LB Conner Crowell (official thread)

Gray Shirt?

If he would postpone enrollment til after this season, he would have time to recover, and maintain the flexibility of having 5 actual football years to play 4 seasons -- without the Med. hardship question. I don't think there is any rule preventing this action.

Depending on the surgery, his academics could be compromised. I would not have wanted to start my Freshman year on crutches and missing classes for doctor appointments.

If he comes in with Cardale, then OSU could present an additional scholarship to a deserving Senior walk-on.

That's a good thought. The start of classes are over 6 weeks away (Sept. 21), so he might not have to be on crutches on his way to classes for very long. If he decides to delay for a quarter, it would probably postpone his eventual graduation by a semester, since the switch from quarters occurs in mid-2012. That may not be something he wants to do on the chance of giving him a year of football in 2016, in case he takes a redshirt year after grayshirting without that redshirt year being eligible as a "medical redshirt".

But it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the grayshirt possibility offered to him; although I think it should be completely his choice, and he shouldn't feel any pressure from tOSU about taking it.

I believe that in recent years, the freshmen have enrolled for the summer quarter. I haven't seen anywhere whether Conner was there this summer or not, but if so, would that eliminate the grayshirt option?

It would, since the 5-year to play 4 clocks starts ticking as soon as a student/athlete enrolls as a full-time student (12 or more credit hours). Does anybody know if Connor was at tOSU for the summer quarter?

He may not have been full time...I don't recall if Boeckman was part-time in Columbus all of 2003 but he was there for Media Day in-uniform.

I'd think the bigger issue is that OSU is likely paying for Crowell's medical expenses which means he's already accepted grant-in-aid and started his clock.

My supervisor went to school with Conner's uncle Sherwood. Conner moved to Maryland from Oahu several years back. Definitely an island boy...second player born and mainly raised in Hawaii to play for Ohio State (Scott Terna, aka HawaiianBuckeye, was the first).
