General Recruiting Discussion and Tangents (Merged)

How about getting hit up for comments by some recruiting reporter while you're trying to do your homework? Or getting text messages from various assistant coaches?

There's a lot of pressure on these kids, from adults who should know better to their peers and even the other kids in their recruiting class.

Its simple, ignore them. They dont have to respond to the text messages, emails etc. While there is alot of pressure, ultimately it is the recruits decision. They don't have to commit until they are ready, point blank. I am glad Trey is all Buckeye, but if he wanted to take visits I am sure that the coaches would have understood and waited for him to be ready to make the decision that is best for him.

you must not have been 18 years old at some point in your life....Being some internet forum guy saying ignoring people is simple is very easy is hilarious, not to mention it's much much harder for some kid who literally has the world at his fingertips....

So basically your suggestion is to stop using their phone, because that is the only way to 'ignore them'
They dont have to respond to the text messages, emails etc.
Responding is how they choose to handle the interruption. It is not what creates the constant interruptions.

There are a lot of recruiting reporters who keep calling/texting until you relent and give them an answer. Meanwhile they're doing the same to your dad, coach, uncle's grandmother, sister's BFF, etc.

Better get used to how kids are gonna get recruited right up until signing day.
This is how things are going for now on. The NCAA even bailed on trying to control it. Or until something really ugly happens to one of the big schools and they raise a stink. :tongue2:

Why do people feel like they are required to speak to reporters or do interviews? These websites do interviews with kids who don't even have access top read what's being written. We didn't have facebook or twitter, with its constant access 9-10 years ago, but it's a lot easier than people believe to keep normalcy while going through the process.

How is this the kid's fault? Unless you are/were a top-flight recruit yourself you have no clue what some of these kids have to put up with. If a recruit repeatly declines interviews (because he wants some privacy) then he gets a unwarranted bad rep as being stuck up or self-important.

Post your cell number on Buckeye Planet for all of us to see. We will all randomly text and call you when we want. Shouldn't be a problem for you to just ignore us all.

First, this discussion should be moved from this thread.

Second, the media does not require verbal commitments, the coaches do. They need verbal commitments in order to determine who to offer. Certainly it changes sometimes, yet coaches need those verbals in order to get a better ideo of who is going to sign. With that, those verbal commits will leak if the commit decides to talk to the media or not. So no, this is not all media driven. Verbal committing is part of the process for most kids since the majority need to secure a spot in the class before signing day (only the elite can hold off while major universities fill their classes up). It's the same deal with verbal offers. None of the offers are binding either. Verbal offers and commits is just how it is done. The only way to eliminate that is to only allow contact between coaches and recruits during the time official offers and commitments can be made. Without that, verbal offers and commitments will be a part of the process, media or not.

Do you want my personal phone number or the number to the prepaid phone we purchased that was only on during certain hours of the day? The majority of these people believe that interviews with recruiting sites are part of the recruiting process. Wrong.

Also, I never said it was a kid's fault. But there are ways to protect your privacy. I've been through the process, helped and am currently helping kids with recruiting. Coaches are normally respectful, it's the media and recruiting websites that are the hard people to deal with. And that part of recruiting is not entirely necessary, other than to make money.

Great article about Aquinas. Buddy (Iowa grad), lived in area and went to Aquinas games with regularity. He said that the Aquinas football team played as well as or better than many college teams. Obviously the coach and staff (Chris Carter level) have made a huge impression on the kids, and their numbers of D-I scholarships prove it. More impressive to me are the Ivy schollies (which are for academics, not athletic). Mining the HS kids from that school is for Florida (and other colleges) colleges like OSU and Glenville HS. It's great that Urb has an 'in' there, but methinks that the HS coach may have pictures/letters from lots of colleges that he hangs when one of them comes in. A little sarcasm on a Wednesday. I know that I would.

Go bucks
