pro. ?Whoever?s here next year is here, you know? There could be a lot of changes next year, as you know.?

Turner went on to say, ?I personally don?t care (if there are changes), you know what I?m saying? Whatever happens, happens. Everybody has to do what?s best for them and also best for the organization. You work with what you?ve got and just come out and prepare every day to succeed.?

Turner said wondering if this will be the second straight offseason with plenty of personnel moves ?doesn?t bother me.?

?If they don?t want me, somebody will, you know?? he said.

The Sixers have 10 new players on their 15-man roster this season from the 2011-12 group, thanks in part to the disastrous Andrew Bynum trade, after bringing back nearly the entire team the previous year.

If the Sixers overhaul the roster again, which they could do with seven expiring contracts, Turner might be the subject of trade talks after he was rumored to be available prior to the Feb. 21 trade deadline.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, Turner is averaging 22.5 points and 10 rebounds over the past two games. But he has had an up-and-down first season as a full-time starter, averaging 13.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists and shooting 42.4 percent from the field.

However, Turner could be attractive to other teams because only one more year of his contract (at $6.7 million) is guaranteed and his perceived potential.
