HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

STRUGGLING TO LIVE UP TO THE HYPE DUE TO INJURY, CAN DONTRE WILSON FINALLY BE AN IMPACT PLAYER?

66306_h.jpg,qitok=EZa1wBqJ.pagespeed.ce.LZRFgMaHdn.jpg

After consecutive years of declining production largely impacted by a broken foot requiring multiple surgeries, one of the most intriguing offseason questions is whether or not the stars will finally align for senior-to-be Dontre Wilson.

If the specter of draining eligibility isn't enough to make Wilson hungry, the reality of Ezekiel Elliott, Braxton Miller, Mike Thomas and Jalin Thomas leaving behind an astonishing 474 touches up for grabs should be enough to make him salivate.

Similar to Curtis Samuel, the junior all-purpose back we profiled last week, questions abound as to how Wilson will fit into next year's offense and by extension, what level of impact he can have on the offense.

Exactly how Samuel and Wilson are ultimately deployed will likely have a cause/effect relationship to each other considering the similarity in skill-set and physical makeup.

Running track this season. I'm guessing he'd have not been cleared if there were any lingering issues with the foot?

THREE FOOTBALL BUCKEYES ADDED TO TRACK & FIELD ROSTER
Wilson, Clark and Landers set to join the track and field team
Jan. 19, 2016

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Dontre Wilson, sophomore James Clark and freshman Robert Landers – members of the Ohio State football team – have been added to the Ohio State track and field roster for the 2016 season, Karen Dennis, director of track & field/cross country, announced Tuesday.

“We're excited to have our football players join the track and field program,” Dennis said. “I appreciate Coach Meyer and his staff working Landers, Wilson and Clark into our training schedule in an effort to strengthen our men's program. We realize the indoor season is short and these men have a major responsibility to football. However, they are all talented athletes that may help us in the throwing and sprint events. They have some work to do to get their ‘track legs’ back, but work is something they are very familiar with.”

Wilson, an H-Back from DeSoto, Texas, is widely regarded as one of the fastest Buckeyes on the football field. He played in nine games as a junior this past season, battling foot injuries for much of the year. Entering 2015-16, Wilson a two-year letter winner, owned 43 career receptions for 510 yards and five scores. His career rushing average of 7.1 yards per carry includes 350 yards off 49 carries and one touchdown. Wilson participated in track and field as a freshman, sophomore and junior at DeSoto High School.

All Ohio State’s Dontre Wilson wants to do is go fast

usa-today-8812068.0.jpg

After three injury-riddled years in Columbus, it may finally be time to see Dontre Wilson fly.

Certain football players just seem to have an innate ability to make plays with the ball in their hands. Guys like Ted Ginn Jr. have the ability to take a five-yard curl and proceed to run about 100 yards back and forth across the field as part of a massive gain, and that ability is not something that is coached. Some players just know where the open space is on the field is, and when these players combine this natural play-making ability with pure speed, the result can look a little something like Ohio State senior H-back Dontre Wilson.

Wilson is far from a stranger to Ohio State fans. In fact, he’s essentially the last remaining key contributor from the 2013 team that lost to Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Injuries in 2014 and 2015, plus loaded receiver groups in both years have led to Wilson failing to replicate his freshman year impact as an all-around playmaker, but there is reason to believe that things could be different in 2016.

The problem with Wilson has never been talent. Rather, it’s been production and remaining on the field. For a player with Wilson’s 4.4 speed, there is absolutely no reason why Wilson has just one career play of at least 40 yards. There have been roughly 50 other instances where it appears that Wilson is just about to run away from everybody, but a lagging teammate or last-gasp arm tackle has always been Wilson’s kryptonite.

Wilson has always had the skill and mindset to excel in the Ohio State offense, but as Urban Meyer has stated, “(Dontre’s) never been a full-time player because he's never been big and strong enough.” Wilson now reportedly weighs 195 lbs (up from 180 lbs), and showcased the type of effort and blocking ability in 2015 that will be critical in earning Wilson a full time spot in the Buckeyes’ offense. Wilson will have to earn his touches just like every other talented Ohio State receiver, but if he can stay healthy, look out, because put simply: Dontre Wilson can do things on the football field that others can not.

Wilson the athlete
For Ohio State receivers Noah Brown and Torrance Gibson, most fans and analysts are relying on practice tales and high school film to form their opinions. With young and talented players sometimes this small amount of information is simply all that’s available, and this can sometimes lead to seemingly can’t-miss prospects proving to be massive misses.

DONTRE WILSON THANKFUL FOR FINALLY BEING HEALTHY ENOUGH TO PERFORM FOR OHIO STATE, KNOWS HE STILL HAS MORE TO PROVE

When Dontre Wilson leaves Ohio Stadium, he goes home and prays with his family. A self-proclaimed faithful person, the Ohio State senior said he always wants to thank the man upstairs for being physically able to play again.

After seeing his first truly extensive action in nearly two years against Bowling Green on Saturday in which he recorded 101 all-purpose yards and caught two touchdown passes, those prayers meant a little more.

"Once I got back home, we got together and prayed, just thanked God for letting me get back out there and play and play the way I play," Wilson said Wednesday after practice. "Just being thankful."

When Wilson turned on the tape and watched his three receptions for 37 yards, five carries for 36 yards, a 17-yard kickoff return and a pair of punt returns that totaled 11 yards, he saw the player he knows he can be. He also saw the player Ohio State fans expected him to be when he flipped his commitment from Oregon to the Buckeyes as part of the 2013 class, the speedy versatile talent many compared to Percy Harvin.

"Not just that game, but the whole season I feel like I have something to prove. I'm always going into every game with a chip on my shoulder," Wilson said. "I feel like left a lot out on the field these past couple of years so all these games are opportunities to make that up."

Urban Meyer is the reason Wilson elected to come to Ohio State all the way from DeSoto, Texas, especially after Chip Kelly left Oregon to coach the Philadelphia Eagles. He knew the history Meyer has of sending players to the NFL and felt like it would be foolish if he didn't try to do the same.

Now with a 2-year-old son, D'Neko, back home and his family watching intently after a broken foot marred the last 15+ months, Wilson finally feels like he is performing at H-back alongside Curtis Samuel the way Meyer wanted him to three years ago. Wilson weighs 198 pounds, much more than the 180 mark he entered the program upon his arrival in Columbus.

"If you go back and look at what Percy Harvin was for Coach Meyer, that's what me and Curtis did Saturday," Wilson said. "That's what he's been looking for so we're going to try and give him that the entire year."
