Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin commts a third minor violation - ESPN

A little more than a week after wrongly accusing Florida's Urban Meyer of cheating, first-year Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has had his own hand slapped ... again.

Tennessee plans to self-report a secondary violation, the third one involving Kiffin in the last month, after he mentioned unsigned prospect Bryce Brown by name during a radio show in Knoxville on Friday morning.

Brown is scheduled to make an official visit to Tennessee this weekend and is rated by Scouts Inc. as the No. 2 running back prospect in the country.

Kiffin was talking about the growing trend of high school prospects waiting until after signing day to choose a school and made a reference to "great players like Bryce Brown" while appearing on WNML Radio. Those comments came after the host of the show, Dave Hooker, couched the question by reminding Kiffin that he couldn't talk about specific recruits.

Is Kiffin sure that he passed the NCAA recruiting test? How many slaps on the wrist does one get before anything negative occurs?

In a just world, the NCAA wuold quickly rule that the violation will prevent Bryce Brown from attending Tennessee. I said something similar when USC was apparently in violation by having Reggie Bush talk to Joe McKnight on the phone a couple years ago. And we know where he ended up.

Interesting article on Kiffin and Tenn. in the new Sports Illustrated magazine. Much of the same vain as this thread. It looks like the vols are either going to hit it big with Kiffin, or have a massive crash and burn train wreck.

How would you feel about "FSU is a fine school, and Bowden a legendary coach, but they are awaiting a disciplinary ruling that the FSU President has said is likely to restrict more scholarships. We are not facing that."

Is that an expression of low opinion in your opinion? Does it detract from the character or standing of something if worded that way and truthful?

If "yes", do you feel that it is proper to not let a coach discuss truthful substantive issues facing a recruit's choice of institutions - even if they evoke the possibility that your institution looks better by comparison?

I'd like to know your opinion but I think the bad end of the Bowden era won't be a good thing Jimbo when he takes over. Especially considering the offense still has the Jeff Bowden style struggles.

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton said Tennessee will continue to take a "pro-active stance" as it relates to any potential violations, whether they're secondary or otherwise.

"It's the sign of an effective compliance program," said Hamilton, who hired the 33-year-old Kiffin after firing 17-year veteran Phillip Fulmer following last season.

Uh, no, Mike; it's the sign of hiring a callow young man who to date is a lot more interested in calling other people names than he is in knowing how he himself can do the right thing. You might want to set aside some of that $10 million in coaches' salaries to expanding your compliance department - they'll be a busy bunch over the next few years.

LK may well land a high position, but it is a buyer beware situation not unlike RR and CW. How far are you willing to let the boat rock before jumping for shore?

I remembered this TolHiFi (said he worked with coaches all across the country) poster saying something about Lane Kiffin in the past. Turns out to be pretty accurate considering it was posted before Thanksgiving.
